  1. I'd love to let my dog have free range in the backyard when no one is home. Unfortunately I can't given she is a serial escape artist and is storm phobic. So I have to put her in her roofed concrete floored kennel run so I know when I come home she is there (unless there has been a huge storm and she has managed to rip the door off the hinges and pull the chain link off the side gate to get out again ). I guess what I am saying is that if all you saw was my dog in her kennel run for a large portion of the day in her run without knowing the situation you could come to the conclusion that I don't have the time for my dog. --Lhok
  2. From what I have read on Akita World on facebook it would seem the Japanese Akita Inus are more dog aggressive and more of a challenge to own then the American Akita. --Lhok
  3. Norfolk/Norwich terriers would be ok in an apartment but they are quite rare. --Lhok
  4. From my limited knowledge, pig hunting is mostly done on private property. To do so in a state forest you require a permit and (I'm not 100% on this) need to be a professional shooter. Pig hunting is dangerous and to do it safely you do need dogs, anyone who is serious about it trains their dogs to bail and hold the pig they also can call the dog off the hunt and pig at any time. As with everything it's the people who have little regard for anything apart from themselves that ruin things for others. --Lhok
  5. The way the guy acted when interviewed on Sunrise reminded me of this series I have been watching on youtube about people with large powerful dogs in the UK Here is the link to it if anyone would like to watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6jIJz93J28 editing to add that the series is pretty confronting in some parts --Lhok
  6. In regards to the "cross bred" American Akita, due to the second world war all Akitas were cross bred to German Shepherds. They did this to try and prevent the breed from being wiped out due to the military taking dogs to make linings for uniforms as only German Shepherds were exempt. When the war was over and under American administration Akitas were bred with anything to sell to the Americans as people were incredibly poor and the Americans would pay quite a bit of money for one. They took these dogs back to the states then the American Kennel Club wouldn't allow Japanese imported dogs to be registered after a time and so now there is the American Akita. The Japanese Akita was refined back to the dog they had originally but the funny thing is they don't allow the pinto coat which has been in the Akita since before the war as there is texts that depict it. --Lhok
  7. Then that is gross and I wouldn't blame them for wanting to ban them it is always the bad/lazy ones that ruin it for the rest --Lhok
  8. Could the dog poo through out the shops and streets also have been put there in order to get this put through? Or are dog owners really that lazy that they can't pick it up? --Lhok
  9. Well I made a list of the breeds suggested here and gave it to them. I have also included looking at Rescue but they were a little funny about that. I'll update it when they get back to me. Thanks for all the suggestions :) --Lhok
  10. Some of the breeds that have come up over the conversation have been Berners,Dachshunds,Chows and even a Greyhound. These are dogs that they seem to like the look of. It's a mixed bunch which is why I am at a loss to suggest something. I know whatever they do go with will be looked after very well. They have tried some of the pet selector website but that brought up bully breeds which is by my understanding something that they don't want. --Lhok
  11. As the title says I need some help suggesting breeds that would fit this criteria for a family member. Medium to large Easy going Something that doesn't care if it misses a day of walking People orientated They don't care about shedding as they are ok with grooming and they aren't house proud they also have children too. The dog will go to obedience training but they aren't looking to do dog sports. --Lhok
  12. As a spectator turning up to a show and being lost and confused then missing the breeds that I had went to see. I'm getting so good at it no one wants to come to shows with me anymore  --Lhok
  13. Found this article via the Akita world facebook page My link --Lhok
  14. I've nicknamed my 10 month old daughter the Labrador as whenever I have food no matter where I am she comes over and looks up at me and the food with pleading eyes. If I ignore her she pushes closer and watches the food while I am eating it. I have also caught myself calling her name and when she responded and headed over to me I have said in a high happy tone "Oh what a clever girl you are". Oh and the other time I got all confused between "bubby" and "puppy". I'm not crazy I am just sleep deprived  --Lhok
  15. Is it compulsory desexing of animals sold by the pound or any animal that goes through the pound? --Lhok
  16. I'm sure Espinay can tell you lots more on the Pyrs but from my research Pyr's are prone to barking especially at night and they are also prone to escaping so good fencing is a must and you can never trust them off leash in areas where there is no fencing either. They can be droolers but depends on the lines. Hopefully Espinay will come in and talk about them more :D I love Pyrs --Lhok
  17. Favourite: Anything Spitz Least favourite: Anything that drools excessively, if I need to take a towel with me to wipe my arm and pants after a game of fetch then it isn't for me. --Lhok
  18. As a bit of a dog nerd (like most of us here ) I do get a kick out of recognising a not so common breed, the owners are always so chuffed :) I do too I was at a dog show and walked up to a lady and asked "May I pat your lagotto?" she replied with "No he isn't a labra.. Sorry, Yes he is a Lagotto and you can pat him all you like" --Lhok
  19. Alpha_bet I understand what you are saying but this directly copied from the proposed paper that the RSPCA is pushing RSPCA Australia believes that all people who wish to engage in breeding dogs should be required to register as a dog breeder with their local government. The application of this requirement should be broad and apply to any person who wishes to keep one or more entire dogs regardless of whether that person has a stated intention to engage in breeding. So is it a case of saying one thing and doing another or have I completely misinterpreted what that is saying. --Lhok
  20. I read it that you have to apply for a breeding licence to own an entire dog not sure what the go would be if the vets decided for health reasons that they won't desex your dog until after 6months. --Lhok
  21. That number six is a bit troublesome. They can sell your dogs if they think the dogs would be at risk going back to you? Who makes that decision? and what if you win the court case do they go and get your dogs back if they have already on sold them? I'm trying to wrap my head around all this as one day I would like to become a breeder eventually but I can't really make sense of it. Will I need to have concrete floors and the dogs in kennel runs away from the house and the like? How do breeders get the permission to breed on the average suburban block? It probably is all in the paper but I am missing it Can someone help me make sense of it? --Lhok Editing to add I just read that if your bitch produces an offspring that has a problem behaviourally or physically that you are obligated to exclude them from the breeding program what exactly do they mean by that? If your bitch produces a pup that has a malformation you have never seen and it is a one off you have to desex the bitch?
  22. Another update Bloods came back clear for liver and kidneys, they also said that she has a low neutrophil count. Not quite sure what that means and stupid me forgot to ask as I was relieved that it came back clear. Not quite sure why she is drinking lots of water though so I have to keep my eye on it and if anything else changes to let them know. --Lhok
  23. Back from the vet Managed to get a sample today, it didn't show up anything too concerning so they have taken some blood to get that checked out and to rule out anything. --Lhok
