Do You Refer To Yourself As Your Dog's Mum/dad?
Dame Aussie replied to RubyStar's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep, we're Mummy and Daddy, "There's your Mummy" Daddy's home!" and the like have them running to the door :) My Mum is Nanna, they know who Nanna is too, if I tell them she is coming over. :D I don't really call them my kids though. They're "the hounds". -
I voted no. I wouldn't expect people to touch an unknown child in the street, they shouldn't touch other people dogs either. I'm sick of having to make allowances for other peoples stupidity.

So sorry Huntia

Ours are in the back seat with harnesses that clip into the seatbelt holder. They're very good in the car though and just sit in the back anyway.

Our Apricot tree was hectic this year and Mosley was loving it, we were regularly finding half eaten apricots or apricot seeds on the couch or the rug in the lounge -
Would You Take Your Pup To The Vet On A Leash?!
Dame Aussie replied to Cavamum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most puppy classes require vaccination certs anyway so it's fairly safe to say that pups going to classes are. Vaccinated, even today the average agility and obed class request vaccination certs just to make sure there's no one carrying anything potentially around A vaccinated dog can still carry diseases in. We can carry them on our shoes. Do you disinfect your shoes and clothes before touching your pup at home??? I think it is good to exercise some caution, but I think some people tend to go over the top, often to the detriment of the socialisation of the pup. While parvo is horrible, the risk of getting it from a vet clinic or puppy school is minimal. Vets have strict disinfection and isolation protocols for any infectious disease, are cleaned at least twice daily (often more) with strong disinfectants and its not like they leave faces, vomit or other bodily fluids lying around in the waiting room. Usually suspected kennel cough/parvo/cat flu cases are asked to wait outside and if they do come in, the waiting room and any areas the animal has been in (consult rooms, treatment rooms etc) are thoroughly disinfected. Exactly, anything on the floor of the clinic is on your shoes anyway. -

Everything and anything. Mosley has a penchant for bananas though, say "nana" to him and he starts drooling -
Would You Take Your Pup To The Vet On A Leash?!
Dame Aussie replied to Cavamum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, that's usually the case. But shouldn't you also be pointing out that pups are not fully covered until about week 14, after their second vaccination, but are being admitted to puppy school as young as eight weeks. Yep, I guess that is the risk though, socialisation vs illness ect. My girl was out and about seeing the world at 9wks and went to puppy school. Now she is in juvenile classes at 20wks and they did ask to see her vacc record. We were just discussing this in the gsd thread. It seems in many places the norm is just the 2 vaccs, here it has always been 3. I got the 16wk one done as well as KC as there was a recent outbreak with the local vet seeing at least 2 cases a day My girl too. But she was my first dog in decades and I was in here like a flash to get help, because the Vet was taking dogs as young as eight weeks for puppy school. The consensus is still the same, much to-ing and fro-ing between safe and risky. I was left with the same conclusion, risk versus socialisation. The turning point for me was the vouchsafe that the dogs would not be in the clinic but in an adjoining building where dogs/animals were not taken. Anyway we went socialising all over the area, not that she needed it. Atypical temperament for a Maremma, she was born dog friendly and people friendly. That was seven years ago, almost to the day, and the practice or discussion really hasn't moved on at all. Px OT.... but she is GORGEOUS! -
Was that noise your dog??? That's freakin hilarious

Puppy Zoomies Are The Cutest
Dame Aussie replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Bahaha! I love zoomies!! -
All of my dogs will carry one like that when people arrive, put your hand over my fence and you will more than likely be bitten. They're not living tormented lives Maybe I haven't read the thread properly, and for that I aplogise and will go back through it. But all I have gleaned is that the dogs barks and growls when people arrive. He was barking at something he saw as a threat near his back yard and his owner came along behind him, startled him and picked him up. His tooth got caught and a snap turned in to a tearing of skin. Dog has not ever bitten before and happily lives with a child. i'm sorry, I am all for euthing aggressive dogs but he has no history of biting, sure he is a territorial little turd but so are loads of dogs. The dog is safely contained within his home and not a menace to the general public. The owner seems astute enough to realise that the dog must be locked away when she has visitors. Totally agree

runs off to google the breed... Nice looking dogs! What are they like as a family pet? Not for anybody, they can be barkers but are very protective, loyal and silly. They need regular exercise but get tired quickly, well mine does anyway  They aren't great at obedience as they are very independent but Mosley knows sit, lay down and shake and that suits us :) Not the best choice for suburbia as they are quite loud, but as you have a bit of land I think it would be great! Great with kids, again very protective and affectionate. Can be destructive though so keep that in mind.

Would You Take Your Pup To The Vet On A Leash?!
Dame Aussie replied to Cavamum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Scaremongering anyone??! I think while precautions should be taken with animals, especially young ones, telling people to not go to the vet unless it is an emergency is ridiculous. Parvo is horrible yes, it can stay around in the ground for years and can even be spread by bird droppings, so with that in mind should all puppies be kept in a bubble??? There will always be a risk of infection to puppies, but being so terrified that the dog can't even be taken to a vet is detrimental to the dogs health in the long run anyway. Just be sensible. -
Yeah I believe we do expect too much at times. For that reason I would never have a dog PTS because it defended itself against rough handling or anything that caused it pain. Just heard on the news that a family dog has scalped a 4 year old and the child is fighting for life. Breed at this time unknown. How can anyone afford to take the risk whether the dog was defending itself or not. I was under the impression we were referring to a dog maybe snapping at a child who caused a dog pain, not a dog mauling a child severely. In my mind there's a difference. The OP stated that the dog is aggressive, so one could easily graduate from snapping to more if that way way inclined. I mean, how much leeway do we allow? The OP states that it is aggressive, in her rather biased opinion. From what was described it could easily have been bad handling and judgement on the owners part. We will never know. Exactly, picking a dog up and holding it near ones face while it is going off is a very dangerous thing to do, I'm not excusing the behaviour but I feel there are a lot of considerations to be taken into account in any instance of aggression. It's not always black and white I guess is all I'm saying.

OT but that middle picture in your sig is hilarious, he looks drunk

Pet Plan Insurance - A Question
Dame Aussie replied to Jordan Windebank's topic in General Dog Discussion
This is how I read it yes, if you choose yes you are taking that option to pay the fixed excess (whatever that is) and a quarter of the costs. The premium is lower because you are paying that extra 25%. -
"come Home" Vibes Please For My Lost Dog.
Dame Aussie replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
I only just saw this! So glad she's home safe Fran, naughty girl! My two got out once through some gates someone didn't shut properly, they were gone about ten minutes and when they came back they looked like they'd run a marathon I could just imagine them galloping down the street like idiots -

Oooh good question, I would imagine that if you got the dog as a pup and raised him/her around the pigs they should be ok, I don't have personal experience with the breed though so could be wrong! Hopefully someone with more experience can help. Oh and I second a vote for piggy piccies!! :D
