Retrieving & Field Training Talk
RubyStar replied to RubyStar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
So pleased with Ruby, she finished her 3rd trial in a row today -
Congrats Banjo on the JDX pass!!! And Jasper is just too cute :D Back from the retrieving trial at Mogumber. So pleased with Ruby, she finished her 3rd trial in a row We got 2nd place (but only out of 4 starters, 2 actually finished the trial), but I'm just pleased she's finishing trials that placings are the least of my worries! She tends to bite down on the birdies a little bit when she's excited so we lost a few points on that a bit today, so LOTS to work on including encouraging that soft mouth she's supposedly meant to have

Wish you had put your hand up earlier...... Have just weighed i-squeak - 4010 grams and he will be 6 weeks old on MOnday. Little Porker If I hadn't been so foolish as to take on uni while working, I would have been very tempted to you! Things happen for a reason I keep telling myself, and I'm sure the dog that is meant to fall in my lap whether I'm truly ready or not will do so one day! Because if I wait to be ready, it will never happen! Wowzer, i-squeak you little chomp chomp!!

If blonde girl's home falls through, just putting it out there that I'll find room at the inn for her :D Somehow I don't think your mum wants to part with her! :p

Don't need to ask me twice :D *checks trialling calendar* After tomorrow there is no retrieving on until July so I'm free as a bird to come puppy smuggle cuddle again I got some cute photos today on my iphone. And just saw the stacked pics on facebook, yup, I think we did good! Girl 2 stacked nicely, or is it that we just happened to capture a good pic with her before moving P.S. Toller babies come a veeeeerrrry close second to labbie babies in the cuteness stakes :D Very cute indeed!!! And I taught i-squeak and blondie to hold a dumbell today, how clever are we

I don't really have a camera, except for my iphone. But if Ptolomy lets me, I'll be sure to snap a few on the iphone as all it has on there are a gazillion Lab photos, so it needs a bit more variety Hope you feel better soon, CC. And little Indy as well, poor thing!

Retrieving & Field Training Talk

Sorry TSD, forgot to comment. I read your posts on the runs and find them interesting :) -
Yeah it can be an inconvenience. Tomorrow is week 11 of 19 weeks so we are past the halfway mark, hip-hip-hooray! I am lucky I can work from home on Fridays and Murdoch is only 20 minutes away. Saves me dropping her off before work, making me late, then picking her up at the end of the day. This way she is only there for a couple of hours. It does eat into my day though but is a small price to pay! (well, the time/inconvenience factor I mean, not the $$ price tag ) Sorry to hear Gibbs has other allergy issues, too

Ptolomy Nannas Apricot Pie Shall I wear steel toe-capped shoes and iron gloves as well?
-
I'm not sure but I think I'd be stuffed if I had to fly Millie again. No blankets or beds in with that one, she'd have it eaten (literally!) by the end of the flight! MG, when are you getting him tested?
-
You'd definitely know if the test included bees/wasps as it is a completely different test, at a completely different price tag Hopefully yours have grown out of it like you say. However, be aware that swelling isn't the only sign of a reaction. My Ruby started out swelling insanely, then I thought the use of AH's was enough as the swelling didn't appear to be that great in the last 2 stings. Little did I know, her reactions were now all happening internally. The last sting she got quite sick (vomiting, lethargic, ears went mucky, not her usual self) so needless to say I took her to the vet and they found she was bleeding in her bowel or something and kept her in for the day. They couldn't give her an injection due to the bleeding. The next day, her ears flaps had swelled up like balloons!!!!!! They then gave her the injection and she was on pills to stop the internal bleeding. MG's boy didn't swell but he went downhill very fast. Vomiting, diarrhoea, pale gums, shock. So just be careful and watch your guys for anything abnormal if they get stung!
-
I've been lucky and neither seem to have food allergies/intolerances. Their main diet is still Canidae Pure Sea, but they get other things in kongs and training treats etc. Could Gibbs will grow out of the reaction to bees?? Both of mine had very bad reactions to stings when younger, not sure if the desensitisation injections have helped, but both have been stung since and not had a problem. In Ruby's case, the allergy/reaction worsened with each sting. Did yours undergo bee desensitization and their reactions are less? That is great, gives me hope that if Ruby gets stung again her reactions won't be so bad. We are currently at week 11.

I should have splurged for a muffin too, as I am getting all sorts of cash refunded to me now Contacted COTD for some crappy products I bought from them for a refund, they approved it within a couple of hours! Bad products, but outstanding customer service I'll give them that!

Woohoo congrats!!!!!!!!!! "skin bundle", love it

That's no good, ncarter! Glad your Stella is ok, though :) Came home yesterday to a lovely present in my mailbox - Ruby's pet insurance cheque :happydance2: So after I get the vet to sign the new claim form on Friday, 11 weeks worth of injections are being submitted (then the final 8 weeks). I'm so glad she is covered! I was going to have to make do if I had to pay it myself, but now that I know my poor overused credit card is going to be fixed with these cheques, it is SUCH a relief!!! :D I celebrated by buying myself a LARGE coffee today before work

Reviewing my goals! RN and SPD titles for both, check! Ruby is semi-retired from agility. Might bring her out for the evening trials at the end of the year, but for the most part, she won't be competing much at all in agility. So I'm scrapping all agility related titles from my goals (she did do 1 ADX trial and came 1st in 500). I'm still aiming for a UD pass, but not sure if we'll get it. We've only done a couple of UD trials this year. Retrieving has surpassed my expectations! My girl has 2 finishes after 4 trials, so another 3 to go for her QND title. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment if she doesn't complete another 3 this season, so the QND is more on the wishlist than the goal list! :) We have a lot of work to do still in this area so this season is more about learning for the both of us and getting some experience. Millie, dear Millie. Taking a bit of a break in trialling her. She has had some awesome rounds but is losing the plot a bit in both obedience and agility, so I will just keep training and trial on the odd occasion. She only needs 1 more pass for her JDX. Not sure how many agility trials I'll get to this year - might wait til the end of the year for her as well when we are back to night time trialling.

This weekend is agility on Saturday, retrieving on Sunday, and obedience/rally-o on Monday :) All at K9 grounds except for retrieving, which is out at Mogumber (so unless you like a road trip, this one is a bit far to pop over )

She's my "spethal" girl

What Is The Age Difference Between Your Dogs?
RubyStar replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
Same age, although I got them 2 years apart. Didn't plan on getting another the same age, nor did I really plan on getting a second dog so quickly. I just saw her on a breed rescue page and she was flown across the country less than a week later  I was just about to start competing with my first dog when she came along. I like 5-6 years between dogs for reasons FHRP mentioned for competing dogs. My two are now 5.5 years so to stick to my plan I should be currently puppy hunting. But the time isn't right and they aren't quite yet in that "maintenance" training mode for competition, they are still learning! I am training up my mum's almost 12 month old pup so that gives me something to work on while I wait for the time to be right for my next addition! -
Great but veeeery tiring weekend for me. All day obedience trialling on Saturday (and a RN title earnt each for Ruby and Millie in Rally), then all day yesterday retrieving trialling at mirawee's place. Ruby finished another trial, woohoo! The last water run was quite a tricky dicky for novice dogs, but 9/10 dogs got it! (the 10th didn't want to get in the water). It was a fair way from the firing point to the edge of the dam wall, then it was a fair swim out to the bird (longer than I thought!). Once the dog disappeared down the dam wall, you didn't see the dog again until it was actually picking the bird up. I waited and waited wondering if Ruby was still on the job or not, then finally saw her head appear in the far distance picking the birdy up - I was mighty chuffed :D She was apparently a bit OCD deciding where to actually enter the water, mirawee reports Kept changing her mind! I got to have Jive cuddles yesterday, too! And I was in bed by 9pm, unheard of for me! I was knackered, and the look on Ruby's face last night after a full weekend was a look of completely and utterly shattered, the poor girl

Congrats again, TSD!!! A win is awesome stuff!! Great work has gone into that win I'm just so thrilled to be finishing trials Never in my wildest dreams thought that Ruby would have finished 2 trials so early in her trialling career! (2 finishes in 4 trials isn't too shabby!!) All I was aiming for this season was a single birdie I need to remember she is still such a novice dog with a novice handler with very little training and experience so when she doesn't get a bird, it's ok. And there will be plenty of times that is going to happen (like our training run after the trial, she couldn't get it), as the 2 finishes are more luck than anything! Tassie, you know you want a gundog :D :D
