Any Snake-bite 1st-aid For Dogs?
Alyosha replied to dogmatic's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Injectable vitamin C - given for whatever reason - should be given intra-muscular and not under the skin. I suppose it's a moot point if you are injecting as an attempt to save a dog's life... But it will abscess if given under the skin, and is better absorbed intra-muscular. It is quite a thick liquid and a painful injection. If the animal doesn't protest about it be worried. If they start to, they may be improving... -
Angeluca?? Anything stirring yet??? :crossfingers: More pics of puppies for inspiration... And finally, one of our fatty-boombah girls, Miss "Penny". "Sooooo much milk...."

Danois I would hazard a guess to say that it may be genetic rather than anything else as your guy has maintained that deep colour on the spine. A canine version of "countershading"? Does he come from all black lines or is there the possibility of a dilute gene in there?
-
Always more than willing!! The only danger is photo overload... :D
-
The Goldie litter? Nearly due to pop. I don't think we had Labs. We had Danes though - and now Dobes - Yay!! More photos as requested... :D

Were they effective? Considering the export cruelty seems to be ongoing I'm not sure what they were doing...? -
Crate To Borrow Act/qbn?

The op shop in Crawford St Qbyn (I think it is Salvos?) has a box of dog blankets at the back for $5 each. But you'll have to beat me to it!! -
OMG!!! Look at that belly!! Methinks November is shaping up to be a plentiful month... What's your guess on numbers in there?

Copper deficiency can cause fading as well. Black or dark animals can have significantly higher trace copper requirement than light coloured ones. Adding seaweed powder to food can bump up trace minerals safely.

In horses that colour/marking would be called "countershading" and is genetic. If he has two black parents, he can still be a genetic "hybrid black" if there is fawn back further (I think...). This page has some info on pug colour genetics: http://www.tantraspugs.com/pug-colour-genetics.asp Edit - this one looks good too :): http://roxmarr.webs.com/pug-colours

Obviously the fresh paint is the tastiest!! -
Poor girl! I hope she has a reasonably comfortable week coming up. Can't wait to see your little golden treasures!! And here's a baby pic to get you even more clucky... :D

Crikey! They came through large didn't they?? Sorry about the thread hijack. Fingers crossed for a nice safe delivery for you now Angleuca! That belly looks possibly deceptively full.... :D

Oh crap Monteba I hope you are feeling better!! Trisven the dark colours should change to a range from gold through to mahogany red, with the back ear fringes. Most of the sables have black masks as well I think. So the mahogany ones could end up a little like this: [ Some may go more gold like this: And some could even lose much of their sabling and go very gold like this: This last boy was born like this. So lacking the black mask but otherwise similar:

Pics: Mum with the first half of the horde... And the second half - waiting their turn. Mum finds all 12 of them at once just a little overwhelming. Can't say I blame her!! We had a good birth. A couple of breech ones and one that was quite limp and scared me. But only for a few moments. It just seems an eternity at the time!!
-
Well we started at 3:30am and finished at 11:45am... We have 12. Exactly the same as our last litter - 9 boys and 3 girls. Bizarre. But gorgeous, gorgeous babies. All safe and well (touch wood!) And mum doing very well - although exhausted. :dancingelephant:

Wow busy times Angeluca! It will be great for you to see him again though. Love those little reunions! After a long night last night of heavy panting and restlessness Ursie has settled a little bit (but not until 4:30am). But temp is 36.5 this morning so I think we will be off and running shortly!! Have dragged myself into work to get some things done in case I don't get back next week - leaving her under teenage son's watchful eye until I go home at lunchtime. But I'm feeling the effects of little sleep - a familiar puppy-related feeling!!!
-
So: Zoi due 6/11 Danes due 11/11 and Goldies due 12/11. The countdown is on!! I don't think we'll make it to the 6th... Will be doing her temps from this Friday onwards... Exciting but nervewracking! My fingernails may not survive...

And the blacks are just gorgeous!!

Aww. Dear girl. It's a little harder when their background is unknown. Most of them are very big hearted though - and once they open that heart and let you in it's amazing.

I couldn't agree more Brandiandwe. When I used to foster, my favourite (not that I had favourites of course...! ) was a plain black boy. He was in woeful skinny condition when he arrived, with ulcered sores from the wet concrete in the pound. He certainly was not the prettiest... He was also the most aloof greyhound I had met. For most of his two week quarantine he didn't even make eye contact with me. I might as well have been on a different planet. He would even walk on a lead or be patted - but not really acknowledge anyone. I would take his food into the run and put it down, then just sit awhile - just being in his company. He would eat and go and lie on his bed and sleep. On day 10 I opened the gate and he launched into my arms and nearly knocked me over. He was the most devoted and loving dog of all of my fosters. Absolutely lovely. They are all individuals and I have had low to high energy ones. One girl ran all day like a kelpie with a squeaky toy in her mouth - waiting for someone to throw it. Completely tireless! Some you couldn't get off their beds! Some that were not remotely small dog or cat safe, and some that were. One beautiful black and white boy who went to live with two elderly disabled pugs and was such a gentleman. But yes, people can easily be swayed by colour etc. Personality means so much more.
