One of the most important concepts I think for a trainer to keep in mind is that learning (dogs', ours', everybody's) is in a constant state of flux. If a particular learned behaviour's reinforcement history isn't strong (as in many reinforcements, or very good reinforcements) and recent, then there's a pretty good chance that it won't happen when it is asked for. So the training is never finished - it's always a work in progress. Which I think is lovely - it makes me very happy that my old and not very well dog continues to delight me with his ability and love of learning. Hi WalandLibby, it's great going to obedience school and seeing dogs that have been going for so many years and still enjoying themselves and learning new tricks. Does your doggy know many cool tricks?

Hi TrinaJ, do you get plain yoghurt or flavoured? Just get the natural (plain) she loves it if its Paul's but refuses to eat anything if its the European one. Oh great I'll get some tomorrow thanx.

Alot of trainers are suggesting a male pup and desex once we're ready. Something about 2 bitches having issues, but I hope it all comes down to personality rather than gender. As my sibe pup is so playful, easy and submissive but you can't really know until she's around another dog 24/7. May be a different story, as we've only been interacting her with other dogs once a week and when friend's come around with their dogs.

Hi Fevah, You are like the unique name registry lovit. Thank you and I didn't realise bob marley had so many children with cool names! Hi nksyd, I love Alfie but reminds me of the movie played by Jude Law and I dislike his image at the moment LOL. Oh and I sent you a message. Thank u also. Hi Roxy Lady, thank you for your contribution. And love Malakye and your right it does suit a mala or sibe. Tank is awesome too. Aah but look out, ever since that book came out there has been a massive increase of young dogs I've met called Marley! Which is like Diesel - when we got him, people thought it was an unusual name. Now there are tons of Diesels everywhere. Only cool dogs get the name though What about Bass? (pronounced base, not bass as in Bass Strait) I love that name, it popped into my head when I was helping name a friend's new bullmastiff x girl the other week. They ended up calling her Mia though. Hi ell&diesel, I know what your saying Diesel is popular hence your pup but it's so cool like Vin Diesel and he is rockin. . Marley yes a friend of mine said the same thing when I suggested it. Bass aka base is nice and different first I've heard of it. But I suppose names suit different breeds and personalities also. Thank you for your contribution.

Hi Littlebear, great list especially Jensen and Mitre 10 LOL that is so hot. Max Power awesome name, and it's from THE SIMPSON'S episode when homer changes his name and gets treated a lot better and welcomed into high society. I used to go for melbourne demons so was thinking DEMON was a cool name or MARLEY?

Still reseaching the best breed, breeders etc alot to do before choosing the right one. So just looking at names. Do you think Maximus is too long as in syllables? I like long names but people say stick to shorter ones so they remember faster. What do you think? You'll end up calling it Max. I called Axle - Axe, Lily - Lil, Gizmo - Giz. LOL my thoughts exactly!
-
Yeah I'm trying to get the quote thing also. I'd love to use a 3 syllable name for the next one but people tell me it's better shorter. My pup now is 3 syllables and she's fine. Great name too Molly.

Hi everyone, :D I'd like to ask everyone to jot down one or more suggestions for their favourite names for a male puppy. 1. 2. 3. etc. I'm thinking something uncommon not heard often & named by many. Some names I'm thinking of are... 1. Corben 2. Diesel 3. Maxim 4. Lucas 5. Dallas 6. Rogue 7. Kobe - I already have a sibe named SAYURI which is Japanese so maybe another? 8. Armi 9. Jett 10. Duffar - that is my husband's dream name for a boy dog think it suits his future goofy pup. Ofcourse I love the Max, Rockies etc but so many of them already at my obedience school they all look at up you like hmppppf "who she talking to, you or me?" Thank you everyone for taking the time and hot suggestions.

I think every pup and adult dog has diferent tastes and preference for dry food brands. One person recommend this brand to me at the vet and I got it first feeding ate it all and loved it second feeding snubbed if off and sat on her mat, waiting for something better to come along. I know alternate with 2 different brands, raw meat plus meat log. Go figure.

Hi Aimee, at obedience training they get asked that question alot and they usually answer with - small dog, collar and lead and big dogs like mine a 9 month old sibe a harness and lead is best. Sibe's are infamous for escaping their collars I experienced that once at obedience training chasing her in front of 40 dogs and owners. So went straight to the pet shop and got a harness and complete 360, she's a different sibe! But started with a collar and lead when she was your pups age only just now using a harness. Get her used to a collar and walk around the house with a lead so she know's what the restriction is. No one bite me or anything but we are learning this right now, walking your dog without pulling. So here it goes. * Get her attention, maybe bring some treats in a bum bag or something, and let her know you are just as fascinating and enjoyable as the doggy poo on the grass out there. Walk, loose lead good, tight lead bad, bad. Pulling you into the direction she wants means she is walking you not the other way round. * She pulls stop shorten the lead to your chest. Wait for her to sit down and if she does look at you reward her, praise her. May even want to turn the other direction when you start walking. She tightens the lead stop again. You don't have to give her any treats if you want. * Training not to pull is a working lesson, many many trips with constant stopping. In the beginning you will be stopping more than walking so if you are like me, not very patient try walking in the backyard or in the house first. To her you stopping is ruining her fun and no longer exciting. Give it a go and try not to cave in to her cuteness. I'm still teaching mine not to pull and it frustrates the hell out of me. But she's learning. Eventually she'll learn that's the same ol boring spot we walk everyday, JK. LOL. Good luck.

Hi Zhenjie, I sometimes still have the exact problem. I can't remember the last time my 9 month old sibe pup eat just dries. But I started pouring milk into it beginning with formulated puppy milk, progressing to cowes milk if she can stomache it then when you know she's fine doesn't get the runs then add that till the dries are submerged and start to moisten. I tried beating eggs also - she loves that all the protein, chicken soup, tuna, sardines, torn up slice of bread with some mince or canned dog food/ meat log. Make sure you mix it thorough so the dries aren't poking out where she can see them. Also cheese, pasta, left over spaghetti sauce, gravy, and now lastly beginning a regular raw meat from dog food section I think it's kangaroo meat, with dries but completely covered she loves crunching them. Try to add small amounts of dries introducing them as a garnish as oppose to basis. I think they just get bored of eating the same thing, considering when she's surrounded by human food which has alot of flavour, salt, sugar etc then they get a smell or taste for it. Mix it around everyday, everyday is different. Mondays - raw meat with a little dries, Tuesdays - sliced up meat log, Wednesdays - canned tuna, dries, Thursdays - cut up sausages with eggs, dries and cheese, and so on etc. Just like us they may get sick of eating the same everyday, I love spaghetti but to have it 3 days in a row and more I'd rather go without and have an apple. Keep us dated with how it goes and good luck.

Great information Erny thank you. ;)

I think all owners must be interested in training their pups or adult dogs as they learn very fast what they're allowed to do and what not. She may be an angel now but take her outside or around another dog and she may not be listening to you and obeying your commands. Pups require training every week if possible daily to reassert the commands and imprint into their brains. I was like you boasting about my 9 week old so obedient and learnt so many commands and even tricks but once she was out of her regular environment and setting she went nuts, playing with people, jumping, running non stop and chasing other dogs. Now in obedience training she still requires more work, maybe for many years. Alot of the people at the clubs have been training their dogs for 4 years. Another thing with pup sitting on your lap wanting your food is she may acquire a taste for human food and not eat dog food at all and become a picky eater telling you what she wants not what you want to give her. But good luck I'm using the clicker too I got it from obedience school for only $5.50 but there were cheaper ones from $2.00. ;)

Hi paganman, with the dog being x bred the malamute part of him is a nomad and at any opportunity will keep on running and not look back. I found a manufacturer from the US who is selling it for US$239.00 and I think postage is free for purchasers over 150.00. Here's a link if you wanted to find out more. http://www.gundogsupply.com/g3.html I may have to get one too if she still runs off. Hope it helps. Cheers ;)

Kick a warm, sleepy puppy outside at 4-5 in the morning in winter? Another vote for a crate beside your bed. I have a 13 week old here who, since 9 weeks old has slept right through (from 10.30pm-8am onwards). Absolutely not who is that cruel to leave a puppy out in winter, the question is referring to when her partner gets up at 7am to let the puppy out not the first time it gets up. I actually know a lot of people who find it acceptable to sleep a 14+ week old puppy outside (in winter no less), provided they have shelter and a warm kennel. My vet tells me under these circumstances it should be fine, my puppy school instructor echoes these sentiments and several others at my puppy class and various friends have placed their puppies outside in a kennel from the day they got them. Hence, I'm surprised to hear people reacting so negatively over the concept here. At what age do you all believe dogs can be placed in a kennel outside or are people of belief that they should sleep indoors for life? Please note, once again I'm merely asking a question- please refrain from any vitriolic responses. A kennel could not be warm unless you heated it. Its been 2 deg overnight in Melbourne lately. I would be horrified if a pup I breed was outside at the moment. I do not know much about the schnauser breed but I breed cavs. I believe they should be inside with unlimited access to outside. How far inside is a personal thing. Mine sleep on the bed. A friend has them in the laundry with a door. Our laundry is outside so not suitable. I could leave mine in the kitchen as that is were the door goes into. As to permanently outside I say never as I come from a family that has always had inside dogs. They do get shut out in the day time on occasions. Hi Bilbo Baggins, I too love having my husky on the bed. But do you have fur problems? I at times find myself waking up with fur stuck between my eyelashes and poking into my eyes and it has become a habit now. What do you do to prevent this?
-
Hmmmm sounds like a real problem alot of dogs don't like anyone touching them but their owners. So sorry I don't have that problem thank goodness but good luck finding a resolution. :p

Everyone says they're puppies thats why they bite but when my SAYURI was 8 weeks onwards she would nip everyone and they thought it was so cute and naughty, but I was the only one who thought it was wrong and could lead to a disastrous habit or behaviour later on as she got bigger and told gave her a sturdy no and would turn my back or leave her alone. She realised she got no play from me and I warned everyone else to use the same response resulting in many games stopped and backs turned. She eventually realised what no meant and stopped. So if you're willing to trust and wait for them to grow out of it then each to their own but if like me you are worried with a nipping habit and growing big dog may spell trouble oneday then try discipline them early on. GOOD LUCK!!!! and keep us with progress please would love to her your results.

Hi PomsNZ, yes that is not something you want as she gets older and might mistakenly bite someone. But does she like going for walks with the lead or has it deter from going for walks?

WOW I full heartedly feel for you as I went through that with my now 9 month old baby, and boy did I learn the hard way. We didn't have a crate, nor kennel, only a room say the size of a bathroom with a filled water dispenser bottle nearby, a bed with blanket, her favourite plush squeaky toys and newspaper laid on the floor. I previously lived where I worked and started from 5:40am and throughout the day and night till 11pm. So i took her out on the lawn at every opportunity but for secruity placed newspapers. Most of the time she would relieve herself on the newspaper which covered the entire floor and for some strange reason would poop in her bed, and she would go sleep somewhere clean. That infuriated me. After 3 months my husband built a pen outside in the garage with a larger floor space and we only laid a small area for newspapers and she did her business there. When we move to a new house at age 5 months she finally had access to the lawns all day and night whenever she pleased and no more newspapers. But as winter came the room she slept in was partially open to the backyard so had cold air circulating all the time, we put her to sleep inside the spare room. Now being inside most of the time she lets me know when to let her out by standing at the door and growling. What I've learned now without any secruity of newspapers is not to have water in the same area where she sleeps, only give her access if she's had some treat which needs washing down or playing/ exercising late at night and you have to let her drink. But usually she doesn't drink after 9pm and we take her out to the lawn every hour up till we put her to bed around 10-11pm. If I'm still awake and decide to go to the bathroom I will take her with me and let her go also. She won't need to go until my husband gets up at 6am for work then she sleeps inside even up till 11.30 or 1pm without a toilet break. She can holder longer as shes gotten older thank gosh. I've found unless she walks past her water bowl and drinks it allow her but if she doesn't don't leave it next her while she is sleeping or intends to. You must so many sleepless nights when your constantly taking her out but I couldn't do it anymore especially work all day and night so newspaper was the best choice for me and no food after their dinner time or extra water after 8-9pm. Only if she hasn't been working herself into a sweat even just playing rough for awhile will need water. Please remember we've been through this and survived so hang in there and I hope you find a way for your baby and you as each case - individual is different. GOOD LUCK!!!
