  1. She seems to be getting better, the swelling is going down and it no longer leaks. Dr Chris will see her Tues week and see if it has dissapated by then. If not, it may end up needing surgery, but we hope not. She's never had a problem before, and I never see any swelling there (I'm not exactly sure where they are, so I'll google that, but I have a fair idea), so I'm hoping this is a one off. It came up quite fast, and burst the night she went to Dr Chris. Ick - just as well I had plenty of incontinence pads for the bed and her bed. AnnieK, how did you manage to inflate her weight when you quoted me? Don't think I didn't notice!
  2. Wonderful to hear things are looking up for Reg. Thanks for updating us.
  3. Noticed a swelling next to Bianca's anus, with a small ulcer/sore on it. Panicked (of course) and rang the vet, who luckily was still there and would wait (thanks Chris - man of infinite patience and rolling eyes). Anyway, the diagnosis is (hopefully) abcessed anal gland. So antibiotics and anti inflammatories, and a follow up visit in 10 days. I don't want to think what else it could be if it doesn't respond. Not sure where this has come from. She gets chicken frames every day, and raw meat and kibble. I wouldn't say her poos are firm, but she doesn't have runny very often, mostly just soft (probably since starting her on fish oil capsules). She used to be a bit constipated at times, but now I'm not sure if the soft is a better option. ETA: She was weighed at 34.2kg, down from her last weighing at 35.5. So to everyone commenting on her weight (you know who you are!) (just kidding)
  4. If it were mine, I'd probably have a couple of pallets covered with something allowing drainage for the dog to stand on b/c my back isn't the best. Sister's back is perfectly fine, so she doesn't have any problems, and the setup is so good that it only takes her a few minutes to wash the dogs anyway. Hers is out on her decked back verandah - the water goes thru the deck, and, b/c the house is built on a bit of a slope, probably ends up on the lawn anyway. She has an old table outside the laundry door that she puts the shampoo/towels etc on. That table also gets used at BBQ time for salads etc. Nice to have plenty of room for that stuff. My dog gets washed in the shower (we have a hand held with a mixer tap), but the shower is a little small, so she has to bend in the middle a bit . She's OK tho - suprised the heck out of me last time; she just walked straight in as if to say, "Oh hell, let's get it over with."
  5. I would be handing the owner the mop! Whilst accidents can happen, I'm mortified on the rare occasions a dog of mine makes a mess. I ASK for the mop.
  6. Mark Singer is a fantastic behaviourist and I highly recommend him. I have used his services and I know a few other DOLers have also done this with great success. Mark came highly recommended by many others when I was seeking a behaviourist and he was more than happy to spend time talking to me on the phone before I booked with him during which he figured out what the problem was straight away, just by asking a few questions. This is a link to his website and all prices are listed so you know what you're up for before you even call him. http://www.caninetraining.com.au/ Thanks for that. I read a bit on his website; sounds interesting. Have sent link to son.
  7. Thanks everyone. I'll send the link to this thread to him. I'm sure there'll be something to suit. I tend to agree that a general class may not be the idea. I think the issue needs to be addressed first. Aside from that, she's a lovely dog, and son has already done a lot of training with her. She was originally a rescue, and, I would imagine, had never left her back yard. She wasn't even lead trained. Now she's going well on the lead, does basic commands, including waiting at the door until she's invited out. Also lets go of her toys on command. Son is doing pretty well for his first "alone" dog (ie not the family pet), but we need to get this problem addressed, and I think it is a job for a professional.
  8. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good trainer and vet in Adelaide, preferably SE suburbs at least for vet (they're in Myrtle Bank) for son's dog? He and his girlfriend have moved back to Adelaide *sniff* and they're not impressed with the vet they went to the other day. Apparently the reception staff were not the friendliest, and the vet didn't do a very thorough examination or weigh the dog. Not that there was a problem, but for a first visit, he thought they'd be a bit more thorough. I don't know who they went to. Anyway, any suggestions welcome. They'll also need a behaviourist b/c the dog has issues with other dogs approaching her whilst she's on lead. She can get pretty nasty, and it needs to be addressed. She's OK when off lead, and with dogs she knows, but otherwise it can be a big problem. Thanks everyone. ETA: I'm sure they'd travel a bit if there's a REALLY good vet somewhere else

    Greyhound

Most greys should get along with other dogs fine. My dog regularly mixes with my sister's two rotties, and the grey is the queen of the lot. She has the pick of the beds, the pick of the bones, you name it! The rotties think she's marvelous. If you adopt thru GAP, they'll pick a dog for you that likes other big dogs. When you apply, they ask you about your family, your other pets etc, so that they can find a dog that will fit in with your circumstances. For example, b/c I have an elderly parent, my dog had to be very calm, so that's what I got. If I had older children, I might have preferred a dog with a more playful nature. BTW GAP dogs are temprament tested to accept other dogs. They have to pass this test in order to go thru the adoption process. Those that fail cannot be put up for adoption.
  10. I just don't use it. Really, the tub does nothing that washing the dogs standing on the grass can't do. I've been looking at buying a hydrobath for months now, just haven't yet. I was ready to buy from the Barf shop, but got annoyed with the B/S they told me over the phone. Sister was thinking of getting a hydrobath for her two rotties, but she thought the cost was ridiculous, and would have had to wheel it around. In the end, she got the plumber to put a hot/cold water tap on the outside of her house (outside the laundry in her case), and attached a short length of hose with a trigger shower head. It's fabulous b/c you get clean water all the time. She just ties the dogs to the house or the table outside, wets them down, shampoos them up, then rinses off.
  11. My aunt had a pekinese that would suck on a baby's dummy. If you didn't watch her, my young niece would "share" her dummy with the dog A few seconds each, then swap; erk. This was discouraged - the dog had her own supply eventually, and she was limited to those.
  12. Awwww to Frodo. Your picture is great too Fru Fru. Bianca cuddles her toys, but doesn't suckle them. However when she's asleep, she puts her tongue out, hollows it and makes little sucking noises like she's suckling from her dam.
  13. Yes, thought of that, but didn't want it killed again for being in the wrong forum list. I've got cream, but I think it might be off. Damn. Does blue cheese go with scones? It's very creamy. Blue cheese IN the scones would be yummo! blue cheese is gross No one answered me about blue mozerella on pizza - OH & I are still alive in case anyone cares Sorry, probably caught up in the drama. Sounds nice... was it?

Blue cheese IN the scones would be yummo! blue cheese is gross This one (shadows of blue) is really nice. It is very creamy and mild - a bit like a blue brie, but slightly tangy-er (sp). I suppose it would be OK on savoury scones??? Anyway, I didn't have any scones (or crackers either) so licked it off the knife. A REALLY nice recipe (not that I know it, but I've eaten it) is blue cheese and leek tart - a bit like a quiche with leeks and blue cheese - you can't taste the mould.

  17. Not in QLD Well, 9pm for all the bananabenders.
  18. Milk....sugar...???? anyone have some scones...??? ooooh, scones with raspberry jam and cream! Oo, no, not at 10pm at night
  19. Did someone come back from the nightclub early? It's only 10pm
  20. Damn, you really missed out! Actually, after page 2 it pretty well descended into what everyone was doing/eating. Yes, time to put the kettle on, the cricket's nearly finished.
  21. I don't think this is correct either, I think it has been suggested that she have her dog desexed to stop it from getting out again and she has opted for that to happen, but AAPS can't just take in a dog and desex it before doing it's mandatory time, I think that is illegal. No, it wasn't her dog. She turned the dog into the shelter after she found it. She was told this is what would happen before it was released to its owners. She would not have been suprised if it had been before she adopted it (if that was to happen; now it won't), but was suprised that the owners also had to have the dog desexed before release.
  22. I don't know - that is what she was told. She didn't have a problem with it (and if she'd adopted it, would have had him desexed anyway), but wondered what would happen if her own entire rotty escaped. This topic is interesting, and I'll tell her about the fact of being registered previously as entire. Her dogs have always been registered correctly, and she's very careful about preventing escape, but I suppose accidents can happen.
  23. Sister found a GR and turned it in to Keysborough Animal Shelter. She followed up (b/c she would have adopted it if the owners weren't found), and found out that the dog will be desexed even if the owners are the ones that claim it.
  24. Rest peacefully Abbey. Hugs to you Rozzie. As a past owner of snagger dogs, I know their magic ways too. 20 years is incredible. You will be missed Abbey.
