  1. Dory doesn't like being left behind. We are desensitizing her to that and she is getting better and better in most circumstances. She also doesn't like buses, air compressors (she's pretty good with the oxy welder pop and hiss now), she's not overly keen on thunder, but she doesn't freak out too bad. She's not keen on vacuum cleaners but she suffers through it. Hates...hates....HATES...the BF's van and 4wd. We suspect it started off with his driving and the fact that she gets bounced around when he drives (plus she isn't allowed to sit in the cabin area). She hates it so much, that when I have to borrow the 4wd you can see her get all conflicted between her fear of you leaving and her fear of the car. It's a 50:50 split. In all cases, I try to desensitize and not make a fuss.
  2. I feel like a mean doggie mum. We buy food, vaccinations and that's it. I get free flea and heartworm treatment (although I have to buy the cats) as I'm a vet nurse (and food and vacc's at a reduced charged). I don't buy many treats, she buries them or she gets itchy. Don't buy toys because she doesn't really play with them. She doesn't really need a bed, because she has decided mine is quite comfy and roomy, thanks very much. (I used to find it a lot more roomier. but I have to say, it's much comfier with her snuggled up next to you).
  3. Personally - I've someone felt the need to discipline Dory I would assume one of two things. A) I wasn't paying attention to her and what she was doing. B) They were a D!ck. If it was A) Then depending on what she was doing it would be a fair cop. Although I would prefer that they address me to discipline her rather than they do that themselves. (Unless she was jumping on them, then they can growl at her, but HANDS OFF). If it was B) she most likely wouldn't be near them in the first place. Because if a D!ck were to come to my house, then Dory is outside or in a crate. I take no chances on nothing. If it was one we were to meet on a walk...well she's on a lead anyways and Dory generally doesn't like people to pat her on walks. If it's the Dog Park, she is a dog and person snob and goes near nobody and down the beach she is too busy sniffing and is also very disinterested in people. If she were a puppy and I had kids over. I'd have to say that she would not be mixing with them unless i was present and if she was jumping all over the place like an idiot, she'd be on a lead or in a crate. I would try and get the kids involved in teaching her to sit still and be calm. But it would be a very organised and supervised affair and she would still most likely be on a lead to minmise the risk of silliness. But that is just me.
  4. Oooh...forgot about having to pull out a seeming endless supply of Poo Bags out of my handbag at the check out before I can find my purse. This one happens everytime I have to enter the TARDIS, that is my handbag...why do the Poo Bags always gravitate to the top?
  5. When the Customs Beagle indicated on the liver treats in my handbag. :D
  6. I would've thought that if the hip and elbow data is to be collected for the Breeders own curiosity, then they would pay for the x-rays and scorings (the Breeder that is). I would've thought that as a courtesy, the owners of the dog would pay for the desexing. As far as ownership...I didn't think Pedigree Registrations paperwork constituted ownership in a Law Court (I could be very much mistaken here).
  7. Could it be Subluxating Patellas? Was this checked?
  8. Woo Hoo. Thx to all those involved. My slow cooker recipe collection grows again. I'm beginning to think I might be a bit sad. I have two a Large and a Medium Cooker and I saw a Mini Me (small) in Target the otherday....I nearly bought it, just to compelte the set you understand. ;)
  9. We have Evil Kitty here. Although no piccies. He regularly opens all the kitchen cupboard doors, even the ones I have trouble opening. He hasn't sussed out the kitchen pantry yet...thank goodness.
  10. Not here. Dory will hang around whenever there is food around. She doesn't beg though, well not to me, but she will sit and look all sad eyes at the daughter. She will also guard dirty dishes, empty food packets, bags of unopened food, shopping or any bag that has food or smells like food from the cat (even if it is on the bench or somewhere inaccessible to her). She doesn't get nasty, she just pushes him out of the way.
  11. This makes so much sense and is so sensible, why have I not heard of it before? *makes more than a mental note for such a great idea*
  12. Various fang holes, a chipped tooth, plenty of brusings, scratched eyeball (this one hurt like hell Dr told me it was a pretty serious scratch too. Drops in the eye every hour for 24 hours), mild concussion (that's what happens when you zigged when you should have zagged). I think I've got off pretty lightly! (so far). Stuffed back, but that wasn't any of my animals.
  13. Then I've been going to the wrong breed club/state controlling body meetings. Because you would have been one of the minority at those meetings, Toydog. I'm happy to stand corrected, but I would still like to see a bit more unity.
  14. I wasn't actually talking about pedigree dog owners pointing a finger. I don't have a pedigree dog, but neither is my cross breed broken enough to make a point about crossbreeds also having health issues. I just wondered if there were any cross breed owners who feel that the whole anti purebred dog slander is worth fighting for by actually standing up and levelling the field by bringing forth some of their cross breed experiences. It was a random thought. I personally think that the way to handle all this anti-purebred propaganda is to promote healthy dogs in general. Be they cross breed or otherwise. Singling out one group over another is always going to create division. But that seems to be a sticking point for breeders, they don't want to be seen promoting anything but pedigreed dogs. The reality is, there are plenty of people who do like their Heinz Dogs. And telling them that their choice is not the 'proper' choice is only going to feel like a slap in the face. And no. I'm not promoting cross breed dogs. No I'm not anti purebred dogs. I'm pro healthy, well adjusted, well cared for dogs owned by people who are aware of the responsiblity to said healthy dog. And educated in how to increase their chances of owning such a dog.
  15. I've only owned a few cross breeds and happily they have been relatively healthy my main problem is a few food or grass allergies that are easy to keep under control. Are there any DOL members with crossbreeds with health problems? Maybe they should be emailing the media and telling them their tragic cross breed puppy health disaster stories. Just for a bit more balance. It seems Joe Public loves to hang off the sad stories rather than the happy healthy stories...so lets give them a list of crossbreeds gone wrong. Wouldn't have thought it would be that hard to find some.
  16. Yes, but that lowest common denominator often backs the RSPCA and agrees with everything they say...cos...well...They CARE don't they? They are the RSPCA. So it does matter.
  17. So what will they class as inbreeding? Personally I've never really liked seeing Mother/Son, Father/Daughter matings or Brother/sister, and even Aunt/Nephews, Uncle/Neice is a little close. Are they just going to ban those close ones? Or is it no common dogs in the first 5 generations? And on the topic of that segment...all the problems of that dog and no one mentioned it was OBSESE? PLUS...the hordes of SWFs that have had cherry eye, skin problems....etc.....and so many SWF's are crosses of crosses of crosses that surely we should be seeing a decrease. Let's not even mention that a vast majority of them have crappy bites and dentition...and we won't mention the knees either. It was a slanted piece of journalism for sure, and that's even forgiving the fact that it was a very short segment.
  18. Did I hear the right when they said that RSPCA was making moves to have Inbreeding banned? If this is the case, what is being done to counteract that? They managed to steam roller tail docking, what's going to stop them from this little vendetta?
  19. Dory would be sound like Oliver Twist...*sad sack look, pouty lip* "Ppplleeease Sir, Can I have some more". When she's not doing that, she'd be the typical Teen, "Whateva...", grunted at you. If I had to give her a voice as such...Hmmmmm....I'd say Meg Griffin..."Family Guy".
  20. I wouldn't personally name a dog after another dog, or if I did there would be quite a few years between OR it came to me with the name already. I do know some people that stick with the same name. Childhood friends STILL call their dogs after their very first dog and they always have the same breed. At least I never forget what to call their dog! ETA...My very first dog that was my very very very own, was named after the first family dog who was shared. This was in honour of the first incarnation of the name, cos as a Toddler I LOVED that dog sooooo much and was distraught the day he died. He was even called Roger Dog the 2nd.
  21. That is a Legendary story! Sometimes it is so easy to write them off, so glad that soft hearts prevailed.
