Does Anyone Choose Not To Crate Train?
Karelea Aussies replied to BooBooBear's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not sure if it is 'going against' the grain to NOT crate train, but it is obviously something you are not comfortable with and I would guess that leads you to become very anxious when the pup is protesting. My Aussie did not take to the crate and behaved much as yours is now. I was willing to persist but my hubby was not so I gave in and she chose our bed for sleeping. We continued to feed her meals in her crate until she learnt some manners at feet time. After being desexed she became quite ill and unsettled and the only way we could keep her calm was to have her in her crate, and to be honest, that was where SHE wanted to be often seeking refuge in there. I thank dog that we had the crate otherwise who knows what injuries she may have caused herself. Ultimately you have to do what you are comfortable with, but crate training can hold many benefits both now and later in the pups life. Good luck with whatever you decide. :D -

Pixie, I have been confused before by this blue Merle Border above and thought it was an Aussie. See any difference to my blue merle Aussie below? -

Anyone Want To Post A Pic Of Their Crate?
Karelea Aussies replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
A divider and a puppy Mine just have some lightweight furry mats at the moment but when it cools down their soft beds will go back in. And sometimes we have the odd strays that wander in.... -
Thanks guys, I will pass all of this info on to the co-ordinator tomorrow . For now, I am off to bed to try to get some sleep. Thanks for the replies, I am very glad I posted the pics now.
-
Yep, you said the words I was hoping no one would say... I have a medium size doggy door
-
Yes thanks. I will talk to the co-ordinator about it tomorrow. I am going to talk to her about her back legs also, as something does'nt look right there either but could be coming from her feet.
-
that's a front foot, she's got a bumper on it. Thanks so it is, lack of sleep.....
-
We were talking about her lack of muscle today, we will get that rectified and hopefully, with a bit of luck, her feet may come right. She is origins unknown but obviously poor quality food and lack of excercise has made an impact already. I will pass this info to the rescue co-ordinator before our vet visit.

Only the one side...and its almost perfect.

Not much good but my grass is nice....... Only got a back foot.....
-
yeah I did take a photo of one of her feet cause I thought they looked a bit odd....but I dont think it came out very well....off to check

So you reckon no Kangaroo.....thank dog. I thought she might have some pointer and my youngest thought some JRT. Now if any Dane peoples come in, Ill have a big NO from you.....please.

This is Mia. We are trying to work out what she may have in her. Renbury had her listed simply as 'crossbreed'. She is approximately 12-15 weeks and is about 45cm high and 44cm long so fairly square in the body. She has really long gangly legs with very long toes. My girls think she looks like a kangaroo..... Any ideas would be appreciated. This is a 36" crate

Yep my last pack did not have stickers but as Tilly and Cleo had different products I just used the stickers out of Cleo's pack for both of them. I thought it was odd at the time, but just assumed my pack missed out.

Normal Behaviour After Desexing?
Karelea Aussies replied to Karelea Aussies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good point. She is still in the way too small doughnut bed and has been there since we came home from the Vet. I am going to try to get her out to water, feed and wee. The one good thing that has come from this is that I know she is fully toilet trained (we have a doggy door and she has always had free access to come and go as she pleases), that she has excellent bladder control, and that she can spend all night in her crate without going nuts. -

Normal Behaviour After Desexing?

thanks dyzney. She is currently curled up in a tiny doughnut bead on top of her tramp bed....strange girl I did ask why Rimadyl instead of a pain killer, and the Vet said that they generally prescribe it to help minimise swelling while providing pain relief, although she is not the prescribing Vet so is just her assumption based on their general practice. I am not sure what part of the drug is possibly a problem with MDR1 as I can not seem to find any information other than it is listed on the 'not for collie drug list'. The Clinic is looking into it to see if they can get any more info. As for Morphine, I think this is a bit of a grey area as it is thought to be pumped out by the P-glycoprotein (MDR1) in humans so is suspected to be the same for dogs, but there are no known reports of toxicity nor dose recommendations for dogs with the MDR1 mutation, according to the Washington State University web site. -

Will do. I do not have a wheat bag but have a couple of hot water bottles that the kids use in winter. They have fluffy covers that slip on. I will dig one out and check on its condition. If its ok I might try some hot tap water in it. Won't be hot but might offer some warmth. Thanks -
Normal Behaviour After Desexing?
Karelea Aussies replied to Karelea Aussies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just back from the vet and she has checked her out and is happy with what she is seeing. Temp is fine, stitches look good and while there, she was more animated than she has been, and to make me look like a nutter, she was walking propertly. Vet thinks she has a low pain threshold (we have no previous incidents to go by) and may also be having pain spams along with muscle tightening after resting. She had 1 jumpy episodes in the wating room and nothing since. We have decided to not give the painkillers at this stage but the Vet is going to make a few calls tomorrow to see if she can get more info in regards to Rimadyl and MDR1. (for Tilly and for future reference) Thanks for everyones thoughts on the matter. It helps to have people to bounce off every now and then. -
Normal Behaviour After Desexing?
Karelea Aussies replied to Karelea Aussies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I only have 2 previous to go on and they were back up and around easily too. She has made it out of her crate and 1 bedroom down and is laying on my daughters quilt. I had a quick look and stitches still look fine with no redness or swelling but she was definitely uncomfortable while I was doing it and very quickly sat up. The more I see the more I think she may have a stitch pulling. -
Normal Behaviour After Desexing?

The Vet that did the op is not at the clinic today but I have spoken to another Vet and she feels it is pain related. She is wary for Tilly to have any more Rimadyl until she has done some further investigation into the MDR1. She said other than that it could be, a bad stitch pulling or just a bit of extra sooking. I pointed out that she pretty much was back to normal on Friday evening and then back to being erratic yesterday afternoon. I just have to wait for her phone call now. persephone - I am worried about the Rimadyl as I have read 2 DOL posters associate it with MRD1, BUT I can not find any web sites that state that fact. I have only given her 1/2 tablet at this stage (on Thursday afternoon) as it was later in the evening that she started acting strange. If anyone can point me to a site that shows Rimadyl and MDR1 to be a bad mix, I would appreciate it. The Vet is doing the same as she feels she needs pain meds but wants to make sure it is safe first. -
Normal Behaviour After Desexing?
Karelea Aussies replied to Karelea Aussies's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I did speak to the Vet Thursday around mid day but at that stage she was just sleeping a lot and she advised that it may take her longer to shake off the anasthetic. At that stage she had not had Rimadyl though. The erratic behaviour did not start until much later in the day. Thinking back it might have been already dark when she really started going weird, as I was worried about not being able to see her if she got into the yard. We are not much better this morning with her refusing to leave her crate even though she has been in since 11pm. I am waiting for the vets to open to call them.
