  1. They are banning the American Pit Bull Terrier, and now have extended that to Pit Bull types, which means if you have an Amstaff without papers and they decide it's a pit bull type, you're in trouble.
  2. dont be a goose, Mags . She's a dog. I make the little runt walk. How very dare you!! Poor Pancake
  3. Yes, it's funny how a lot of people with kids make comments about how people without kids are "selfish". The only reasons to ever have a child are selfish, while there are several reason for not having kids that aren't selfish. Such as caring for the environment. People who have kids usually have them because they like kids, because they WANT kids, because they have an urge to have kids (biological clock), to pass on their family name, to please their parents, to have an heir, to have someone to take care of them when they are old, to see how their genes turn out etc. And all of the reasons are selfish. No one ever has kids just because they wanted another human on the planet to experience how great life is, which is the only unselfish reason I can think of, and one I have never heard anyone mention when asked why they had kids. Great post fuzzy
  4. To you yes, to a lot of people who only ever hear about them no. I came across sooooo many people who wouldn't have had a clue when I was working in a shelter. Not to mention the huge amount of people who think anything with bull in the name is a pit bull.
  5. Personally, I think this is a snobbish and ambiguous part of the code of ethics. I also think the attitude that often goes along with it is a major reason that pedigree registrations are falling and designer dogs are increasing in popularity. People want a good healthy dog, with predictable temperament and look. Not many want a show dog, and a lot of the people who think they want a show dog go to one show and decide it's not for them. You can rationalise most anything under the rubric of 'improving the quality and/or working ability of the breed'. For a lap dog, being a good pet may equate to being a good working dog! Try and breed away from extreme conformation for health reasons and avoid popular sires . . . say so openly, and you'll be in for a lot of criticism. Agree with this.
  6. Whippet   ETA: I have considered fostering, maybe that would help me pick and also unpick certain breeds! I've told the OH who loves anything huge, that I want a Pug. Can't say he looked too impressed  He will love a pug... they are TRUELY big dogs in a little dog body! tough as nails and full of additude My girl will pull all the pointers into line when they are bad... she was very helpful when raising the babies  That's what I told him, every one I've met has been hilarious  I know he'll fall in love if we get one!

  10. This is a bit of a whinge but I feel like there are so many breeds I want to own, but not enough time!!! I can't even narrow down a top ten!! How many dogs can a person have in their lifetime do you think? How many have you had? Give me some hope!! Anyone else have the same dilemma?!
  11. I know!! She's gorgeous, I want a ball bopping Whippet!! Even the ordinary Whippets are a lot of fun to own. :) Don't tempt me TW!! I have met quite a few Whippets lately and each one makes me want one more and more! Surrender   Will Deshonko Kennels be having any Whippet litters in the future? I hear they're the best!
  12. I've told the OH that we will be getting either a Greyhound or a Whippet one day......now just to choose which one
  13. I know!! She's gorgeous, I want a ball bopping Whippet!! Even the ordinary Whippets are a lot of fun to own. :) Don't tempt me TW!! I have met quite a few Whippets lately and each one makes me want one more and more!
  14. . perhaps even the lying down/getting up has a discomfort factor to it ? has she been Xrayed for HD or elbow dysplasia ? a good behaviourist,IMO will observe them walking her , and assess things/refer to someone/help owners learn required skills if needed..not just say 'she doesn't know what to do ' I agree here, I think they should check her out and make sure everything is ok health wise. Tug and playing in the yard isn't really enough exercise/stimulation either and I'm not surprised she's a bit all over the place, I would bet she would be a bit less clingy/scattered if she was getting regular exercise out of the yard.
  15. Do you know what training they are doing with her? If she isn't getting any kind of mental stimulation she might be restless and behaving like you have described. How much exercise does she get?
  16. .... but maybe they are following socialisation programs that *produce* excellent companion dogs? I do - and my breed was developed as a companion breed in any case, so it is one of the main criteria I use when selecting breeding animals - ie: does this animal have the innate temperament to produce a stable, confident, affectionate companion? I get a bit narky when people are disparaging of registered breeders who happily refer to breeding companion dogs - I mean, seriously: what the hell else are most breeds of dogs if not companions and family members??? Have to agree here, of course breeders should be trying to better the breed, but what's wrong with breeding happy, healthy animals for pet homes? It can come across as snobbery (in general, not in reference to anything here)and part of the reason a lot of people don't think they can get a dog from a registered breeder, so go to a byb instead.
  17. Def Ridgie in there, she's a big solid girl for her age!!
  18. I know!! She's gorgeous, I want a ball bopping Whippet!!
  19. Ours don't watch TV but I used to have a cat that loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it was all she would watch, if it came on there she'd be, on the couch sitting up straight staring at the TV  I think it was all the movement.
  20. Fair enough, I can see what you mean. I hope whatever happens she ends up with someone compatible.
  21. I see where you're coming from megan, but it seems the dog has no issues, only the owners. She follows them around and licks......is that really reason enough to give up and rehome? I'm not judging, I actually hope they rehome the dog as obviously it's not the right one for them, but really, how many people get a dog that behaves exactly as they expected with NO unwanted behaviours?
