  1. Fynesse - My old boss in Sydney is great with Chiro stuff. PM me if you want his details. He worked wonders on my old kelpie,
  2. If anyone goes to Sydney, I can highly recommend Anthony at ActiVet Carlingford. I worked for him until a person issue arose - he was amazing!
  3. I only want to put her on puppy food as she is going to be a big girl. i want to give her the best start I can even though my budget is really tight (I recently lost my job). I wasn't intending on keeping Priya, but my friend is adopting her mother and we really need a working dog.
  4. I looked at that one, but for the amount of weight the bag holds its a out of my price range. I've really gotta be cost effective until I can get more hours. Once money is a bit more free I'll switch to that one or something similar
  5. Long story short, I may be keeping a puppy from a litter I have here at the moment. Pup is a border collie cross Kelpie. Currently been fed Dogpro puppy food. Currently looking into a more cost effective diet for her and just looking for ideas. I was considering feeding beef mince (uncooked) with dogpro puppy food until she is twelve months old, then switching her to an adult food with the mince. I have financial constraints atm so I can't afford to be feeding her to top range food, but I want to feed her something cost effective but good for her. My other dogs are on dogpro adult and are doing great on it so far (recently changed to it) and our oldest dog is on homecooked diet (he is my mums dog) This pup will be trained as a worker (hopefully) to replace our older dog who has to be retired due to medical issues (not PTS, just retired). I asked my co-workers, but they all feed hills food (which is fine if you can afford it, but I work one to two days a week and will be studying fulltime as well soon) Is there anyone who feeds mixed who can share any pointers? Thanks
  6. My farrier lost his beloved border collie girl with a similar type of thing a few months ago. Still have never found out what killed her. Lab results were inconclusive. *hugs*
  7. It would depend on what set me off about that person. If there is something I don't like about them, they don't get my puppy. I made the mistake once and it nearly cost the dog her life. She went off to a home that ticked the boxes, but there was something about them that I couldn't put my finger on that I didn't like. Long story short, she left to die. A kind soul found her and got her help and with the help of some brilliant rescue people she came home, rehabiliated with me and lived until a brain tumour killed her. I currently have 3 puppies that I will be starting to home in a month, and I guarantee i'll be as fussy as all hell with where they go.
  8. My 3 week old BC x Kelpie pups weigh almost 2kg so IMO it depends on the pups upbringing and their health.
  9. Vote Here Please vote for us Abby and Smooch would really like to win
  10. Its scary when more and more get sick. I went out to check my horses rug tonight and he has a runny nose, naturally I started panicking, but there is no bats in this area atm thank goodness!

  12. In 1994 Vic Rails and 13 horses died of unknown causes. All animals on the property was tested (horse, cats, dogs birds etc) no results found. Then the search was spread to wildlife. It is now policy that all animals on a quarantined property be tested. There is also a similar bug going around with SYMPTOMS of Hendra but is a longer effecting bug and with antibiotics goes away, we had a couple of scares through work a few months ago. Very scary.
  13. According to the seminar, they ran trials where they had infected bats in cages above different species of animal, and the horse was the only one infected. As for the culling, they tried it near a school somewhere that built near a bat colony (for fears of lyssa virus) and once they started a cull, they had an outbreak. Unfortunately, we may have started this by moving into their habitats and destroying it. If we take precautions, thats a good thing, no sense panicking yet.
  14. WnH - Honestly wasn't worth going to. We left early as it turned into a mud slinging contest All that was said was stuff we already knew.
  15. Another thing mentioned last night is that beginning a cull on bats will increase the risk of Hendra. Put something under stress, and it's more susceptible to disease. That rule applies here. It's a scary thing, but I think animal owners just have to be sensible. No one knows yet if other animals will be intermediate hosts. If you know or even suspect there are bats around, leave them alone, do not try to scare them away. Make sure your pets feed and water are not in the areas under trees etc. Last nights DPI meeting turned into a s***storm basically as people are panicking and abusing the bat expert, the two Department of Primary Industries vets and anyone who basically talked. I can understand being concerned. I went as a horse owner foremost, vet nurse secondary. But there is still so much not known yet about this disease that I think we need to be vigilant but not panic just yet. Biggest problem is that the virus sheds up to 3 days before symptoms occur. Death (in the horses) is usually in 48 hours, but can be anywhere up to 4 days. Biggest threat with Hendra is from June to October as it is around the bat birthing season (also can be earlier due to weather etc - ie fruit trees blossoming etc = higher risk of Hendra outbreak) Unfortunately, this disease is going to be here no matter what happens. Just a thing I want to mention to any horse owners here (I know most of us are dog owners but there are some of us horse people ) If you have a case of suspected Hendra, DPI is recommending removing the HEALTHY horses away from the sick and calling your vet ASAP. It is spread via touching secretions ie horse has runny nose, other horses sniffs face. DPI do not want people trying to move a possible infected horse if at all possible, mainly for human protection. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share what was said at the seminar last night Stay safe
  16. I went to a seminar tonight on Hendra. The horse who 'recovered' had to be PTS as it was a carrier, it survived yes, but was still a risk to everyone else. I'd say its the same for the dog too ETA There is also a vaccine in the works.
  17. Atua - Frontline original isn't new lol, it's their original product before adding the tick component in.
  18. Greyhound vet here recommends it to all our pet greyhound owners.
  19. I don;t get your way of thinking. If the area you live in is " high parvo, as you say, then the dogs immunity would be challenged due to living there. Once you vaccinate and the dog develops immunity, you can't give it additional immunity by injecting it every year. The dog either has it or it doesn't. I don't yet trust the three year vacc. We vaccinated (through one of my workplaces) a few dogs and later that year they got mild parvo. Coincidence or not, I will not change to a vaccine I cannot trust fully. ETA - if it turns out my dog has an immune disorder, I think it would be better to vacc yearly than every three years IMHO. But thats just me.
  20. Only once did we have supply issues at my other workplace, I think it was on back order for three days due to weather preventing a truck getting to our supplier. I'd be changing vet if they stuffed me around like that.
  21. Mine all get c5 vaccinations, I've never had an issue with it (considering one dog gets sick at the drop of a hat I've been happily surprised!) and would continue with my current vaccination protocol. I considered moving to the three year vacc but this area gets parvo severely and I don't want to risk it. I could get titre testing done, but if someone came back with low results and needed revaccinating, I wouldn't be able to afford both (I generally only work 3 days a week). I think the only wrong thing in vaccinations is to not vaccinate ever. Do what you feel is right for your pet.
