  1. Resident blacks over a certain size won't tolerate browns in their territory. So although browns will still come through - they can be very mobile sometimes - they won't stick around. A dear friend in Qld lost her far too young borzoi (that I bred) to a snake just the other night - and the speed with which he was gone makes me think Coastal Taipan. Am glad we don't have those guys!! Big bluetongues are great too - if you can train the dogs to leave them alone. They will certainly take on a brown snake that enters their territory.
  2. It doesn't matter Kevsam. Australian products are assessed for suitability to our conditions, and the manufacturing conditions meet Australian standards. Overseas products may be compliant with other countries regulations. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority regulates Vet products. Information here: http://www.apvma.gov.au/supply/import.php
  3. Oh Showdog my computer hates me. I even get a blank spot in your post where the Gundog link should be. Sigh. Maybe me computer doesn't approve of me watching them?? I can see all the other links. I have refreshed the youtube page too and still don't get a Gundog one. Huge congrats Yurrugar on your little ETT!! She looks absolutely fabulous. You must be very proud indeed.
  4. I wanted to watch the gundog Group judging but can't find it on their site. Am I losing the plot? Or is it right there and I'm just not seeing it??
  5. Aww. Cute photo. Am hoping you get some good answers from the specialist.
  6. I know brown snakes are lethal as hatchlings. Not sure on RRB. You can't eradicate snakes, they live all over this country. You can only try and minimise their comfort in your surroundings. They will still move through anyway, even if you have no habitat at all.
  7. You know what was also nice? Watching the Utility Group, and seeing the Standard poodle without an enormous towering topknot - he just looked stunning with a smaller less hairsprayed one. And the Shihtzu without the teased up topknot - fantastic!!
  8. Where can I watch that? My friend that i'm going on holiday with in April is over there with the Sealys and they cleaned up BOB & best bitch (or whatever the class is called I'm not up with the show terms in the UK).... And of course I'd love to see the Skye! Terrier Group judging is here :D :
  9. No Tralee, the councils are not giving their side of the story - a balanced story makes for poor news. If you believe everything that the commercial media publishes that's your own lookout. That doesn't mean that it is factual...
  10. According to the NSW Road Users Handbook(p134) when parked: If you are more than three metres away from your vehicle you must: • Remove the key out of the ignition. • Lock all doors and windows if there is no one in the vehicle. My dog's comfort comes first. And there's no offence for leaving a vehicle unsecured (although insurance companies might not like it - again, tough luck. Dogs are more important). But there is for leaving a dog to suffer in a hot car...
  11. Donatella some people live long distances, even hours driving away from shops. That doesn't mean they should never take their dogs out with them. It all comes down to common sense really, which is pretty much uncommon these days...
  12. I have a copy of "The 1888 Modern Borzoi Standard Description by Nicolai Yermolov". It is obviously slightly later than the above mentioned one. Maybe that says something about changes during the time period? As the Yermolov family had been breeding Borzoi for two centuries prior, it may well have been the publication of a standard that the family had held for a long time. It would be difficult to obtain old borzoi documents from Russian history given the isolation that many of the old time kennels existed in, and the high esteem their breeding records would have been held in. Jealously hoarding information and bloodlines is not a new practice in the dog world...
  13. I think a whole lot of the control over the industry lies with consumers. Customers drive any market, whether legitimate or otherwise. You can create all the laws you like and if people will still pay for a product then the practices will continue. If legislation was the answer to protecting animals the worldwide illegal trade in wildlife wouldn't exist. Education of end consumers is far more important.
  14. Congrats Becks! Just watched the Terrier Group judging again. Have serious Sealyham and Skye envy... And Irish...
  15. Most new regulation and law imposing conditions on dog breeders make it much easier to operate large commercial facilities and harder for small home breeders. This is a recent fact of life sadly. With people jumping up and down for tighter controls and conditions - conditions become standardised to levels that cannot be met in family homes anymore. Thus commercial breeders who are willing ethically and able financially to create these facilities survive and flourish. Home and family breeders are rapidly being legislated out of existence.
  16. If the dogs is visibly distressed then no, it's not ok. But (at least in NSW) there are no laws against it or time restrictions etc. I would think anyone that is prepared to step in and possibly damage a vehicle to assist an animal needs to have a witness at the very least, and someone with a video on a phone or similar would be even better. If it saves you from a lawsuit, take a second or to to photograph and/or film the situation. I leave mine in the car sometimes if I run into the shops on the way home from a show etc. But usually in the country so I leave it running with the aircon on... No dog complaints yet! But reasonably low-risk areas for car thieves. I have in the past taken a spare key and left it running but locked with the dogs in it. I don't even like having mine in the car while I fill it without the aircon going. But mine's a diesel and uses hardly any fuel to idle.
  17. I do love getting cash at all breeds, rather than a token prize. But a trophy at a specialty is really nice. Again it needs to not be token. Our club have perpetuals which are nice, but we have a history of just giving out whatever is in the price range for trophies/prizes which is crap. I've had enough plastic photo frames and cheap cutlery and mug sets to last me a lifetime thanks - more than one is more than enough!! I'd rather cash if that is the case - I'll go and buy a bottle of bubbles.
  18. It's an important aspect to remember SSM - many of pigging bred dogs are not pet material. They are neither bred nor raised to be. I am glad the court took the matter seriously though. The medical issues and general keeping sound pretty woeful, and certainly compounded by the bitch being underweight. There are five names mentioned in the follow up article: Dutch, Billie, Jasmine, Milo and Leo . So maybe it's the mum that's not mentioned. Maybe she was pts, maybe she was adopted internally, maybe she is still not available. Jumping to conclusions and presumptions is pointless. Anyone really concerned could ring the RSPCA concerned and simply enquire. They may or may not tell. I do wish they wouldn't call them Wolfhounds. They are crossbreds. Maybe I'm pedantic...
  19. And Government standards too. Which include efficacy and safety: http://www.apvma.gov.au/
  20. The hound lineup were lovely - what a gorgeous Bloodhound!! Well done to the Petite - fingers crossed she can crack the Best in Show now!!!
  21. From a medicinal point of view, I would think it highly unlikely without major side effects at the minimum. It would be something that would not be likely to pass regulatory requirements in Australia. Never say never. But I think if you consider how much effort has gone into creating human reproductive inhibitors over years and years, and things are still not failsafe - very unlikely. AR scare tactics? Or AR dreams perhaps?
  22. Yep. Very normal. When one is undescended like that, desexing will be minor abdominal surgery instead of just via the scrotum. Which obviously is more intense for the vet and a larger op for the pup.
  23. And then the hound group judging at 6:05 EST. :D
  24. Awesome Sway! I've been procrastinating about doing my boy's teeth before the Royal but have just bought one of yours and it looks like it will make life much easier. Mine get bones which are great for cleaning back teeth. But as my breed have such a long jaw, and chew most bones with their back teeth, canines in particular can still get a build up - even with bucketloads of bones. The only bones I've ever had that cleaned front teeth as well were whole sheep heads (not for the faint hearted!). As they spent days on them, tearing all the bits off the heavy bones with their front teeth, they worked beautifully. But not that easy to come across unfortunately...
  25. Oh Fliss that's terrible. It might be worth reporting to NSW police as well as the AFP in case someone hands it in on the way home. They have a separate computer system. Not sure if they will link up - probably worth the extra phone call. Finger all crossed that it turns up soon for you.
