I Know Someone Has To Do It...
Dame Aussie replied to a topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Interesting to look at the rest of the life of a bloke who'd behave like that. Callous brutality towards animals tends to go along with callousness to humans. While a less brutal means of despatch is used in most shelters & pounds, there's been documented adverse affects on staff who have to contribute to it. Yes, even when the rational response is that the animal is being sent to 'peace'. The fact that so many of the animals are intrinsically healthy and fine in temperament....can have a corrosive emotional effect on people within the normal range. UQ reported that mental health issues, like post traumatic stress, goes along with it. Their conclusion was that high rate of PTS of such animals is not just an animal welfare problem, it's also a human mental health issue. Wouldn't surprise me at all mita. I never did anything like that when I was working in the industry but even knowing it's going on around you is soul destroying. I completely burnt out. -
Yes I'd take her to the vet if it's gotten that much bigger.

Argh! Adorable! Congrats!

Where I used to work there were a few long termers, but otherwise a high turnover. They don't like it, but someone's got to do it and they find ways to cope. I couldn't do it. I struggled even seeing it or knowing it was going on and had to leave in the end. But yes, it is true that for some of the animals it is a blessing. -
Yes, especially if there have been strangers in & out & much banging. Guess she is leaving its my house warnings. How about staying out with her until she goes & then giving her her a treat & praise, just temporarily until all is back to normal. Yep, I agree with this too.

I'd just be keeping the dogs inside unless I was there to supervise them.
-
Agree with this. Being so little she could squeeze or dig out of the tiniest opening.

Love the first pic  Needle teeth

How ridiculous. Dog poo being spread throughout stores is obviously a malicious act and not due to people walking their dogs in the CBD. Should we ban people next time there's some vandalism? *Mega rollie eye man*
-
Agree with this. All those things come down to training rather than the breed.
-
Yeah, not a good idea at all.....
-
That is terrible OP I really hope you get some help and good legal advice. Also definitely let Troy know if the breeder is advertising on DOL. All the best with it.

Sounds like it's all going well :) Along with playing with her paws it's a good idea to play with her mouth also, so you can look at her gums etc if needed and have her used to that. I second more pics! :D

I wouldn't freak out too much either, I know my dogs will sometimes cringe at things or act frightened of things, and they've never been hurt/hit with anything in their life. If it gets worse maybe look into it, but I wouldn't think her doing that once means there is necessarily a problem.

That's what I was thinking, if they do the assessment then isn't the process what they say it is?
-
Wow, you learn something new every day! I thought that would have been too old.

I actually don't know, but I can't see it being a good idea! Will watch with interest.....

Keeping Dog Entertained During The Day

Sure is, gave me some new cheap ideas, thanks for posting it! -
A nice wine coloured BC??

Managed to get an appointment today, vet thinks its just like a cat with a fur ball, not surprising as my Anatolian is dropping his coat at the moment and it's ridiculous. Heart sounds good, no fluid or anything and she thinks she'll be fine :) Thanks for all the opinions/advice :) Probably over the top but $60 isnt too much to put my mind at ease

I know SL and I know I can be quite over the top which is why I like to get other peoples opinions. A big part is the what if, what if I don't overreact and there really was something wrong... Frustrating!

So sorry to hear this dancinbcs Sounds like there was nothing you could have done. That's what scared me as it seems sometimes these things can have little to no symptoms at all, very scary.

Thanks guys, this only happens once in a while, say once a month or so. I'll still get her checked out though. Thank you

First of all I'll preface this by saying I am a complete hypochondriac when it comes to my dogs. I'm wondering when coughing becomes something to be concerned about. We had some people over last night and Lili (4yr old Australian Shepherd) had a little coughing fit. It went for all of a few minutes and was just like a very mild kind of kennel cough sound with a gag at the end. Friend told me it could be a sign of heart disease or heartworm which sent me into freak out mode. So I'm wondering when a little occasional cough becomes something to be worried about? She occasionally does this, but I've always just figured she had an itchy throat or something but now I'm worried. Should I be rushing her down the vet?? She is perfectly healthy in all other ways, gets monthly heartworm treatment, is happy and interested and active. Im going to take her to the vet anyway on Wednesday to make sure but just wanted to get some opinions. Thanks guys! :)
