  1. This is not a diet discussion, but I am sure I would not classify Eukanuba or Hills Science as super premium diets. Also, a lot of people can feed home prepared balanced diets, and a lot on this forum do, though I am not one of them. To the OP, my dog had DM as a puppy. Just one bald spot on the forehead. The vet advised to leave it alone and see how it progresses. He said he wasn't happy advising strong treatment if it wasn't required. Within a month it disappeared by itself. Since then I haven't had any issues.
  2. Both my dogs are fine being handled by the vet. I always ensured that they were used to being touched and handled. Even when i simply pet them, I usually lightly squeze their paws, check between toe nails, clean eyes, check ears, move tail etc etc.
  3. I picked up canned sardines in springwater from Woolworths last week. However, on reading the ingredients, I noticed it contains salt. Is that ok for dogs?
  4. Glad your puppy was so popular However, it is not a good idea to take dogs where dogs are not allowed. I know someone who took their puppy to a beach in a national park where there was fox bait and the puppy died.
  5. How does he get along with your 18 month old dog? Do you plan to leave them both together in the yard? Have you tried leaving them out together for long periods of time while you are at home? How do they react? I won't advise leaving a puppy in a crate for eight hours. At that age, they need to toilet every few hours (at least mine did ).
  6. Can you take your dog for walks in the morning to burn off the energy? That might help them settle down. What breed is your dog? I feed my dogs quite early in the morning. So they are still sleepy. Usually, after breakfast, they lie down on their beds for cuddles and go back to sleep.
  7. My elkhound, who is a stubborn northern breed, was really easy to train. He understood the commands quickly and knew what was required of him. Of course that doesn't mean he did it every time he was asked My goldie just didn't seem to get it initially. It used to take me much longer to get her to understand what was required, but once she got it, she would do it without fail.
  8. Thanks. The website mentions that dogs should not be allowed to drink before and after meals. Do you follow that? I've always let them have access to water at all times, though I do stop my dogs from drinking too much water after playing.
  9. Glad to hear Mistral's ok. Would you all suggest that the moment a dog shows any symptoms such as trying to vomit without throwing up anything, he should be rushed to the vet? Even if the dog is playful afterwards? I am extremely worried about bloat since I have two deep chested dogs. I ensure that there is one hour gap between food and exercise and that they eat slowly. 24 hour vet hospitals are at least 40 mins away from my place. So I'd like to ensure that I 'll get them out in time if required. Also, if a dog is likely to get bloat, how long after meals would it happen?
  10. How old is your dog? I used lots of treats when training my puppies to stay still while grooming. But what worked the best was giving them a message before grooming Now they love being groomed. But it did take a while. Till about five months of age, my elkhound used to try and wriggle away, or run, or do anything but stay still!!!
  11. I have a 14 month old goldie. She still behaves like a puppy What I found different about her was that she required a lot more attention and cuddles than my elkhound (who was quite independent as a puppy). She seemed to thrive on human contact (still does). But as persephone said, a puppy should not get cuddles when it is misbehaving or being fearful. Sometimes that can be quite difficult. The first few days, Genie would whine everytime we left the room. But I gradually increased the time she was left alone. I had taken a week off to settle her, but ensured that I did not spend all my time with her. I also used to carry my elkhound and go on walks to get him used to traffic and people before he was fully vaccinated.
  12. If it makes you feel any better Daisy (who is a beagle) on her first day home took herself off into another part of the house and slept in the corner for hours. No interest in her doggy bed, or being near us or the other dogs, she was very independent knew what she wanted from day one! I know that Siberian Huskies can climatise quite easily and have very good control over their body temperature because of their double coat, and this is definitely true with all Sibes I have ever met - but I have no idea of how applicable that is with Samoyeds! Mish loves swimming any time, and likes to lie in cool areas, but he certainly has never over heated. Samoyeds could be different though!! My elkhound does not like the heat at all. He has a spitz double coat as well, but never likes going out in the sun. He was also independent as a puppy and didn't like too much cuddling. After being with us for a week, he was sleeping alone in his room without a problem. Even now, when we get back from dog park, he gets his special toy and goes to the lower level of the house and spends about half an hour by himself, while we all, including our goldie, stay on the upper main level. However, he does cuddle more now. And because he doesn't do it all the time, it is so special. I love it when he comes and sits next to me with his head on my lap
  13. My dogs used to have soft poos when they were on Eukanuba. Try a grain free diet like Artemis.
  14. Neither of my puppies cried at all. With Odin, my first puppy, the breeders warned that he may not eat the first day and may cry a lot and seem unsettled. Well, we carried him in and put him on the floor. He started playing with us immediately, cuddling, running around, chasing his ball. Then had a proper dinner and promptly went to sleep in his puppy pen right outside our bedroom door Reading all the other threads, I feel terribly lucky.
  15. Very cute puppy I use a Lupi harness to stop pulling. It stays slack most of the time and provides correction only when they pull. I dont see how a harness wouldnt stop puling, i mean what do sled dogs where to help them pull sleds? JMO This is not a sled type harness. It was recommended to me by my dogs' trainer. Lupi works by converting forward motion into an upward lift and so stops pulling. Additionally, it is supposed to be gentle on the spine as well.
  16. When my goldie was spayed, the vet told me that a lump may develop unduer the sutures, which is caused by fluid build up, and not to worry about it. It happened as he advised. She wasn't too active. Slept through most days. The lump disappeared in about two weeks.

  18. Thanks everyone. Tonight my dogs get sardines
  19. Perhaps this is a really dumb question but do you remove the bones before you give sardines to your dogs?
  20. My dogs stay inside. And yes, the water spray can be a bit tricky with my goldie (she loves water), though it works wonders with my elkhound. they usually tend to sleep near our feet when we have dinner. Our policy is that they never ever get scraps from the table or when we are cooking. Their food is separate and is given separately. It was a bit difficult initially. They used to look so cute sitting quietly, waiting for a treat when I cooked meat, that it was difficult not to give in  they still get loads of treats. Just not from human food.
  21. That's normal puppy behaviour. However, you do need to train her to not bite. When my pups used to do that, the yelping trick helped. I would yelp and walk away, and not make any eye contact for a few minutes. Everyone in the household should be taught to do that. You can also use some bitter spray on the furniture to stop her from chewing those. But use that along with training. Whenever you catch her chewing furniture, firmly ask her to leave. Reward her when she stops chewing. Do you put treats in the kongs? You can also give her treat balls to play with. My puppy chewed everything around the house when he was that age. Even put a few holes in the walls  Now, at about 16 months of age, he only grabs a few socks when he is in an especially cheeky mood. But drops it immediately when told to do so
  22. My elkhound, desexed at five months, now 15 months old, never cocks his leg at home and never pees inside. He started doing that at the dog park a few months back. However, he has twice peed on the same person in the dog park. He hasn't done it to anyone else. Why would he do that?
  23. Artemis Maximal is a grain free product. I order it online and it's great because it is delivered home. Lugging around 13 kg bags from pet shops wasn't fun
  24. I use Artemis Maximal too. My dogs are doing well on it.
  25. I did that. Happy to say that now they sit around while we have dinner and never try to get at our food. And they don't get any scraps from our plates, ever!
