Weird Habitual Behaviour During Walks
Dory the Doted One replied to samoyedman's topic in General Dog Discussion
*tongue firmly in cheek, no offence intended* He's a Virgo? -
What I meant by my comment about the breed shouldn't matter was because in all of these situations we get hung up on the breed and stop asking the questions of how and why. And the next question of....how do we prevent it from happening again. As has been said already. Any dog can attack and bite. This is far more relevant than....was it a pitty or was it a staffy. If WE can't get past the breed thing, how on earth can we expect the media to.

Next Adelaide Meet - October 3rd
Dory the Doted One replied to MsKatie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just found out. I won't be able to make it. Dory always has so much fun and she really deserves it this weekend too. She's been so good. Well. Except when she distracted me and I went through a red light. -
I'd love to confirm the breed... Why? Does Breed even matter? Not trying to start anything. Just thought that was an interesting comment to make on a forum where the general opinion is DEED, not Breed. So why ask? I'm more interested in whether or not they were the owners and what triggered it, if I had to be curious. And also why you'd pepper spray a P.O'd dog. Does it actually incapcitate them like with people or just annoy them.

Should I Let Lucy Go A Ratting?
Dory the Doted One replied to megan_'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm a sooky la la though. I'd be more worried about injury to her, should she misjudge and the rat get his fangs into her. I've always tried to discourage or redirect that kind of behaviour in my animals. If they need to chase something, chase the ball. If they need to 'kill' something I'd play tug of war or give them a toy they can destroy. Dory took off after paddock bunnies once. My heart was in my throat the whole time, because I wondered how far she would keep running until she'd give up. Or whether she'd string herself up on fencing. It's not their drive I object to. It's the potential for an injury when their drive is so high and they are so focussed that they don't think about things like barbed wire or sharp teethies....or venom. -

Earl is so cool. I love the way the big smoosh just gently slides to the ground and then rolls over for a tummy rub. Have photo evidence too. -

Doggy Day At The Beach
Dory the Doted One replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've only really had a bit to do with one of them, the guy who was cooking the snags. He actually started out in customer service. Council recognised that they needed to inject a bit of people skills into their Rangers. He had no previous animal skills, but very willing to learn. And he seems to actually like dogs! Hope he comes into work soon, so I can tell him how great Ralph is. Bwa ha ha ha. -
Doggy Day At The Beach
Dory the Doted One replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was thinking of sending the Council some feedback. There was some mention that they may make this an annual event. Reckon they need to add a few more things for interest. But at least they tried. -
Doggy Day At The Beach
Dory the Doted One replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dory passed out, woke up, had her dinner and then went back to sleep. She has only just woken up properly, just in time to go to bed. -

Surely you'll just recognise DOLers dogs first More than likely. -
Ummmm. If I'm getting this right...(and I doubt it)...the dog is meant to represent or be representative of the reactive animal nature of man? So why does it have to be a big dog? Why not 'any' dog? If it is the FEMALE owner and the dogs possessive jealous tendency being used to highlight or be representative of these 'animal' instincts in 'man', why not REALLY make a statement and choose something that doesn't have a 'manly' connatation of 'strength' and 'power'? If it is to highlight the 'animal' potential, why not delineate that by using something not typically associated with 'tough' maleness and testoterone? I have some Chihuahuas give me a right good scare. (No offence to Chi's, cos I've seen plenty the complete opposite). And then there was the time a SWF launched at me like a remake of the 'killer rabbit' scene in Monty Python's Holy Grail. (I laugh now, but the little sh*t killed my shirt and narrowly missed puncturing my abdomen). But I may have this completely wrong (probably). I just think as an audience member the message might be a little more poignant if it wasn't given such a stereotypical treatment. I mean, get me thinking for goodness sake! Don't just feed me the answer with such obvious and overused tools like guard/tough breeds gone bad.

Doggy Day At The Beach
Dory the Doted One replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well it will be good to see those of you who can make it. ;) Now how do we find each other in the crowd? Although, Earl is NOT hard to miss. -
For those interested.... City of Charles Sturt Council is holding a Doggy Day at the Beach this Sunday 26th of September, between 11am and 3.30pm. There is a Free BBQ and some fun activities. To register go to the City of Charles Sturt website City of Charles Sturt and put in a keyword search "Doggy" to register. I'm hoping to be there with Dory! I've got a few postcards so you can go into the draw for a basket of doggy stuff.

Sadly, walking them early or late is also the prime time that people with dog aggressive dogs also walk their beasties.

Time To Order Your Christmas Puppies!
Dory the Doted One replied to poodlefan's topic in General Dog Discussion
I only wish I was as clever as you guys. -
I've got Dory's name, my mobile and my BF's mobile (he answers more often than I do). I never thought to put she was microchipped on it. Now I have that excuse to get her a new tag I was looking for.

Yay...more Ruges at DOL meets. So happy for you Miss Squish...rotts are something special. Looking forward to more of his rottie leans.

Hey DOLers, Can anyone give me an idea of some good, caring, take our time, don't recycle the bath water mobile dog washers/groomers? At this stage it is for a good brush out and bath for two scruffy Airedales, too cold for them to be clipped at their ages. But I'd be wanting to know who also does grooming for them when the weather warms up. They live around Kingswood/Mitcham area. Please PM! I don't know who is available, because Dory is easy to take care of., especially when you have kids

I have first attempt crochet jumper. It would probably fit something like a largish whippet. I did it for Dory the back fits her perfect, but I over guesstimated her chest depth and breadth. I'll send it on. And now I know what to do with all my practise pieces!

I struggle with the fact that they believe....or rather, promote to the public their 'nice' belief, because it sounds nicer than the reality they are problably hiding....that the money will help promote responsible pet ownership, education etc. I'm such a cynic, I think they just want the cash to push their own agenda that has nothing truly to do with education, but eradication. Where are the education programs now? I don't seem them going into schools to educate kids or putting together education packages. I see them doing plenty of TV programs that only tell half of the story, the half that makes them look good. I see plenty of individuals and other organisations actively educating children who don't spruik for public donations to fund their efforts and are often self funded.

How do you work and train with an animal you feel no connection with? I've had one dog I had no connection with and only had on a trial. With the breeders help she was rehomed to someone who did feel a connection and she blossomed. I remember feeling resentful towards her, she felt like such a burden. She was a good dog, tried to please, but try as I might she just didn't suit me at all. Just couldn't 'get' each other and we seemed out of synch. Even teaching her the simplest of things just felt like too much hard work.

Question Of What I Guess You Could Call Morals
Dory the Doted One replied to Rach...'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd apply and then worry about whether or not is is truly appropriate if you applicaton goes any further. I've worked at places where I ended up leaving because the morality of those around me was a little challenging to reconcile after awhile. I only lasted as long as I did, because I felt I was making the animals lives better by being there and ensuring SOMEone cared for them. If the place isn't as bad as others, it is still good practical, out in the workforce experience and will make your resume look a little more appealing to other job prospects. So have a go, and see how it sits for as long as it sits right. -
God Love My Daughter. She told me she'd rather live in the car than give up Dory. It took the heat of me a bit, but I really didnt' want to have to test her resolve. Thank God, we didn't have to. But for a moment there it was pretty close. And end result is still paying more than I wanted to and a veerrrrrry tight budget. We'll be having a communal Christmas present this year. I was so stressed I started having blood pressure problems and my doctor was very concerned.
