  1. Really? I've never heard that before, I thought any command as long as it's in English is acceptable in the trial ring as per ANKC rules (and even that is at the discretion of the judge). OK - I haven't trialled for a while but, I was always taught that "drop" was the only acceptable command in Victoria - different states have different rules ANKC rules are Australia wide. You can say "apple" to mean down and the judge can't penalise you. As long as your word is ONE word and in English (or another language pre-approved by the judge) then you can use whatever. It can happen, wuffles  Try setting your dog up for example for the distance control and get someone to stand with you and say all your commands to try and catch them out  My dogs know both down and drop. My word of choice is drop, but sometimes I say down when training with others who use that word My dogs don't care!
  2. I can't as i.ve said I will meet my friend from work at Quinn's Beach it's not going to be all that warm on Sunday which is why I have no swimming planned lol Not sure about up north but it was pretty darned hot yesterday! We went swimming. After buying some beach gear and getting into the beach spirit, I might even take a trip down again tomorrow after work to the bit amypie pointed out. I still prefer the bit we met up as a DOL group, but this bit had a bit of a bay so if I go after work on a weekday it should be less busy and have it to myself :) Though having it to myself isn't the best probably, bit scary!
  3. I tried Ruby on the bodyboard this morning. She was happy to put 2 paws on it but that was it. I'm surprised she even did that
  4. My inspirational trainer is more local, and doesn't produce training DVD's (though she should!!) Mine is DOL's very own Ptolomy. I used to sit in my car after obedience classes as a noob watching her work her red kids and I was in awe. I aspire to get my dogs working just like that. We're not there yet, but thanks to her we are getting there :) DOL's bedazzledx2 and caffy are also awesome to watch and very inspirational. I've got plenty of training DVD's but get more of my training hints from them. Thanks girls
  5. CC, I'll add to the list of dogs you can use for company if you want to head down, as I am now beach addicted after last week and would love company more often. As you saw, mine didn't really bother with other dogs at all (except when Mason and Gibbs ran up to them when we arrived  OMG IT'S MORE LABS!!! they must be thinking ) If anyone wants awesome deals on beach gear, sign up to the Anaconda adventure club (free to join online or in store) and they currently have 70% off beach gear for members. Today I picked up the following for about $39 - beach umbrella, sun shade (which can double as a great crate shade for shows, it would fit 2 crates under it very nicely with lots of air flow!), canvas zip up beach bag, massive beach towel, and bodyboard. I might head back again next week and pick up another beach towel and beach bag, and take a longer look at other things on sale as my time was limited this arvo. Love a good bargain!
  6. Yep went through the troll phase, too. Had the normal sized ones and the ones that went on the end of your pencil! Oh and marbles, too! Welcome Hawksdale! :)
  7. Illegal? How so? Had mine in year 6 I think. Used to upset me when I got sick of them and left them to die. You could hear it dying even when I tried hiding in and muffling the sound!
  8. The most technological thing we had in class was a scientific calculator, and a Tamagotchi we used to sneak in because they were all the rage back then
  9. Come visit me I have three spare air conditioned rooms going to waste  No you don't - don't go stealing a potential housemate RV, I have a spare room that has its own ducted aircon vent ;)
  10. Does anyone want to visit Kwinana beach one afternoon next week with me? After really wanting to go tonight but leaving it too late to decide, I've decided a sunset swim would be lovely so am seeking out some company! Sounds a bit like a lonely hearts advert.... A Friday preferable but can do another day if that fits better :)
  11. I'm glad I bought a house that already had aircon! My next house I am aiming for aircon + pool! While out walking tonight, we went through a lot of walkways between streets near where I used to live as a kid, and I could hear people splashing in pools all over the place or just the hum of pool filters. So jealous!
  12. Mine too Your ES is gorgeous! Sucker for an ES :D I took mine out for a walk tonight about 7pm. We walked to the park, I let them run around a bit, then we walked for another half hour at a fast pace. We got home and they huffed and puffed for about an hour  I thought maybe I shouldn't walk them so far/fast on a hot evening, but they pull up fine! What?! No she hasn't!!!!
  13. Using a clicker doesn't automatically make someone a "purely positive trainer". It's just one of many training tools that doesn't have to be used exclusively
  14. If it's just the two of us BBQing, maybe we should save it for a day that more want to join us and BBQ, too? As you say, long way to come for a swim and would be worthwhile with more of us sticking around for barbie. I'm free for BBQ beach party this Sunday anyone :p
  15. There's a Straya Day flag inflatable thong at Big W - should I get it? :D
  16. Bloody oath!! A few of us are heading back at 9am Sunday if you (or anyone else) wanna join us wow that looks precariously placed! but awesome! Strewth!! I reckon! I hope you guys ate it before it got knocked onto the floor!
  17. I'm sorry to read this Hoping he turns up safe and well soon
  18. Good point about BBQ's. I'd be content just with a morning swim, what do you reckon, MG? We could BBQ another time perhaps. I should be home Straya Day morning making the salads I said I would Bring on the vodka jelly, though!!! I've never had one before so I'm a little excited
  19. I don't advise actually going into the city to watch the fireworks. There are plenty of great watching places outside of the city and you can be home in a jiffy! I was driving home from a friend's place on the north side a couple of years back on Oz Day, and the fireworks started while I was on Tonkin Hwy. There were cars parked on the side of the road and watching the fireworks from there. I was heading in the opposite direction to them so couldn't watch and drive, but turned my head at the lights and saw it was actually a great spot. Something to think about
  20. Just to add, this is an AM thing. Hopefully meet 9ish? and then have an early BBQ lunch So everyone has their afternoon/evening free to spend "Straya Day" at the fireworks or with family or whatever!
