I wonder where the blame would lie if attacks someone? --Lhok

I used to tether my dogs to the tie down attachment in the wagon we own. Short enough that they can only sit/stand/liedown but not be able to move around in the boot space i.e walk around. If I had another car I would be looking to secure them to the child safety attachment in all modern cars. --Lhok

Oh I missed the first bit. Although I would question why she said owners unless she has already signed him over? It is really hard to follow what they say. --Lhok

I really hope this isn't true "SAVE HUGO Hugo is coming home to his owners" --Lhok

I hope not, if the reports are to be believed and he escapes out on farmland he will be a dead dog if a farmer catches him. --Lhok

Coffs Coast hinterland area NSW It will be even worse after all this rain too. Be aware that we also have Lyme disease in the area as well. --Lhok

That's a stunning looking dog! When they scream you might want ear protection though :p --Lhok

I suprised a lady at a dog show once, I was walking around when I saw her and her lagotto. I said to her what a lovely lagotto and she looked up at me and said "No he isn't a labra.. wait what? yes yes he is a lagotto! would you like to pat him" Made my day to get to meet him and the lady as well as she told me quite a bit about the breed. However she did look quite frazzled so she must get "Is that a (insert randomoodle here)" a fair bit. --Lhok

One whole year has gone past it still doesn't seem fair, You and I were suppose to be off doing awesome things together like exploring the beach, playing silly games in the backyard with my children, helping me gain independence and being able to go out by myself and just being a constant companion for me so I wouldn't feel so alone in the world but instead I have you in a small box with a metal plate engraved with your name on my mantle piece. I'm sorry I didn't come in here on the actual day of your passing but it's still so raw for me. I only had such a small time with you but you stamped a large piece of my heart the day you came. I miss you little man. --Love Lhok It's interesting the night I chose to write this there is a large thunderstorm happening as I type.

Anyone who knows Akitas will tell you that they don't show many signs outwardly of pain, they are so stoic, so just because the dog is running after a ball and showing no signs of pain doesn't mean they aren't in pain. --Lhok

For a breeder not to have be a puppy farm that could continuely run an ad in the paper for weeks on months that stated that there were always pups available and transport wasn't an issue I would be wondering how that could be. This ad was in a Coffs Harbour newspaper and it was from the Gympie Sandown Mally breeder. There has been people saying that they don't have purebred pups that their pups are actually mally x white shepherds and long lists of health problems. ABR have had run ins with them in the past too. --Lhok

Hijack away trifecta, don't have a problem with it. I sent ABR some new photos, don't know if they are their page yet. Not having much luck with breeders but I will keep trying Nope they aren't on the page at the moment, but they might be busy. Thank you for doing everything you can for this girl. --Lhok

Do you have a link to her? I'll see if anyone can help her out within the akita peoples, we have had 4 so far in the pounds just this week. No idea why this is happening Editing to add: Found the link and have posted it up on the FB group. Will be hoping to talk to some people to try and get her some help. --Lhok

There isn't any specific Akita rescue although there are some rescues that do take them from time to time so that is a little worrying. Any reason as to why they won't let her be adopted? I know I wasn't there but having a great dane jump on her and her growling wouldn't be something I would be overly concerned about especially if the great dane was also female as they are prone to not really liking the same sex. --Lhok One of the temporary Local Law Officers claims that 75% of the dog incidences he is called out for involve an Akita (I have my opinion on that but it won't be stated here), and that they are aggressive dogs. He claims they are dangerous and I agree they can be if they belong to the wrong owner, but then again so can almost any dog. He said his opinion of the breed was based on his experience with them. Originally he said the dog would only be released back to the owner, however he has let me try to find breed specific rescue for her. I doubt the owner will claim the dog which is why I am trying to find breed specific (or close to) rescue for her. I don't know about the girl's history but will try and find out. The volunteer that had her out yesterday said Sooky responded well to her but I'm still worried about her future. Oh that doesn't sound good on the part of the ranger.. Bit odd considering there really isn't all that many of them to begin with. ABR have her up on their facebook page today looking for people to either adopt her outright or foster care her, but after what has been said about akitas by the ranger I doubt any one will be able to adopt her straightout. I wish I was in a better position I would start my own Akita centric rescue or at least start up a donations bank account to help with them. --Lhok

The dog in the Canberra pound is known to Akita people, in fact the circumstances surrounding him being there have caused quite a blow up. --Lhok

There is Arctic Breed Rescue that takes them sometimes if they have room. There is also an Akita Breed Club in Vic that might be able to help too. --Lhok

One thing I can see which would be a problem with the oil is if your dog lives in a high paralysis tick area and also an area where they go swimming very often (i.e everyday) it would be problematic to know that your dog is covered by the oil all the time because I would assume that the oil isn't water fast. I live in such an area and I wouldn't be trusting my dog's life to an oil infusion without some pretty strong back up from peer reviewed papers. It is enough for me that from working in a vet clinic and seeing dogs come in with life threatening tick paralysis related problems and knowing the owners use the available products (advantix etc) and also where checking for ticks that makes me think otherwise. --Lhok

Labrador: Cushings, Addisons And An Itchy Belly
Lhok replied to Kerry C's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Treb displayed these things after he had been through something stressful which is something else that Addison's dogs do. They don't produce enough cortisol so when they get stressed their body doesn't cope with it. When Treb was first diagnosed I went looking for things that would help me understand what Addison's was this was one of the best articles I found that explained what was the difference types were. http://www.addisondogs.com/addisons/helpers/small/difference.html --Lhok -
Labrador: Cushings, Addisons And An Itchy Belly
Lhok replied to Kerry C's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The distended belly is more a Cushings thing then an Addison's thing. The ACTH test is the only test that is able to diagnose Addison's but it can't tell you which type of Addison's your dog has, For Addison's you will need to run Electrolyte tests every few weeks once they start on their meds which once they get a dose that evens them out then it is every three months. The itchyness is a bit of a worry but it could be something she is eating or a contact allergy I never noticed any real itchyness with my boy Treble before, after and while we were getting the meds sorted. His Addison's symptoms were depression, legarthy, lack of eating, drinking excessively and urinating excessively. In fact before he was tested I thought he displaying signs of kidney failure, only a full blood test and the ACTH test confirmed Addison's. --Lhok -
I was very glad that Treble was crate trained by his breeder, as when he had his nosebleed and had to be super confined (couldn't put his head down or up or he would bleed) the crate was the best thing to keep him in. Also the vets remarked on how quiet and happy he was to be in a crate compared to other dogs they have as it made it easier for them to keep an eye on him and he didn't try to rush/push out of his crate when they had to change his bedding and the like. --Lhok

None of the vets here do day boarding unless you are dropping your dogs off for surgery. As far as I am aware there aren't any places that do doggy daycare here either. There are boarding kennels but trying to get in sept/oct unless you are outside the school holidays will be tough. Ticks are all year round, and there is mozzies and sandflies too, so maybe heartworm stuff might be something to consider if your dogs aren't on it. As for pet friendly accom, not sure if there are any places that will let you take your pets inside but there are pet friendly places mostly caravan parks. None of which you could leave your dogs unattended. Dog friendly off leash places there are the beaches and a large off leash park. --Lhok

My Akita who has skin issues has been going great guns on the Earthborn Holistic the grain free ones, I haven't tried coastal catch but he seems to love the primitive and the meadow feast. Not sure about it for a bullmastiff though the kibble size for the primitive is kinda on the smallish size whereas the meadow feast is in the middle. http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/international/dog_formulas/ --Lhok
