Yet Another Dog Behaviour Question.
cannibalgoldfish replied to cannibalgoldfish's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh god. I hadn't even thought it would get that far. As it is I think 8 is old for an entire dog to start pushing his boundaries. (the younger dog is 8) All the problems seem to start late afternoon which seems to be when the older dog starts to stress. I hope it doesn't go that far So far it's just the younger one humbugging the elder and the elder making a whole heap of noise. -

A friend growing up had a chihuahua called killer... -
I posted a thread a while back about some issues my boys were having. It was suggested that because the older dog (10) is getting on in years the younger (8) might be pushing his place and challenging him. Since then it has become apparent that is happening. So my question is what do I do now? It is normal for a younger dog to challenge the more dominant dog when he senses the older one is weakening. Do I, let it happen because that's nature? Do I continue to support the older dog as top dog or the younger? Right now this involves the younger boy starting to mount the older one ( I stop him) and the older one wont sleep near the younger one without growling (He now sleeps in the laundry and seems to really enjoy the peace and solitude) Most of the older dogs issuse occur at night because he is losing his sight and it makes him insecure. The younger dog is fine during the day, it's only in the evening these problems occur.

Ridiculous/awesome Names

My old cats name was Ichabod. I dont know why but that name rocked. When I got him he had cat flu and a bad tummy so one end was gunky, the other worse. He became Icky the kitty. Ichabod when he was less grotty. I miss him. Pure bred burmilla who was the sweetest natured cat in the world, but dumb as a stump -
Sorry but I this thread annoyed me .For those saying " it wasn't a prize bull " or " Like I said they are just chooks and chooks to me arent pets they are Sunday roast as they are to most" It doesn't matter what animal was killed. Who knows, that " it's just a chook" might have been years of breeding to get to " just a chook" What if someones daughter/grandchild had been waiting on those eggs and watched them grow from chicks... the " just a chook" is wrong. I'm sorry, but there is no difference between a dog killing a chook or a cow. Or that " prize bull" someone mentioned. The dog doen't need to even get close to an animal but it can create enough stess and worry, panic, livestock running into fences, aborting babies... All is just as important as " just one chook" This is why we have bogans delibertately running over cats in my street because its " just a cat" No matter what the animal, it is never " just" an animal" I"m not getting into the issue here. For those on their egoboxes proudly stating " If you REALLY cared about your pets " they would tick this box then that... \ I love my dogs. I'm not a bogan loser owner. But my little old guy is getting old. He is starting to lose his sight. Now, he is chipped, registered, vaccinated, loved and everything known to man. But every now and then he has a freak out and tries to escape. I Know I have the yard covered. He cant get out. But all it takes is someone letting off fireworks, a car muffler, any loud bang and he freaks out. Ever seen a scared dog try to scale an impossible fence to escape? We are talking a dog that rubs himself raw and leaps fences much taller than he has ever jumped. This isn't a predictible behaviour. It happened and I was lucky was home.

I know nothing about dogs and breeding but I know old timers superstitions say a white horse is weak or soft. (and that a black horse will always be hard to work with) Do you think such colour issues have been passed down to dogs?

Dear dog walker, You know the day you took your dog for a walk at the local park? It was a lovely summer day and your dog must have loved his walk. Sure, you had him off leash in an on leash area but everyone else does it. Your dog doesn't do any harm? He is well behaved. Ok so the local park is a protected wildlife area hence the leash law but hey, your dog is fine. Sure he might chase a duck now and then but only in fun right? He cant catch them. Remember that pelican your dog chased this week? The one sitting on the bank. Notice anything about it before your dog chased it off back into the water? Probably not. That pelican had a broken bill and had been slowly starving to death. The wildlife carers had been trying to catch it for days and were on their way to get it after someone reported it was finally on land. But thats ok, your dog didn't hurt it, just chased it off back into the water. The next time the wildlife carers could get near to that pelican was when it washed up dying near my work. Pity they couldn't catch it earlier when it still had a bit of strength and maybe a chance? But no, your dog that was off leash in a on leash area chased it away. That pelican died but thats ok, your dog didn't kill it. He is a good dog, he just chases the birds for fun, he doesn't catch them....

I think that is what the name Shiba inu translates into in English. -

There is an evil poodle in the animated movie Open season 2, that's what that photo reminded me of :D

A staffy?

Slightly off topic but the paper labeled that dog in the photo a mastiff.

Actually, rabies is a real possible risk here. We have bats that fly across to PNG so if rabies spreads there it can be carried across.

Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
cannibalgoldfish replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
Unless they are my ex who dumped his dog on me because he had a new girlfriend and wanted to travel with her. "If you don't find him a home he goes to the pound" Si I spend a couple of weeks trying until the lady next door says she was going to report me for him howling (missing his dad) so my ex turns up and takes him to the pound where his large untrained fence jumping dog was put to sleep. Sometimes it isn't crap and they will do it -
Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet

Ehem, like my ex neighbours... They had a Rottie. They stuck it in the back yard and ignored it. One day I had a knock on the door from a guy from the council. The neighbours had called and reported they found a stray dog and shut it up in their back yard, can someone take it to the pound. They weren't home when he came around so he came over to ask me about it. I looked over the fence, "no, that's their dog" He left without taking her. A week later the dog was gone, a week after that they got a new puppy, a staffy cross. Because, "The old dog destroyed the yard" -
Not just the food, watch the wrapping! That stretchy elastic around some roasts and the string wrapped around others. I had a cat who was feeling very sorry for her self after eating that elastic netting of a rolled turkey roast last year. Even worse, I had chucked it in the bin and made sure it was buried but she still found it . Lucky the little beast threw it up in bits and felt better, nearly had a trip to the vet.
