  1. yeah, I don't normally advertise my husbands good deeds but it was a sad irony that this happened at the same time as that "other" topic started And good to see it DD. Too many of the little things that cops do every day go unrecognised, but can make the biggest differences for somebody out there. Hope he's ok after being at the scene as well. It's nice you two seem very supportive of each other.
  2. Well said Maddy. I did wonder what folks here would be saying if a member had posted about walking past the property and being rushed by the same dog. I do think the dog's owners might have let him down.
  3. Hells bells Jed. Certainly a clueless response, bordering on offensive... (bolding in quote is mine) Go back and re-read the article. The officer that shot the dog was a male. The dog was reported to have "approached the members aggressively". And the last incident you heard of was allegedly 4 or 5 years ago. The most recent of "many". This must be some new definition of the word "many" that I was previously unaware of... Hollowpoint police rounds do not go right through. Like I said before they are designed for impact. They go in with a big belt and an impact designed to (hopefully) stop a threat in it's tracks. Shooting a hole through something rarely stops it - police ballistics people do actually know that.
  4. Desertdobes thankyou to you and your husband for taking these guys in. Hoping some NOK can be found asap who are willing to care for the poor little guys.
  5. Indigirl in my last litter I had a pup born with a broken tail. No option but to dock it (or euth, but I wasn't prepared to). The vet docked it at a few days old when dewclaws were done. The procedure was recorded on the vet's system. He then had to do a form for Dogs NSW to declare the dog "legally docked", which I was supposed to send to Dogs NSW to have his papers amended to reflect. Even though he was on Limit reg that was supposed to be done before sale or transfer. It wasn't complicated. I actually didn't follow up on the Dogs NSW records as pup found a pet home in Hawaii where his tail is an oddity but certainly not an illegality.
  6. Don't look at the Saluki standard one then... But it is lacking in many regards. I also find it amazing that breeders wouldn't just be considering good temperament in regards to socially acceptable dog behaviour, but in relation to what the standard says. Ours says: Sensitive, alert and aloof. Which yes, is just a few words. But they do say a lot if you think about them. I don't want to breed Borzoi that have temps that are correct and lovely for very temperamentally different dogs like Labs. I want them to be true to their breed. I want them to be sensitive - it is something that I, and many other breed fanciers, adore about them. That word encompasses a whole attitude that can have so many other adjectives involved. The extension to the standard does expand a little: The Borzoi should be sensitive, with quiet dignity. He should be alert and far seeing, always ready for the chase. This should eliminate any specimen of undue shyness or aggressiveness.
  7. And those are the safe ones that you only need tetanus shots for - not the scary human ones that you have a three month wait on HIV and Hep B results... Three months of not knowing and putting your life on hold. Every time... Like Desertdobes said - walk a mile. edit to add quote
  8. Perhaps you don't realise how fast cops are taught to draw and fire? Standard drill is draw and fire three shots in two seconds... Things can go pear shaped very, very quickly for police. They are trained accordingly.
  9. Completely the opposite of my experience with them over breed rescue.
  10. entry wounds can be very small and easily covered by a skin fold/hair ruff....they are only the size of the projectile , usually . The exit wound would be a bit larger, and probably messier . If there was one. With a police round, its not likely. If they were using usual police rounds they would be more likely to leave a bigger entry and no exit. They are designed for impact not penetration. These aren't rifle rounds.
  11. The story is sad but raises lots of questions. The back of the dog's neck is visible in the photo and there is no obvious wound there...
  12. Does she have any particular drinking habits that could be contributing? Sounds odd that it happens at the same sort of time. How frustrating. I really feel for you.
  13. Well said Showdog. And sighthoundGazer, I say pfft to the what breed is for me things. Last one of those I did I got Malamute... Lovely dogs, but not for me. I would also prefer a greyhound in an apartment to a whippet. If you want a large sighthound in a small space, normally I would recommend an adult rather than a pup. This is because they often develop better as youngsters with access to free running. Walking on-lead just doesn't have the same effect really, as running and turning and building strength that supports those big joints and bones as they grow. Go with your heart, not with the preconceived notions of others. :)
  14. Are you able to cut out any dry, kibble type foods? Or go grain fee. There is an acupressure point in the stifle/knee that is reputed to work very well at relieving bloat. Have you heard of/tried it?
  15. Great to hear positive updates for both Scout and Koda!! :D I did read through the whole thread with a frown on my face wondering what dooshing was...
  16. And just for extra reassurance, some info here: Acute toxicity The acute toxicity of Toltrazuril in rat, mouse and chicken is very low. Rats and chicks are slightly more sensitive than mice. The LD50 in the rat rangend from 1600-5000 mg/kg b.w., in the mouse it was approx. 5000 mg/kg and in chicks 1000 mg/kg, which is more than 100 times the recommended therapeutic dose of 7 mg/kg b.w. Further toxicity studies Toltrazuril has no influence on the central nervous system, nor does it interfere with blood coagulation, it causes no haemopathies and exhibits no bronchoactive or diuretic effect. Toltrazuril is not embryotoxic or mutagenic. http://www.baycox.es/index.php/fuseaction/download/lrn_file/Bayer_Baycox_Solution_25.pdf LD50 is a term that indicates what is a lethal dose for 50% of a affected group. Which sounds horrible yes. But what that shows you above is that this drug needs a frankly massive dose to do that. The further toxicity info should help reassure you that she should have no effects or damage from a small overdose.
  17. It should be fine. Everything I've read about Baycox says it is a safe drug with a high safety margin. Mention it to your vet, and maybe give your pup some probiotics when the course is finished. But don't beat yourself up.
  18. No. It depends on the Act. It will specify who are authorised under it.
  19. Sounds about right. If that is the case any offences referred by council would be more likely to be under rules and regs that are council responsibility, like housing standards or animal numbers etc.
  20. Add the online lynch mob phenomenon and the potential for this sort of outcome just goes up and up.
  21. A very sad story from the US, where an apparently sustained animal rights campaign against a family of dog breeders has resulted in tragedy: http://www.thedogpress.com/Editorials/suicide-murder-NC-dogs-seized-ED138.asp
  22. And the dog in the Deeon case was a pig hunting dog. So already subject to Dangerous Dog restrictions under the Act. Should have been in a suitable enclosure etc. If the law had been complied with the child would be alive. Although this new thing doesn't necessarily sound like massive overkill - I agree with the thread title. How about enforcing what is already legislated instead of bringing in new things??
  23. Very nice to hear that it went well and was conducted sensibly. From both sides... The vet opinion is sadly not surprising. Sad how little basic knowledge of purebred dogs that some vets have. I know someone that took their Borzoi to a vet and when one of the staff asked what he was the vet replied "A staghound cross". Where's Mr Rolly Eyes when I need him.
  24. And definitely a packing up fairy. I don't mind the setting up bit, but packing afterwards is the pits.
