Feeding Breakfast Before A Trial
megan_ replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Wow! Fergus is going to get a whole bag through if that is the result! Well done Bindi and sheena -
The pacers account details are in the auctions section. Just PM Steve what reference you used so she knows it is for this. I'm on my iPhone otherwise I'd pm you the info!

But I don't think anyone is saying that airedales are aggressive? Were talking about bitch bs bitch in a pack situation. Regardless of breed it wouldn't be my first choice. I also wouldn't take "parents are champions" to equal "has good temperament". Even dogs with excellent temperaments can get into fights - it isn't just the bad dogs they have problems. It is about getting the right temperament for your pack. A dominant bitch might be perfect in one household, but not suited to yours, or vice versa. Is the breeder picking the pup? Have they asked you about your experience& your Scotty? Have they given you a view on what will best suit your needs? Personally, if they didn't do this I'd be walking away. Finally, in my non expert opinion, socializing your dog is going to have very little influence on PACK dynamics, do I don't understand why the dog training poster raised it? Yes socialization is critical etc, but it isn't going to stop a bitch fighting for top spot.

Remember that a lot of plastic isn't food grade, even if it is sold to store pet food.

I have chillydog coats - expensive but warm. Itsmeg on this forum also makes coats. It is important for both humans and dogs to get outside daily for vitamin D - which is essential for both physical and mental health.

What brands do the dogs eat? Some dogs only do well on certain foods so this could help make sure the dogs get the right stuff.

Personally I'd go with a male pup, even if that meant waiting a long time. Girls are called bitches for a reason....sure it can all be fine, but I personally wouldn't risk it, especially with the size difference. A tiff could leave the scotty seriously injured or worse. It may even be fine for a year or two until the Airedale matures and then the girls fight for top spot. I'd also follow Diva's advice re: getting a middle-of-the-range dog in terms of assertiveness. My advice isn't based on the fact that you're getting an Airedale, I'd give the same advice regardless of breed. That said, the terriorists can be more feisty than other breeds, so it is even more important.

It is the law everywhere. Some pounds do let you look after a stray in your house though. Your friend needs to ring the pound, report a stray and ask if she can look after it during the lock up period. What the vet wanted to do is also against the law - he can't kill a dog that hasn't gone through the pound system or if the owner hasn't consented. Rebanne is correct - lots of lost dogs look like they have no one to love them, that is what living in the rough does to them. The owner might have been treating the blood condition, but the dog got lost and so hasn't had the treatment. If someone found Nahla and thought "she looks like a pitty. The pound will kill her so we'll keep her" I doubt very much that you'd be happy with that.

Need Advice About Potentially Giving A Home To A Rescue
megan_ replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
What cosmolo said. I adopted a severely fearful dog and it is not something I would ever do again, as much as I love her. She is an excellent watch dog (which seems to be what your aunt is after? Not an actual guard dog) but due to her anxiety she has also had a go at guests that I have welcomed into my house. It takes a lot of work go manage a fear aggressive fog (and she never showed any aggression when I got her). There are plenty of well adjusted dogs living in foster homes that woul suit you Aunt's needs. -

My perplan refund has taken over 5 weeks and it still hasn't arrived. It took 2 weeks to even get the "we've register your claim" letter. I've claimed before so I didn't need his history and all other paperwork was supplied. When I rang ghey said they had a 30 day backlog. Last time it took about 2 months to get my money. this is my only gripe about them and I've heard a lot of people complain about it. If you have so many backlogs you nerd more staff. They also aren't proactive in letting you know there will be a delay, you have to ring and pester.

The poisoning will count as a pre-existing condition, all poisoning won't be covered I believe. My boy once got a stick stuck in his throat, so all "stick in tnroat" incidence are excluded.

Heartworm Protection Dosage Intervals?
megan_ replied to teekay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you're going to skip doses, then I'd suggest getting a separate intestinal wormsr and skipping heartworm all together in winter (assuming you're not up north where heartworm Gould survive in winter) -
Tess has already explained that she wasn't aiming that at anyone. I took it as a general comment that there are now many people out there with fancy cameras and no skills charging a fortune for pics. I have friends who do that. Tess is a skilled photographer - one look at her blog will show you that. It isn't her business mantra - she isn't setting her standard tO the lowest common denominator? Her standards are hardly that? I understand someone being sensitive when it comes to money and building a business - you need to earn some before you outlay too much on equipment that might never be used.
-
Back on topic, I'm sure if Tess found herself in a pickle she could always hire a back up? She also said that this isn't for weddings, just booked shoots so if something happened it isn't as if someone won't have another opportunity to get great pictures. I don't know her pricing but perhaps her pricing reflects that she is in "building a business" mode, not "I'm a pro" mode?

No one said this - the FIFO worker in the post is single and will kennel the pup50% of the timep
-
If they are single and the pup would be kenneled for 50% of its life then I wouldn't sell them a puppy either. A mature dog with a second carer wouldn't be an issue though. FIFO is a way of life for many people, not just a short term thing. If you're a mining engineer or geologist it is a long term prospect. If it is a short term thing then she should just wait until it is over. Why does she even want a puppy? Ask her how she'd feel if the kennel owner was lying to her and not giving her the standard of care that they had promised? Same thing that she is doing to the breeder.

Teenager Mauled In Savage Dog Attack
megan_ replied to DMA's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I still can't see why this is posted in rescue. If you believe that someone dodgy is selling Amstaff's on dogzonline tell Troy directly. -
I agree with haredown whippets, food is an essential resource to live so a lot of dogs will guard it. It doesn't mean that you're a weak leader. My dogs - who have never fought over food - are fed in their crates. I can happily take food away from them at any time. I did this by training them that giving something to me = you get something better back. Simple, but really effective.

7 Week Old Cane Corso At The Off Leash Park :(
megan_ replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in General Dog Discussion
In these situations it is often best to only give a person one piece of advice so they don't get overwhelmed. I'd focus on bad socialization and the fact that the fog is scared - which can lead to DA and fear aggression. Given that she has a very powerful breed with a string guarding instinct this could be disasterous. -
And sometimes they're not even mistakes - just trial and error. It is pretty common to recommend ceasing a medication if the symptoms only start once the midication is taken.
-
You can buy teeny weeny harnesses. Collar = strangled dog and I doubt he'd do much better in a soft beg.

I meant the lack of trees and natural space for the giraffes. South Africa is so developed that you can only see wild animals in designated parks. Where you at Kruger? Zambia is different though and you could, in hteory, bump into a lion while going for a walk. We went on a 10 day house boat cruise on Lake Kariba (Zimbabwe) which was amazing because you saw all the animals coming for a drink. We even saw elephants swimming across a channel.
-
Where abouts in Africa? Great pics. Hate seeing giraffes on open planes though :-(

Aggression Between Desexed Females
