Dory the Doted One

What's with all the muzzling??? I've had a DA dog before, I never muzzled them ever. But then I had good control on them and they knew when I said "Leave It", it meant do not even growl and look at me when I'm talking to you. And if the dog that was bothering them kept persisting we would "Heel" our way to a safer place, sometimes with a "Please come and get your dog!!", directed at the other dogs owners. I've taken them to dog parks...and I always leave if someone else wants to use the park...simple. Dory has been such a change and a pure joy, because I can take her most places without a bother. LOL. Flip side now. If I want to take her to a park and I notice a dog with DA tendencies....I still leave.

Hi Guys....Looks like Dory has Kennel Cough. She started coughing last night. Just thought I would let you know, cos apart from being at the last meet the only dogs she has socialised with was puppy pre-school the Monday after the meet. Hope all your puppers are okay. In all my years of owning dogs, showing and trialling this is only the second time I've had a dog with Kennel Cough. I hates it already.

Some people will wait to microchip the dog at the time of desexing. If the dog was stolen before it was desexed, and it's owners were waiting that would explain the lack of microchip. Geez, I've known people who didn't know their bitch was in season until she was pregnant. And they were NOT bad owners. A little uneducated, but not bad owners. We are all getting this information third hand. None of us has the true facts. So doing it the legal way should be the only way. Not because we don't give a rats, but because it is the LAW. If we aren't following the law then WE are the irresponsible ones, especially if we do not have the full facts. I'm not questioning anyone's motives. But having witnessed the return of someone's dog that had been stolen, picked up then rehome via a welfare org, the new home had it vet checked discovered it was chipped so FORTUNATELY the new owners contacted the original owners and gave them back their dogs. A lot of assumption made in that case, too. None of it correct in the end. But because someone down the line did the right thing, the best outcome eventuated.

How about Mandatory education of anyone considering purchasing a puppy? I reckon that would be money much better spent. But ofcourse, it is still fraught with opportunities to circumvent the process. Unless you can't register the puppy with your council until you produce said certificate, but still....how many people don't register their pets with council? Educate the buyer a little bit better and let them choose from there, I'm sure most of them would then know who and who isn't a good breeder and the cosnequences of supporting those not caring for their breeding stock correctly. Give them a certificate that states they understand the care requirements of a pet before they get one. No unlike getting a Learners before you can learn to drive. Whatever is put in place, will still need to be followed through on. With no follow through there is NO getting on top of the issue. Now or Ever after. Breeders are not in fear of the Gestapo, they are just tired of being the ones punished with new rules when they are already following the ones currently in place.

I think several points have been missed. This dog does need help and care, that's for sure. But we shouldn't assume that the owners are irresponsible. We can make a likely guess, but it would still all be assumption. It is also not impossible that the dog was stolen, possibly impregnated by they who stole her and then escaped their yard for whatever reason. If the council was amenable, why not notify them of the dog, ask if you can keep her with the proviso that she or her subsequent pups are not to be put into a rehome situation until the required hold period has been met? I've done it with an injured dog. Council said I could hold him for the required period, so long as I advertised him as a lost dog and after that I could consider him mine. In the mean time I paid for all his vet expenses (thank god I worked for a vet otherwise they would have been HUGE). Ofcourse they allowed me that, because they otherwise would have Euth'd him because of his injuries. And I also knew that if owners came along, I could hardly stick em with the bill. I could have asked, but I wouldn't have been too peed off if they refused. Because what if their choice was to have had him Euth'd cos of his injuries too? But that's just me.

This is what I feel. New rules only affect those that follow them, thems that don't, won't and will still continue on their merry way. My RSPCA experience is that they are anti-breeder anyways, backyard, puppy mill or otherwise. In there mind why breed a litter when there are so many dogs looking for homes....well that is what was said directly to me. I'm sure they clean that up for their public image. Gotta try and be all things to all people so you can get your views shoved through. There is just so much stupidity everywhere, I have to admit it tires me out. Will they extend these rules and regs to cover people who breed any living thing? If not why not? Because the same things that happen in the dog world happen in the cat world. And feral cats are a problem everywhere you go, shelters kill far more cats than they the do dogs. Yet I haven't seen any legislation put in place that restricts cat breeders like it does dog breeders. Or are dog breeders the test case? But I'm sure if too many people cry foul, they just put the same crap in place for cat breeders and so on down the line until there is no one speaking out because no one can own any kind of pet anymore. Why new fees and charges? What service do you get for your fees and charges? Oh, is that for the administration of the new rules? Which as we know probably won't get inforced on any one but those already doing it right. Because lets face it, they have all your details so you are easy to track. And unless they get a report on someone not doing it right, they aren't going to investigate just anyone. That's an infringement of their rights, which you gave up when you decided to do the right thing and register yourselves. It's all very well saying, if you are doing it right you have nothing to fear. But why should we be policed cos we ARE doing it right? How about they practise policing what is already in place before they create new crap for people to try and understand and obey. How can they say what is in place is not working when they aren't even enforcing??????? Stupid...stupid...stupid. Why is it that we have this idelogy that if we make rules, it looks like we are doing something. How about actually get off butts and actually doing something, not just talk and legislate. Gah...I could go on, but I'm already not making any sense. I'm just tired of being told what to do. I'm now off to try and find someone who can test Dory's level of obedience and give me a certificate so I can apply for her registration discount. Cos even though I've been an obedience instructor and trainer and I train her at home, I have to get someone elses opinion on that. Cos I guess I can't be trusted to train her properly unless she goes to some Obedience Club (have yet to find one I'm happy with). Wonder how much that will cost me.

I looked after a Rottie that was petrified of my cat. Found out later she lived with some cats that terrorised her and bullied her. My cat thought it was brilliant, as my Rotties at the time weren't very cat friendly. I've had a rottie that was good with cats, but she was socialised as a puppy. Dory (staffy x cairn) 's Oscar the Shark Slayer (Kitty boy) who is a new addition. And he 's her too. Just this morning they were both wrestling in the bath while I was having a shower. And we regularly have Dory pinging off furniture in a cat like fashion. *bat bat* *boink boink* for hours on end.

My main problem with Advance is they charge the same/similar price as the Premium Imported Products. Why? It's suppose to be Australian Made and Owned. I thought it would be cheaper as the rate of exchange would be a non-exsistant issue. When I have asked the Reps why, this is the answer I get.... Because it is a SUPER super Premium food. I kid you not. Plus Dory it hates it and it makes her itchy anway.

Definately. And usually she does it in front of a Crowd!

Well...every Vet clinic I've worked at has taken in any stray and wandering dogs that the Public have found. We give them a thorough once over, give em a drink, check for a chip, call owners if there is any contact details or call the Council if there is none. If it is on the Weekend, Boss will stay behind until council comes to pick up. Fortunately...the council area we are in...DOESN'T harrass us about keeping these animals in clinic until they arrive.

Well, I just got back from seeing a dog I haven't seen for quite some time. Who was doing amazingly great on a prong collar was being a calm and well mannered puppy. Till some other person(not the owner) told them not to use the prong and to let THEM train her on a choke chain. Yeah. I'm real thrilled. Whoever it was has almost ruined a good dog. And the Tool in use was a choke chain. It's not a physical injury, but I hope we can now get the dog over it's fear aggression towards other dogs now. ;) Idiots that think every dog that barks at another dog is doing it because it is being 'dominant'. There is not a smiley that fully reflects my feelings right now.

Well, Dory doesn't act like a Staffy nor does she act like a Cairn Terrier. She has Terrier like attributes in some situations. She is who she is, and I don't try to analyse it as being one cross or another and I just deal with the dog she is at the time she is doing things. We jokingly refer to her little feet stomping on our laps as the 'staffy stomp' as coined by one of our Staffy lovin' friends. And we also jokingly refer to her intense love of the couch as her Staffy self. But I don't think you can pigeon hole these traits as a breed thing....cos I have owned plenty of non-staffy dogs that also did the same things. It just might be because we allow her to hog the couch and sit on our laps. ;)

Her Vulva is all good, Boss checks that each time to be sure. She does have fluffy britches, but she has a very natural slip way for any poop. So no hairs tickling her butt. We have just had a new kitten enter our lives, which is Miss 14's responsiblity. Sometimes she is not quick enough to pick up the food and Dory has had a couple of bowlfuls...it would co-incide with that. So I'm leaning towards an allergy flare up. Miss 14 is now aware and is a bit more conscientious now. I am relieved to know that someone else has had the same sort of allergy reaction. I've seen ears, feet, tummy's and all the usual allergy responses....but an itchy ring? Who would have thought it?!

Thanks Tokkie! I was getting sad there was no Dory piccies. Poor little Ringo. We should try and see if He and Dory will get on someday.

Well that is hardly even a sensible test! Our necks don't even come close to approximating a dogs neck. Oh...and I did know someone who tested it on their own neck....didn't attach themselves to a post, but they tested it on their neck. They still went ahead and used it on their dog, as in their opinion it wasn't that harsh. At the end of the day, if we started training our dogs effectively as puppies we wouldn't have to resort to such tools. But many of us learn as we go by making some errors, some of us are still making them (I know I am, cos I ain't perfect), and many of us take on dogs that came with issues in the first place. By chucking out tools that work to one degree or another we seriously limit our abilities to help all sorts of dogs will all sorts of personalities with their all sorts of problems. And lets face it, you could ban it, but I'm sure someone in a desparate need would only reinvent it again. How many versions of harnesses and head collars are we up to now?

Worked in Welfare for a little while...as I was driving to work I picked up a dog running on a busy, peak hour road. Welfare Org recieved dogs wandering all the time from Council and from Members of Public. The dog had a council tag as it's only form of id, so called council. Ranger came and gave me a thorough dressing down for stopping to pick up the dog. What made it more ironic was he had come to collect a couple of dogs that had been dropped in overnight from his same area. Yeah. That works. It is actually illegal to stop and pick up an uninjured animal, you have to call the council for them to do it. But as we know...they have been known to take their time about these things. Regardless. I still stop and pick them up. And I'm soooooooooo happy when they are microchipped and can be returned witht he council none the wiser.

You could also ask her what she is going to do if she sold her puppy to someone, it developed a hereditary disease common to the breed and the puppy was not able to live a long or healthy pain free exisistant. The owners of the puppy are suitably annoyed and hound and harangue her to do something about it. They ring non stop until she gives them back their money...or threaten to sue because they don't feel they have been sold something that met the expectation. They then go on to besmirch her name to any and all that would stand still long enough to hear their tale and experience of a 'bad breeder'.

Dory sometimes humps when she gets a bit over stimulated, or when she gets conflicted. I don't usually allow it. So I clap my hands and divert her attention to something else. Take her mind of what was bothering her and we are all good. She doesn't physically mount any animals in question, she just stands behind them and air humps...or just air humps. Fortunately it is not something that happens all that often.

I wondered where you guys nicked off too! :D Dory is totally pooped out, she had a ball AGAIN. So pleased to see so many people and puppies! Miss Squish's little foster cuties did so well. I was impressed, and Bentley stole my heart. I apologise for Dory being such a noisy, poop stirring little ratbag. I think she thinks you guys organise the whole event just for her. And Ruger...OMG....Daughter and I were in heaven with Rottie leans, we miss Rotties. Thanks Miss Squish...and thanks Ruger, look forward to seeing him again...and good luck with specialist appointment!!!

Hope no one was suggesting I'm one of those Animal Libbers with an agenda. Because I don't take with their extreme line of thinking, just as I don't like this whole...Only purebred/pedigree dogs or purebred/pedigree dog breeders should be the sole source of dogs. That's just trading one snobbery for another. I don't condone puppymills, I don't condone BYBers breeding purely for profit. I think some 'ethical' registered breeders breed way too many litters, but I also understand the need to maintain a diverse gene pool. The reality is....not everyone wants a purebreed/pedigree dog. In a recent thread someone asked if you had to list 10 breeds you would own...I couldn't come up with 10. Not for the life of me. So because at this time, I don't want to own a pedigree dog I should sod off to some other forum? Or I should bite my tongue and not express my view?

Dory is all good with Pugs. We Fostered a Pug for a short time...little booger that he was. Plus we have had a few through Puppy PreSchool....little boogers they were. ;) No wonder I love Pugs....and no...it's not cos I like boogers. Dors will play with anyone that will chase her.

Ummm....for fear of getting into big trouble on a Purebreed Forum..... Is it going to be a Pro Ethical and Registered Breeder Doco? Or a Anti Puppy Farm Doco? What about the other sources you can get a dog/puppy from? Horror of Horrors...there ARE a lot of people who have NO interest in purchasing a pedigree puppy. But just want a dog or puppy that is a unique individual...ie...Muttley or Heinz Variety. And not all of these people are uneducated, joe public, nit wits...they geniunely have no interest in a purebred or pedigreed dog. And are content to research home breeders who may have one litter only from their bitch and do all the right things just as a ethical breeder would do....aside from breeding to a specific breed standard or from pedigreed/purebred parents. (And I'm not refering to boneheaded twits who are give their cross breed litters stoopid hybrid names like Spanador or Flopsimoppets) :laugh: As I know this is not a popular view.

Oh...we did the check butt check too. Much to her horror. There's no poop. Forgot all about paw paw cream. I think we shall give that a go anyway and see if it helps. It's the only thing I haven't tried. (soothing ointment for an irritated butt that is). I was wondering if she was doing it because it felt good. It's really embarrassing when she drops the butt and does it across the floor in the middle of Puppy PreSchool.
