Retrieving & Field Training Talk
RubyStar replied to RubyStar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Tapua, your boy is I have given retrieving a break, actually, most of my dog training/trialling has taken a break lately since starting uni. I won't be much help in the way of books, but I'm sure others will! Have a read back through this thread if you get the chance, you might pick up some good tips and resources :) Can't wait to see how you guys go with your training :) I will get back to retrieving one day, most likely with my next dog. Which I'm kind of sad about, but life happens! I have Ruby entered in the upcoming RATG in open but haven't trained in about a year, so not expecting anything. Just giving her a morning out and supporting the RATG :) -
The Norwegian kids Chica and Strauss :D Well you know where I am if you need a hand toileting them again

Exciting news, Ptolomy! Whose babies are they? Hope all goes well even if not to plan :)

I'd highly recommend it Tassie, I've been working through shape up foundation online with my young BC. No way would he have been capable of advanced handling at the Dave Munnings seminar if we hadn't, and i have yet to finish the foundation course yet I'm doing Foundation and Advanced, I'm not addicted at all  I'm excited, I have just signed up for the Shape up Dogs Handling Foundations course as an auditor Start 1 July, so something to work on during semester break -
Hugs xena98 So sorry to hear of the loss of your heart dog Big congratulations however on your Gr Ob Ch with Gabby!!

Sorry to be a nuff nuff, but is this the SG 360 handling system or something else? And can you learn it online anywhere without needing to sell a kidney? :) -
Doesn't sound easy to achieve at all!! Do you get any penalties for not having a perfect start? Or is the perfect start just a personal goal people try to reach?
-
That is awesome, Tassie!!!!! And good on your girl, I am so glad to hear she's still whizzing around the agility courses Congrats, Sayreovi! (OMG name changes do my head in!! ) I'm really not sure what perfect starts means, but with the word perfect in there and all, I'm sure it's brilliant!!!

So you're learning from instructors in person? No, unfortunately no Nationals this year I wanted to, but timing and costs are a factor. Any idea where they will be held in 2 years time? -

Good work, TSD!!! As soon as semester is over, I think I will investigate this new handling system. I want to be clearer to my dogs and see if we can improve! Is it an online course you are taking? Pippa got her last pass needed yesterday for her JDX title so we'll be playing with the big kids now! But we're still in novice agility with 1 pass under our belt - we seem to be messing something different up each time! Her contacts are awesome though We're either flying off that poor excuse for a table (on 200 height for littlies, ugh!), popping the last weave, or running around a jump. She's doing awesomely well on the very little training she's had, so I am definitely not complaining. I just need to get back to the training, she's so much fun to run! :D -
Thanks guys :) Just one extra, small brag. Pippa picked up her last pass needed yesterday for her JDX title, with another first place :) As I've been saying, we can say goodbye to placing ribbons now that she will be up playing with the big kids - we have plenty of awesome Ag Ch. shelties in our 300 height classes!! It will be fun to compete against them though :) Our next trial isn't for a while now anyway.
-
Videos :) Can't wait to find the time to do some more training with this fun little dog!
-
I haven't been here in a while, wow so many great brags!!!! Have come to add one of my own :D Millie made the ADX 500 height finals at our WA State Agility Trial to end 3rd in her height and 5th overall. Her finals run was the best of the weekend as she had been running pretty ho-hum and I almost pulled her from the finals run. So glad I didn't, she decided to not embarrass me in front of everyone which gave me the lift I needed when it comes to running her :) Ruby had 3 very near misses in JDM, poo! BUT - my big brag!!! Pippa the little Ninja is the 2014 Excellent Jumping 300 AND Novice Agility 300 WA STATE CHAMPION!!!
-
Can give you one better, a video! Here is our mini schnauzer and her 2 lab besties :D I love how she uses her tail like a propeller "Nawwww you're swimming without me!!!"

Great work, sheena! And gosh I am so in love with your backyard!! -
That apparently happened with our group order including lots of small items, just roaming around in this flimsy, torn cardboard box with gaping holes Lucky we didn't lose anything, either. Had customs opened it? Because they always rip the boxes open and don't seal them properly. My GoDog got confiscated :-(. I'm not sure as I wasn't the one it was sent to. But from her description, no, it wasn't a case of customs opening it that caused the ripped box. She mentioned the box was extremely flimsy and the packing of the contents itself was appalling, small items like single jump cups just floating about in there. What is GoDog? I assume food?

I've heard of it coming out the rear end, but vomiting them up?! Is that really possible?! I'm going to have nightmares, now
-
And here I am eating a peanut butter sandwich at my desk thinking I must be a real dog person because this isn't grossing me out while eating - except for keisha's story about the poo smeared on the bed Could be worse, I could be eating a vegemite or nutella sandwich
-
Thanks kathq :) I haven't kept track of how many we've entered. We only do night time trials over summer so while we have been trying now for 2 years with no pass, our attempts have been semi-limited I'll keep telling myself that to make me feel better Two trials ago she only missed the glove, I got extremely anxious and she totally tuned out so didn't even turn with me and it was all downhill from there. But it was the first time we had gotten that far still on a pass (she mainly fails 1 article or knocks the bar jump - the jumps are actually my biggest issue at the moment, a question of physical ability over training ability ) Then to our last trial of the year, she acted like she had never been in a ring before in her life Oh, dogs!!! Wish I could figure them out!
-
The way Ruby trials sometimes it looks like she does belong there, then next time she looks like she's never been trained for it, so I feel like we shouldn't be there and that onlookers are wondering why we're even bothering. Our first Open pass took about a year then the other passes came not long after, so I'm hoping the same for UD. I want to crack that first pass!!!!!
-
Kath, I remember reading about all your UD woes, and then you finally cracking that UD! And to now, it seems like she is still consistent enough to pass each time you trial? (bugger the scores weren't enough for OC legs!) You give me hope!!! Please tell me it will get easier Well done on your year
