I just came home with a Kong for Banjo today and I have a feeling he likes it http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=jDycNYEVNDg

I originally considered moving to my father's house due to the fact that he has a dog himself, but its 45 minutes away from where I live now, and thats 45 minutes away from the city My plans were to move out of home in January-February next year, but I sort of need to get him to hold on until then. Yes his howl is loud and awful, and because I live in a complex, it bounces off the walls of the other houses and projects a long way.

No unfortunately, he doesn't like to fetch. I can leave some music on, I shall try that tomorrow. I Give him a bone every second day just before I leave for work. What I meant by running after it was the idea that he has to roll the ball around to get the treats out of it. He has two different types of rope toys, a tennis ball that he doesn't chase, and the Kong ball. Yeah I have one of those ones, he just doesn't seem to want to bother A friend of mine told me the same thing, but I think I need to find what he really likes first before I hide anything. I got him when he was 5 months, so originally I thought it was just because of him adjusting to the change, but it's been over a month now and he still howls. I believe he was used to the company of another dog and a family that always had someone at home, due to the previous owners being shift workers He howls later on in the day, usually around 3:30-4, just before I get home. I should go out and get a kong toy to stuff, rather than the ball, to see if he will be more interested in that. Haven't tried cream cheese, I used peanut butter because he liked it when I first gave him a little. He seems to love cheese when I drop it on the floor so you could be on to something! Thank you for the help everyone! hopefully I can throw all your helpful advice together and help him to refrain from the howling If anyone else has any other information, feel free to post! the more help I can get the better!

yeah I've been taking him on 30 minute walks, maybe extend it out further? and more running? I usually take him out to the oval around the back of my complex and let him sniff his way to the other end, then call him back so he runs his little legs off, then repeat a couple of times before I walk him home. He doesn't seem to like the kong ball I've stuffed it with everything. dog food, peanut butter, fresh dog bones... everything, he just can't be bothered hah, it's like he's saying "jeepers, I'm not running around just for food" Thanks for the input guys, I'll definitely start the extra exercise tomorrow, keep the info coming though! would be greatly appreciated!

I just lay a nice rug down on the back seat of my car because I have leather seats and find that he slipped around too much. He loves the rug and lays down during most driving if he doesn't have his head out the window and on long drives he even sleeps. I think it's because the rug has my girlfriend and my scent on it so it calms him. Before I put it in he used to absolutely freak out whilst driving, and I'd have to force him into the car. Now he jumps straight up without me saying a word.

Hi there, My 6 month old Samoyed/Husky is putting me in a tight situation at the moment. When everyone in the house leaves for work during the day, my baby boy Banjo howls due to loneliness/boredom. Today I had a complaint from a person in the complex that we live in. If she files a formal complaint she could get us into trouble. is there any way to get him to stop the habit? I have thought of: --- This is not possible because: Another dog --- There isn't enough room in my backyard for another. Move out from home --- I can't afford to, and I plan on going to university next year so definitely not. Move to my father's house --- He has a dog, but his house is too far away from work, friends and my girlfriend. Give away my dog --- Are you kidding? he's made me so happy there is no way I'd want to get rid of him. If anyone has any tips or tricks to get him to stop it would be really appreciated, thank you

Thanks for the detailed response PF I was wondering also whether he will be alright on his own at nights. I've heard that Samoyed's and Husky's can get depressed if they are an only dog and left on their own for lengthy periods of time (ie: work). I plan on getting another dog when I move into a house with my girlfriend, but this won't happen until December-January. how do you think he will cope sleeping and spending the middle of the day on his own?

Hi there! I picked up my 5 month old Samoyed around 5 days ago and have some questions about changing some of the habits he's picked up from the last owners. 1. since I've had him, we have had to try and sleep through howling and crying. Does anyone know how long it will take for him to adjust to living with a different family? 2. He gets upset when everyone is inside and he is out. We let him in at night time until we all go to bed. I think the last owners always had someone at home giving him attention and keeping him indoors a majority of the time. he also had another dog to play with, but here I think he must get very lonely when there is no one to play with him. I take him for an hour walk in the morning and a 1 hour walk with another hour at the doggy park in the afternoon, Is this enough exercise for him? and do you think he will adjust to living outside more? 3. The first day I took him to the doggy park, he was scared of any and every dog that got close to him, he hid in between the bin and the fence and wouldn't move until i put him back on his leash. then as I got him to the middle of the park and let him off the leash again, he stuck like glue to the back of my legs and wouldn't move, too frightened to socialise. After a couple more visits, he is now starting to walk up to other dogs and sniff them out, but he remains extremely cautious and won't act playful towards the other dogs. Do you think that with regular visits and socialising with other dogs he will start to fit in and play? I may have more questions but those are the main ones I can think of right now, so any help to a first time dog owner would be appreciated.
