  1. He's in foster with two litter brothers (these guys are pretty special aren't they Plan B - definite heart stealers!). And no doubt back on a couch where he belongs... He'll no doubt need some unwind time after struggling in shelters now for (I think) about 12 months or more. But after that he will likely be looking for a permanent couch to call his own, so if anyone comes across a potential home... I'm still grinning about him being out of a shelter! :D Not that he hasn't had the best care, it just seemed to not be an environment he could cope with.
  2. I can't update title from my phone but Roy has found foster care today. :)
  3. I know that feeling... I too hold their head with fingers under the side of their lower jaw. Sometimes it seems like it anchors them a bit and they seem more settled and comfortable. Doesn't always stop the back legs from fidgetting though... :D
  4. So the topline has been discussed, but what can GSD breed people tell us outsiders about hocks? Simply saying hocks should not be loose on an adult doesn't really cover some pretty widespread concerns. Why do so many appear so badly cowhocked? An out and back in a GSD at a show makes me shudder. And I grew up with the breed and love them - so not trying to be nasty. But I simply cannot usually bear to watch the breed judging at shows.
  5. I'm guessing he doesn't stand still yet without both your hands on him?? I'd do Meeas trick...
  6. Does he respond to squeaky toys? Sometimes an unusual noise up at shoulder height can get their attention in the right direction!
  7. Dear Roy is an Afghan x Pharaoh hound. A puppy farmer in Sydney bred a couple of these litters a few years ago before her breeding stock was rescued. Roy was a cherished indoor pet and is a gentle and sensitive soul. Not nervous but just quiet. But his owners went through a separation and he started being left for increasing times in the backyard. The first time he escaped and found his way to Blacktown pound he was claimed. The next time it happened he was surrendered. AWL stepped in and rescued him from the pound. He has been with them since - which is now a long time. He has always struggled in the shelter environment, suffering contact dermatitis on his feet and now developing some reactivity towards other dogs. Which frankly don't find surprising at all considering his breed and environment. My hounds don't generally like non-sighthounds getting in their physical space at all, I'd say he's done remarkably well so far! This has now resulted in him being re-assessed, withdrawn from adoption and very much on borrowed time. He is available to rescue only... If anyone can think of anything at short notice please let me know. He deserves a chance. I could possibly temp care him but would need a rescue group to step in and deal with AWL. Longer term foster would be perfect, as I don't doubt a few months of being a housepet again is exactly what he would need.
  8. I give it during whelping - after the first pup and from then on between each one. But I don't give it after, as I give milk replacer a couple of times a day to encourage extra fluid and mineral intake - and it has high available calcium.
  9. There's lots of "natural" stuff in the world that shouldn't be eaten...
  10. Also highly possible that she has been trained in "pet nutrition"... Usually by one of the big companies like Hills.
  11. Who knows how it really works. I really wanted my first choice but figured if they didn't approve it and I didn't suggest others they would just send it back. I got about number four. Now my first choice was not ever used in Australia, and I couldn't find any links to it in the breed worldwide. For the rest of my list I put down names that I sort of liked but I didn't research them. The one I got is an active prefix in the same breed overseas... I wasn't too impressed when I found out as I thought that was the whole point of them checking. Plus the one I got has since been used as a celebrity name for some weirdo on Eurovision... So if you google it now that is what you see. Where is mr rolly eyes when you need him??
  12. Erny you would need to look for independent studies as most information about the causes of it that appears on quick internet searches seems to be written by various product-owning companies... For anyone doubting the serious nature of this antibiotic Tylosin (and that includes those who try to say it is not an antibiotic), there is some further information here: http://www.apvma.gov.au/publications/gazette/2001/12/gazette0112p33.php I know this is old but it is also current. Studies on resistance and similar can take very long periods as that is the nature of the problem.
  13. Exactly. No need for calling for new laws, there are already laws in place about this that may not have been complied with. I couldn't agree more. I have lived in neighbourhoods with similarly kept dogs and have seen a great many that are accidents waiting to happen. And yes, that is not a reflection on those who keep pig hunting dogs responsibly. But it is stupid to try and deny that there is a big ignorant idiot factor involved in the hobby as well.
  14. Can of worms... I would only say here, if you are interested in a gsd, you need to be happy with the family movement - out and back and not just from the side.
  15. Three 2m lengths over that span would still have much the same effect. If anything having shorter lengths adjacent would be less stable than one continuous length so possibly even more deterrent?
  16. I have also known of singleton pups that have had very attentive or fussy mothers having problems - not getting enough sleep and even physical injury from her constantly cleaning, fidgeting and moving pup around. That would depend on the mother's experience and temperament too.
  17. Some dried pig based treats have astronomical bacteria counts... And anything imported would also be dubious.
  18. Sorry HA but your cuddle factory analogy made me giggle. But the filthy farm comment is very true. I had a friend who bought (read as "you can have this one or she will be put down") an older bitch from a high volume breeder (purebreds but little different to what would normally be called a puppy farm, just cleaner). She nearly died during desexing and the vet's graphic description of her uterus always haunts me - he said "Wet a tissue and put it on the table. Then try and pick it up without breaking it. That was her uterus. Now imagine that each break bleeds..." Sorry = OT. But yes, I too have seen raffles etc at specific events - for horse services, for sheepdog pups from highly desirable lines etc. But they are very much targeted at an audience that have the means and knowledge to take on an animal for reasons other than impulse and general cuteness.
  19. And yes at the Dogs ACT grounds they have camping, powered sites and showers. :)
  20. What is with people and making threats? Seems some people's first resort to something they don't agree with is aggression. A bit sad really. Glad they've changed the raffle prize but I agree with others here - if threats were made that's just lame.
  21. It would depend on state legislation.
  22. He wasn't allowed to have dogs, he had a court order banning him from owning them. Sounds like he possibly wasn't the most likely person to abide by rules and orders... And he had dogs anyway...
  23. I'm not a PHD holder on bats... Am only repeating what experienced bat carers have told me.
