  1. Get a professional in. Your dog might not be exhibiting aggression now, but as he grows he might realise that agression = things that make me scared go away. It only has to happen once. I have a girl who was used as a breeding bitch at a puppy farm and for a good year she would just shake and hide away if she was scared. Then one day she charged someone. A lightbulb went off - hey this works! It sure is a lot more effective than shaking. She is particullary territorial of the car so she is belted in.
  2. He might have been trying to rob your house, rather than steal ziggy. Definitely report to the police and let your neighbors know what happened. Look at swann for alarm systems, especially the reconditioned ones.
  3. Julie started this thread about the positives, let's keep it this way otherwise it will get deleted and the positive posts will be lost.
  4. Steve you raise a good point - have people made arrangements if they are sick long term? Do people have clear, written down instructions explaining what to do?
  5. My younger sister will take fergus (both her and her husband have agreed), and Lucy will go to heaven, unless a qualified trainer will take her.
  6. I thought we had established that white boxers were more prone to problems, and that it takes a while to discover if the pups are deaf. Also that they cannot be registered and cannot be sold by registered breeders? We don't even know that there are boxer breeders in Australia that are breeding and culling puppies these days. Save your sympathy for the poor dogs that suffer for their lifetime as a result of careless and irresponsible breeding, not the ones that avoid suffering. . Rotties are more prone to parvo than other breeds. Great Danes are more prone to bloat. Should they be killed at birth too? Maybe white boxers should be allowed to be registered on limited register only. I don't have any issues with a breeder PTS a deaf dog, but it seems like the KC rules give them no choice.
  7. Contact mita in this forum - she knows a lot of people in the Tibetan breed world.
  8. I second contacting PACERS - they can help nut out a plan. Your mum might need a bit of short-term support to walk/care for the dogs while things are being sorted and this is where they can help too.
  9. I wonder if it is just putting a bit of pressure on the right spot. A behaviourist showed me a touch technique just below the shoulder blades that instantly changes my girl. I might try getting a teeny-weeny backpack for her. She is also less reactive when she has her raincoat on as she isn't 100% happy to be wearing it.
  10. Take your dog to Ray Ferguson at Monash vets (he only works Monday & Tuesday). He does trigger point therapy and my boy went from pain to running around like a loon in 2 visits. He breeds greyhounds so understand physiology - a normal vet just doesn't cut it for these sorts of things IMO.
  11. Humping isn't always about sex. It can be a way to assert dominance. I'd get him desexed (at 13 months, he will be fully grown?) and teach him some manners. Humping = leash on and removed from the park. Be aware that some dogs don't like it and may retaliate.
  12. I'd say a rescue greyhound that has been tested with cats. Accrue couch potato that I think would fit in well with your household.
  13. Mine solved the brick game very easily. Unfortunately I lent it to someone and they never returned it. Worth getting a few for rainy days. I do have the new "Dog Fighter" (terrible name) one and it is much harder. Apparently there are some vids on youtube that show you how to make your own finders-style games with muffin pans.
  14. A few things spring to mind: * No breeder, no matter how good, can guarantee that a dog won't get hip dysplasia. The parents can have great scores and produce bad pups. Obviously, having good parents decreases the chances of problems in pups but it still happens. So the breeder is fibbing - any breeder who says "my lines don't have problems" is fibbing! * It can be environmental I believe. Lots of running up and down stairs, jumping, jumping in and out of the car etc can contribute to problems. It doesn't need to be a lot of stairs either. The breeder should have explained this to your brother. Some do, but people are so happy when they pick up their new pup that this kind of info doesn't register. * Most vets can't properly diagnose hip dysplasia and there are very few people qualified in Australia to do a proper hip and elbow score. Of course, most vets don't tell people this. Don't get me wrong, they are still fantastic vets and genuinely believe they are giving good advice. If I was your brother, I'd get someone like Ray Ferguson to do the x-rays and score them before I forked out $$$ for surgery that may be unnecessary.

    Buying A Pup -

The breeder should be doing a lot of socialisation and getting the pups used to new things IMO. Those breeders are out there - worth finding and waiting for.
  16. They're going to send a letter? Really? I would tell the council that is unacceptable and the ranger should pay the people a visit. Oh, and they should get a fine. Just what has to happen for them to take proper action?
  17. Is hte pup advertised on PetRescue? you can get a rescue group to list the pup for you. Also, look there for price comparisons and give these to the vet. Given that you're remote, the vet should knock about $200 off the standard price for mutt puppies, as some homes will need to fly him over.
  18. pebbles - I don't know the other forum but I think it might still be worth reaching out to her and giving her some contacts re: rehoming the whippet if it goes down that path. I know if I needed to rehome my dog I certainly wouldn't come on DOL for advice because I couldn't stand the judgement. However, she needs to know that there are whippet savvy people out there who would take Missy on in a second and give her a good home, with no stone throwing attached. Trading Post etc isn't the way to go.
  19. If it is the person I think it is I hope they don't ring the pound but take up the offer of other whippet people who have said they'll take the dog on.
  20. Just before a dobe went for my boy when he was a pup it did exactly thus - it was prey drive. Some might say that isn't aggression, but the dobe certainly didn't have good intentions!
  21. It can be fixating for aggressive reasons. I'd turn around and walk away. If this is happening at obedience the instructor should be telling the owner to do the same.
  22. Dogs that do ANY protection or bitework in Vic are automatically declared dangerous. This means they can never be offleash, they can never even roam in your garden etc.
  23. If they stopped developing née breeds tears ago, many of us wouldn't have the breeds we love :).
