As a complete newbie with much to learn I also want to add my thanks. Watching your inspiration transpire onto film is nothing short of delightful. I also want to extend my thanks to those listed above who dont consider themselves "professional", I am enjoying your work and you not only inspired me to buy a camera but to think I should always aim to try to do better. I now understand the buzz of getting that special photo..totally addictive! ;)

Went for a walk today..... trying to get some pictures of the parrots amongst the fruit trees. Didnt get too far...they were out of my range in the treetops . Instead I took some shots for the challenge. Our native trees are so pretty even in drought conditions. -

JayC beautiful glasses shot, love the color. Lea love the "child" pic, fun shot. MM I love the old shack pic, would make a lovely painting. That spider pic is awesome in detail (shivers) as is the fly. Iltby your pic detail reminds me that spiders are not that scary....(shivers more) I wish you well. :D -

Oh how I wish I had some of those lovely water locations, beach, marina etc. Its so dry everywhere the only place I could find regular water reserve aside from my furkids bowl is the sink. No matter how often I clear those dishes the not so furry kids seem to always find or make more. -
Under my Christmas tree was a d90 with the 55-200mm & 18-55mm lens kit. It is my first real camera....I love it. I am now saving for the 18-300mm lens as I am fussed with changing lenses also.... I have played with a eos450 and 50d, but liked the feel of the nikon. I recommend hands on and for me it was that personal preference that made my mind up. Both camera makes are great...I agree you could do a better price on the d60.

Hi all. I have totally enjoyed all your January posts, and love to sit back and look at all the wonderful pics posted this challenge. You are all so talented. Inspiring. Having just purchased a camera thanks to you all I am enjoying seeing the world from different angles. Iltby your pics remind me of how much we should stop and look at the little things that make the world wonderous. Anyways, im having a go this month... Ok first one: Eyes. This is a pic of my friend's little poodle. I love his eyes, always full of wonder. Next one, same subject, topic: Look up Last one: Tree. Love laying back on a sunny day looking up at the trees moving in the breeze on a warm sunny day. -
Oopsy, one more...a lovely aged gentlemen of a dog. Despite suffering significant hairloss through follicular alopecia he's still a happy one aged 13

Alright then... here are 2 of the pics (of many) that ive been playing with. He is a right cheeky little red poodle boy... The other is him trying to smile for the camera Wow what a learning curve...first decide what camera to get, then try and learn the camera, then get brave enough to go manual. Then there's the edit programs, then there's the saves (and many questions) then I have to learn how to upload them....This week marks one month since I got my new toy. My heads spinning! But im having heaps of fun trying! Thanks all for the help along the way.

Been having some fun in my editing program..Paintshop Pro (im saving for PS) Query..why when I edited a tiff file (thankfully auto preserve is on) the result was an image that looked like embossed tin foil...colors best described as fuel slick on water... What did I do/not do? It has only happened once in 80 edited pics. Any ideas?

Thanks
-
Thanks all for your patience. Ok I have taken note of all your comments. I edited the pics Raw pics through Nikon program. Check. I then edited them as 16bit tiff files. Check. I can then play with them in Paintshop. Yay! As for processing...they are required as jpeg..yes?

Thanks rubiton, I am encouraged! They say never work with children and animals...These dogs are quiet trained dogs. A large percentage of the pictures outdoors had the dogs "squinting". When the proofs were shown the photographer said (and reiterated in email) she said a. I cant help your dog squints when outside... and ..b.you should tell me how you want the dogs to look their best. I guess she thought that provided with a variety of locations, inside/ outside the photographer would decide what environment/best ideas (like collar off) would present best. I guess it is a learning curve, given a limited time one might not be able to settle the subjects suitably and maybe she relied too much on the photographer to make decision what would show the dogs in best light. My friend thought it was only her requirement to handle the dogs, she didnt think it was appropriate to direct the photography session as she assumed the photographers knowledge/sight greater than hers. In relation to editing, does PS recognise nikon RAW and perhaps eventually thats where I should look?

Hey all. This weekend I visited a friend who despite spending $ on a photo shoot for her dogs failed to get any memorable shots...in fact any requested editing (like removing dog tag off collar) were too hard, the photos didnt 'engage' the dogs and in the end the poor focus shots were not the ones requested. I felt so sorry for her. I had lunch with her the other day and shot some pics in RAW format. (nikond90) I selected that as I understand (please correct me if Im wrong) that editing options are improved as opposed to jpeg. I only have PaintshopProx2 which as yet does not recognise my camera raw shots . If I use a nikon program and convert to tif I can edit it in Paintshop. Apparently it does recognises tiff tif and jpeg converted files. So have I defeated the purpose by shooting in raw? Should I have a preference when converting re tiff tif or jpeg? Nikon users (or is that just ruger and me ) any ideas for this newbie?

Here is an example of my day trying out the camera in manual....
-
Ok I got a camera. Check. I am happy to try my hand at basic photo editing. Check. I am trying to learn how to use my camera on manual. Check. One question should I be shooting in jpeg (which I have been doing) or RAW format? I understand that the latter is truer reflection of what the camera obtained(color and light)...is that right?
-
That was most informative Andrew. I believe that may have been the problem. Ill look at the shutter speed adjustments. Thanks. I now fully understand what low describes.......camera is so much smarter than the operator embarrassing but Im determined to learn.

one pic was of a white pelican, the other was of teal ducks (predominately grey background) So sorry I cant load pics for you to see.
-
Looking at the data on the pics the only variance was the f5.3 as opposed to f4.5. The background was the same . The latter shot was preferable. Is there a preferable manual setting commonly used to start from? I am a total newbie, but I am still in love with my d90. Iso was set at 200..it was a very bright sunny day

I figured I might have to post pics, but due to my computer savvy downloading child not being at school Im paying per mb at the mo!
