Yeah, I don't pay too much attention to best before unless it's fresh food ie: dairy/meat etc. We used to own a deli and took anything out of date home, never had anything that was actually "off". For dried treats like Schmackos, I'd feed them. The hounds in my house have iron guts though

Yeah I thought maybe a bite of some kind, poor little mite. Hope he is feeling better now.

So you would be happy to see the less popular pet breeds become extinct? To preserve the breed someone has to breed enough dogs to carry one a viable gene pool. With breeds that have very large litters of say 12 or more, what are you going to do with the puppies if no one will buy them as pets? In nature large numbers like that would never survive anyway. Culling puppies at birth is much more ethical than raising more puppies than you can find good homes for. Personally, I couldn't do it and I have a popular breed so it isn't an issue but I would never condemn those that love their chosen breed and feel they have no other option with the best interest of the future of that breed in mind. Well, if the only way to keep a breed going is to breed with the intention of culling multiple puppies in the process, then yes I'm afraid I would prefer to see them become extinct.

Doesn't sit well with me at all. People culling puppies they don't have homes for just so they can keep one for themself? Especially when breeding puppies that they know may have to be culled, that doesn't sound ethical to me, at least in my definition of the word. Does the end really justify the means?

I don't believe in dominance theories, IMO it's just a natural instinct and an enjoyable behaviour for them which is why they do it. She's pretty young too. None of mine hump people but if they did, I guess I'd treat it the same way I would biting or something similar, say "No" and ignore. There's trainers here who would probably have better ideas though

Most pedigree dogs are around the $1k mark anyway aren't they?? Plenty of people will pay that.

I worked in a pound for over 3 years and the most aggressive dogs I saw were a couple of GSD's and a Maltese. I saw co-workers get bitten by dogs, the worst bites I saw were from a Lab and a Mastiff cross. I never witnessed anyone being bitten, or even hassled, by a bull breed... Bull breeds and their crosses were probably the most common dog to come in as strays, and yet they were also one of the easiest breeds to deal with, other than the "Staffy scream" in their pens Sure, some were a bit reactive with other dogs, but no more than any other breed we got in there including JRT's, Maltese, Kelpies and lots more. I have only been bnitten by one dog in my life, a little Terrier mix, my OH has been bitten once by a Weimeraner. We live in a pretty low socio-economic area and have a lot of Pit Bulls around, I have met many and every single one has been an angel and more than happy to socialise with my dogs. I guess what I'm getting at is whilst bull breeds might have a propensity to be DA, other breeds can too, and IME bull breeds have been one of the more reliable and trustworthy dogs, especially around children. If the breed were not restricted in the first place, breeders could be breeding away from DA even moreso, but the Government has created a self fulfilling prophecy by banning them, it sends the breeding underground and TBH, I wouldn't trust the temparement of ANY dog bred by some moron in secret. I don't think it's fair to blame this on the breed itself, when what we have done as a community has forced it into the black market.

I got an Amstaff -
This is my view as well. The difficult part of the whole situation with pit bulls is that sure we should blame deed not breed, but when APBT are a banned breed, then those that are bred are more likely to be poor examples of the breed or crossbred, and like any breed that is poorly bred or crossbred, the reliability of temperament then goes out the window. That combined with the type of people most likely to be interested in a breed that is banned, and the level of care and training put into them, leads to poor outcomes for the dog, breed and community. And there in lies a major problem for the APBT, the fact they are banned only makes the breedings more difficult, go underground, unable to show for confirmation, sport, schutzhund or whatever.. there is no platform for the breed to improve because legislation is preventing the improvement of the breed as a whole, compounding the issue. If there was all of these outlets available to legitimate breeders then surely the breed would benefit...? Even though i don't agree with what some breeders are doing with the amstaff (i.e huge 40kg+ dogs) but atleast they're aiming for temperement. Exactly, if they were legal to breed, responsible breeders would be breeding better dogs for people to own. Rather then underhanded dodgy BYBs out to make a buck.
-
I hate the term Bull Breed because people think it includes Bulldogs and Bullmastiffs at times, who have completely different temperaments to the "Bull" Terrier breeds that include SBT, Amstaff, Pitbulls and the actual Bull Terriers as well as crosses of these breeds. Yep I agree. That's the problem with BSL. Bull breed can mean pretty much anything depending on who's saying it.

That's interesting, that is exactly what Lili does, she almost pretends the vet isn't even there and just puts up with it till she's allowed to leave
-
Yes, anything with bull in the name is a bull breed but normally when people say bull breed they are referring to SBT, Amstaff, APBT, English Bull Terrier. At least in my experience anyway. If people are referring to a Bulldog or a Bullmastiff they will normally say so, bull breed seems to normally be the breeds I mentioned above and crosses of similar breeds.

I've had a couple of vets comment on the fact that my Aussie is very shy when she is at the vets. They're right, she is. She isn't interesetd in getting attention or pats from them, she will let them do whatever they need to, but she just doesn't like it, and I don't blame her. When she's at home with people she knows she is the biggest cuddle bug you've ever seen and a complete clown. I wouldn't worry too much, some dogs are more reserved than others, but if you are worried, contact the names Persephone gave you above, they will be able to help :)
