My older dog became incontinent last year,I wouldnt give her medication because of previous cancer problems. I got some waterproof toweling mattress protectors and cut them to fit the beds and then some cheap polar fleece blankets as they dry fast. I found out later someone at our local market makes waterproof dog beds. I also make her go outside before we go to bed, it seems to work ok. If she gets smelly I shampoo her rear end. My girl was a rescue pup and desexed at 12 weeks old , the vet thinks that may have contributed towards it.

Help, I Just Found A Lump On Sophies Inside Lip
dianed replied to dianed's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just an update on Sophies growths on her inner lip and toe. Yes they where malignant melanomas, but the vet was able to cut all the growths out. So as soon as I am able( I had a run in on Sunday with a 500kg cow and came of second best, thanks to my 2year old gsd Pepper I was able to get away and live to tell the tale) she will be in for the removal of the small one i found on her outer upper lip. I,m sure it has grown since I found it. Will post about Pepper and her distracting the cow when I can type better. -
Help, I Just Found A Lump On Sophies Inside Lip

Hi Staffyluv, she,s ok today, tired but eating and we have been for a short walk. She had a growth (not a melanoma) removed from her foot as well and that has caused more concern for her than the mouth wound, hobbling around holding her leg up with a bandage like a big boot on her foot. Ive taken that off and she,s much happier. Yesterday I found what looks like the start of another melanoma on the soft skin just below her nose, the vet should have picked it up. I,m still waiting for the test results but hopefully this small one can be removed with a local. -

hope this works! A picture of the nasty looking melanoma. Its not real clear as it was hard to hold her mouth open and snap at the same time. -
Help, I Just Found A Lump On Sophies Inside Lip

Sophie had the growth on her inner lip removed today. The vet said it was a melanoma, shes home now and sleeping. I took a photo of it but havent figured out how to downsize it. I thought it would be good for future reference. The best way to describe it is that it looked like a black truffle! Thanks everyone -

Thanks will try, have a dentist app at 4.30 so that will take my mind of it. You do tend to panic when you only have 4 legged kids. -
My 11 year old GSD Sophie hasn't wanted to come for a walk the last few days. I noticed a few days ago she was a bit quiet so before I did a body search for lumps and bumps. I found this lump on the inside of her upper lip, the best way i can describe it is a black cluster about 2 cm round. I rang the vet and have appointment at 9am tomorrow. Has anyone seen this problem before, 2 1/2 years ago Sophie had Hemagiosarcoma of the spleen.I hope its not cancerous, but i have a funny feeling it is. It doesnt look like its attached to anything except the very thin skin on the top lip.

Too right - you wouldn't raise a Giant breed on primarily roo for example. I can agree with Greytmate, My experience is that if I feed roo meat to my two GSd,s as the raw part of their diet for any length of time they loose weight. I rotate now between chicken and roo. They also like it best frozen in chunks.

My two GSd,s have there own beds in my room and that works well for us. My sister and Hubbie went and got a king size bed for themselves so their two Cavaliers and two cats can all fit, plus a set of steps made so the dogs can climb up!

I don't know where you are situated, but on the east coast of NSW we are seeing a lot of brown ticks/cattle/ NZ bottle ticks on our cattle, dogs and cats this summer. They are harmless, they feed and then drop off. Just make sure they are not the Paralysis tick (different colour) in which case I,d treat and be very vigilant.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...... I'm shouting too OMG...i've been avoiding the removal of this dang weed for years. Please sweet lord, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ;) yep...wandering dew used to reduce my boys belly to an itchy spotty mess. Could be the culprit. Hi, When you finish cleaning up the garden if your boy is still itchy try some olive oil or break a fish oil capsule open and put it over his food or in some milk. It seems to have helped my girl who scratched herself day and night.

Hi I am having the same problem with my 20 month old GSD. I thought swimming came naturally to all dogs! My girl spent her first year as a city dog in a backyard before I adopted her six months ago, she has made a big adjustment to life on our 1000 acre Cattle Property. The first time she saw a cow (my hand raised 3 year old fully grown cow who thinks its a dog and walks with us each day))she ran into the dam and promptly went under, surfaced then went under again, this was the middle of winter. I thought I was going to have to go in and rescue her but she was able to make it to the bank. In the last weeks since the weather has warmed up i take her and my 11 year old GSD to the dam, its become apparent that she doesn't know how to swim at all. Even having an older dog there has made no difference. She swims vertically, keeps her head out of the water, paddles furiously and generally panics. I decided I,d go in and get her to come out to me and ended up with her trying to climb on top of me. Not a good idea at all! So now we sit and paddle in the shallows and fetch sticks when they float back in but no way will she go into any depth at all, hopefully in time she will learn to like the water.

i had a similiar problem with one of my GSD,s 3 years ago. Like you i took her to the vet after she started breathing rapidly, she had an ultra sound of the heart and lungs and I was told all seemed ok. She ate normally and was very active. Nine months ago she developed a cough. Further tests revealed she had large mass on the lung, the biopsy results where inconclusive but they said she had lung cancer. She passed away aged 10 last July, i suggest in 6 months time if the breathing is unchanged to have another blood test to see if his levels are the same. Good luck di

A few years ago a friend feed her dog a hunk of uncooked silverside after her freezer was accidentally turned off. Bear her German Shepherd loved it and ate the lot, for the rest of the day he was running around in a panic drinking water! I,d say its ok if its cooked and in small portions.
