  1. If it were a bigger dog that defended itself we would be reading about a vicious dog attacking a respected member of the community. Don't care how big (or little) the dog is this guy is an a**hole.
  2. We have had two with Pyro. One was a bitch that had never been mated. Unfortunately we lost her to it. We had an emergency desexing done but she passed away while coming out of anesthetic due to massive blood loss. The other has had three litters. We were able to treat it with three weeks of daily injections and tablets. Can't recall the name of the stuff used but we were lucky to catch it in time. I have since had her desexed as I don't want her to go through it again.
  3. Personally I have no problem with the concept of judges using social media, however like any person that uses it, it really is a matter of what is actually said that could become an issue. Congratulating eTc is all good but when the comments start to put down certain peoples dogs or lines that becomes a problem. It is important to remember that you could be judged by your comments on these sites. Even if they don't accurately reflect your character
  4. The way I read this it's not the lead that is a problem it's the dog. This type of dog (or at least it's behaviour) is the reason the menacing dogs law has been introduced into NSW. The dog may not be actually attacking but is displaying threatening behaviour. The extending leads can be quite useful but obviously should not be used on a dog with this type of attitude. Also the owner must surely realise that they do not have the control of their dog needed to be able to use such a lead.
  5. Be aware that in NSW debarking can only be done after (a) the council issues an order issued under section 21 of the Companion Animals Act 1998 requiring the owner of the dog to prevent it from barking, and (b) a statutory declaration by the owner of the dog to the effect that, unless the operation is performed, the owner would need to have the dog destroyed so as to comply with the order. Otherwise you are breaking the state law. You can not just go and get it debarked. Basically you have to wait until the neighbours complain enough that the council provide a notice of intent that unless dealt with the dog will be removed. Then you have to try and get the order issued as some councils wont issue the order but instead will push for the dog to be removed. We had someone locally that had to surrender his dogs as the council would not consider an alternative and the whole issue was because the owner would not pay council land rates. So the council sort of decelred all out war on him. Also be aware that some debarking only lowers the pitch and results in the low rasping noise mentioned in a prior post. However it can also result in total removal of any noise. We once had a dog that came to us from another show home and it had been debarked and it simply could not make any noise at all.
  6. I will never own a straight pole only trolley after being there when a dog I bred, owned by another exhibitor was being pushed out of the Adelaide Royal just ahead of me, the dogs tail became wrapped around the wheel, He was screaming in pain and wrenching his body in an attempt to free himself. I tried to cut all the hair to free him, long Sheltie hair, while his owner held him against the side to stop him pulling away. When it wasnt working we got help to actually break the wheel off, but he was still trapped with the hair around the wheel, eventually I cut all the hair that was caught and could see that the tail tip was torn off with only a small piece of skin still connected him to the wheel, I had to cut it off, so we could free him, there was just no other way. it actually caused major lifelong damage to his spine and his renal function as well as giving him a short tail. I would love to be able to buy a lighter trolley especially now Im getting older but will never risk those straight pole trolleys. It was one of the wooden trolleys (thats what most of us had 16 years ago) and yes it had wheel protector bits. We have two straight pole type trolleys and have never had such a problem occur nor seen any others have such a problem.
  7. Have to feel sorry for some though. Our local council has a dept. manager with a very strong indian accent. Was talking to him the other day and he was telling me how many people he rings thinks its a scam and hang up on him. Makes it hard for him to do his job.
  8. Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done because these calls are usually from overseas and it's really hard to track down the perpetrators. The best thing that can be done is to make sure that as many people as possible are aware of the scam and so significantly reduce the chances of them catching someone in their net. The smaller the catch the less likely they are to bother with it. Spreading the word is the best action right now. Another thing to consider is that what they are doing may not be illegal in their country. Unfortunately they need to be prosecuted in the country they are in at the time the law has been broken (if there is a law to break)
  9. You guys realise that they have just made it super easy to, and clearly have the intentions to, add more breeds to BSL under the menacing category? Owners of any large, powerful breed should be very afraid. They wouldn't have put that in unless they intend to use it. May not apply to large breed dogs only.
  10. Thank you Nancy. May have to get onto the show sec and sort this out.
  11. I just received my gate passes back for an up coming Ag show, and I was curious the number of passes received. There used to be a formula where the number of passes was determined by the number of dogs you entered. I just looked up the regs on the ankc site and it appears they have changed the ruling to the effect that an exhibitor does not have to pay to enter. We normally enter 6-7dogs per show and the extra passes were for family to help handle. Now it seems that no matter how many dogs you enter you only get one pass if all the dogs are in one name. So it raises the issue. Do I spend extra to pay for my other handlers to get in the gate, or do I enter fewer dogs so I won't need the other handlers? To spend more or save, that is the question?
  12. I attached a thin strip of Aluminium to the vertical bars and use that to hang the metal water bowls on.
  13. I know of a few clubs that use these to cart out and put away their ring equipment. I had thought of using one but fitting in with all the other crap going to and from the show was a problem, but at the show they would be perfect.
  14. This has been law in NSW for over 13 years along with having to be over 8 weeks old, yet there are still those that sell/giveaway unchipped dogs and under-aged pups. Four different litters on one of our local Facebook sales pages today alone. Including one litter stating they want extra if you want your pup immunised.
  15. Yeah I had a dog like that once. Do anything you asked it to do, providing you didn't actually ask it?
  16. So they are still waiting on their litter. This ad came up once before a couple of months back.Same photos Same wording.
  17. Council have a right to enter your property/land but RSPCA have no legal powers to enter without a warrant. Useful info on your rights in link below. UK based but same here. http://the-shg.org/Basic%20legal%20advice%20for%20pet%20owners.htm Not the same here at all. In some states RSPCA can enter land without a warrant. All they need is a reasonable belief that an act of cruelty has occured or is about to occur. NSW is one such state but to my knowledge is not the only one. In fact the current legislation gives RSPCA inspectors greater powers than police without accountability.
  18. I stopped at Lake Boga on the way to Cohuna/Kerang for tea about 2 years back. The pub there (from memory the commercial)did pretty good meals. Would be worth looking into.
  19. I would be informing the responsible council.
  20. Further thinking on this issue, but none of the shows we do in a 500k radius of us even has neuters so there would be none available for the juniors to use anyway.
  21. Personally I am all in favour of juniors. Unfortunately our local shows do not have them so my nephew is always wanting to go away for shows so he can do juniors. Unfortunatley for me I have to reorganise my travel plans to fit him in. We usually take a small bus away to sleep in but it only carries two people so last time we travelled we also had to take a car as well for the three of us. Extra cost for me but I am prepared to spend it if he is prepared to do juniors as this is the future of our hobby. As for the dogs being handled, surely this is where the parents of the child and the owners of the dog need to step up. If the parents are confident the child can handle the dog and if the owner of the dog is confident the dog can be handled by a small child then they decide. Also they must accept the consequences if anything goes wrong due to a bad decision. Frankly I would rather be beaten by a junior anyday. They get a buzz out of it and don't show any of the nastiness sometimes seen in those that should be mature enough to know better. As for a neuter being less aggresive I can say from experince this is not always the case.
  22. Totally OT (sorry mantis) but I actually think that's fair enough. They have no option not to be there so they should be able to expect as safe an environment as possible. Sorry O/T but they do have an option. Don't commit a crime. If they are there its because they broke a law and are paying a debt to society.
  23. Rather an ironic statement Oakway especially when one of the recommendations is to look at ways to make it easier for people with pets to get rental properties
  24. they could if they policed them - made sure everyone had paid their rego and fined them if they didnt ,made sure everyone changes their details and fine them if they dont , make sure every one has a dog on a leash and fine them if they dont ,make sure every dog bred has a chip as has been mandatory since 97 and fine them if they dont . One ranger doing a doork nock to check every house hold that has a dog is compliant and if they are not issuing fines and that every household has adequate fencing etc to contain the size and type of dog they had etc and prevent a dog issue before they have to be called out to them would make them millions. And therein lies the problem. Don't enforce whats already in existence just bring in more laws that won't be enforced. Trouble is the government works on the theory something must be done this is something therefore we must do it. Just in the last two days I have seen locally two litters of pups being advertised. One at five weeks of age for giveaway (advert in local paper). The other now at six and a half weeks for $50.00 (facebook local market page). Pretty obvious none of these will be vacc or chipped. Even though its been law since 1997/1998. Also the number of people seen around here allowing there dogs to walk along side busy roads with their dog off lead. I have already emailed my local member again about these recommendations and await a reply but you can bet I will be bringing up the lack of enforcement and education under the current laws.
