  1. As a kid I wasn't that interested in animals. .I ended up on a farm and that all changed. In 1977 I got a registered German Shepherd Dog. She was only 8 weeks old when we picked her up and she became the love of my life. I kept 2 pups from her only litter. She lived to 13.3 years and her pups both made 12yo . I was dog less for a couple of months and then got an abandoned pup from gsd rescue, shes still with me. I have my third rescue dog now . Without them, life would be very boring. I think I should turn this place into a retirement home for aged animals, at the moment I have a horse who is 35yo,my present cat is 15 and one of my gsd,s is 12.5. My old cat died last year at 19.5.
  2. Who 'smacked' your dog??? Me! as she was very naughty chasing a little dog and she wouldn't come back when I called. I wouldn't come back either if I knew I would get smacked when I did. Without sidetracking this thread in to who and why of the smack, I can you can assure all it was the first time ever. Done in frustrating as it happened last time we ran into this little dog. A 35 kg gsd chasing a mini foxie. We have builders going up & down our track which is shared by 3 properties driving like it was a freeway regardless of wildlife and if they had ran in front of one of them it would have been the end of one or both dogs.
  3. I was going to suggest something along those lines as well, my daughters young BC was getting out , they got warned by the a very nice ranger on more than one occasion. He was jumping over a 7ft side fence, anyway they got an electric fence unit and put wire all around the perimiter. I investigated those containment collars and found them unsuitable in this case. Being the smart breed that he is it took one zap and he hasn't been out since. You can set the units to different strengths. It was better than having a roaming dog or worse a dog hit by a car.

  5. I cant even walk on my own place!!!! I,m sitting here reading dol waiting to walk my dogs, hoping the neighbor and her little foxie thing who walks up the track on our property each day has been and gone. Cause yesterday Pepper chased the little dog and got a smack....... blast now its raining .
  6. I just bought a large one on ebay for my lab after reading the reports here for $17.50 inc postage.. d'oh ! ;) - $69 bucks @ Petbarn ours was. Don,t worry you are not the only one
  7. He,ll remember to unload in the future. Now he knows how it feels, revenge of the ducks
  8. It will probably go away over night. They seem to be on the move, two weeks ago I had a red belly in my veggie patch. He was more frightened than me. Think he was after the mice in the compost bin, anyway haven't seen him since even though I have been looking thank goodness. Two days ago a big goanna was in the yard, now I know why my cat has been staying in. Pepper took of after it and did it run ...
  9. Sorry for your loss, its never easy even at that great age .I am sure you will miss her dearly. I hope you have plenty of happy memories.
  10. Oh no, That,s very sad to hear I was hoping he,d make it.
  11. I got one 2 weeks go for my gsd,s and I got to say its amazing the amount of top coat and under coat it got out. They look much better, and the house has less hair, but I am not sure about using one on Westies. I thought it was only for dogs with a lot of undercoat? Even the cat has benefited from it, she hides when she sees me with it now.
  12. Not in all cases, depends on what food you think is causing it. My young gsd has red rashes all over her and is biting herself again. We are off for a swim in the dam. It could be a bit heat related as its humid here atm. If that doesn't work, I,ll bath her and then if she still has the itch I will rinse her. When she was scratching badly 2 years ago she didn't have any fleas so the rinse was a last resort and it worked. I reckon she had mites. Her coat even thickened up afterward. Have you tried some Roo meat or tails if you think its food related. If shes not used to all raw I,d cook a little to start with.like you did the chicken. She may vomit it all up again, mine did to start with as when I got her I think she had been fed on tin food. You must have some produce/ pet store down your area where you can get some affordable raw meat. I came from down your area btw.
  13. Its spelt Nucidol, I have a tin in front of me. Its 200g Diazinon, an organo phosphate. If you google it you will see diazinon is used in some dog washes and flea collars. Its good for mites and ticks etc on dogs and lots of other uses. Years ago after moving from a farm in Vic to the coast my dogs got fox mange. It was recommended I use it and it did the job, my dog was biting herself red raw. I mix it up only when My dogs get itchy and rinse them after a bath. I use advantix for fleas. Lucky we have been flea free for 2 years. I hate using any sort of chemicals on them. Your use of cider vinegar interests me, I have a 12 yo who is in the early stages of incontinence. I knocked back Hormone based medication as she has had Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen nearly 4y ago. we manage at the moment, I am lucky to have no carpet. I think ShepherdAngels itch probs are most likely food based. A vet told me once ear infections are their best money maker. Only one vet suggested a polyp and an op, by that time Charlotte was 18yo.
  14. When I got my girl 18 months ago she had a red itchy ear, she,d scratch till it bled inside. She,d had it for awhile as her hair was rubbed off around her ear. She also had a scratch problem which I got rid of by rinsing her in Nucidol ( I think its used in Malaseb), and used Advantix. For the ear I used Canaural Ear drops, I had some left over from my cat who,d had an ear op. After a few goes it went away. I have noticed she scratches more when feed chicken mince from the pet shop. She has also vomited raw food at times, (except chicken necks), so I usually zap her food in the micro wave and half cook it, mostly its roo meat she cant handle. Funny thing is both my gsd,s like it half frozen. I wish you luck, After having a cat with an ear infection all her life and having used numerous vets at one time or another and getting different diagnoses as to whats caused it, nobody really knew but they kept taking my dollars. It was only at the end of her life that she had some peace when she was operated on and a polyp removed. The drops could then reach her ear canal and keep the problem under control.
  15. Hope Shyla,s OK. In the past my shepherds have had limps from playing rough or chasing me on the quad, usually they get over it in 3 or 4 days with a bit of rest and pampering.
  16. I second that, what a wonderful age he lived to. I hope you have lots of happy memories of Buddy
  17. Hugs to you and Buddy I had a cat once who had seizures and it was pretty scary, even though they only lasted a short time. It ended up being a neurological problem. Wow, 16 years is a great age for a gsd, my first much loved girl lived to 13.5 and I thought that was old. Hopefully blood tests will shed some light on why its happening.
  18. I,d say her stomach is empty hence the noises. Can you tempt her with some chicken or something nice that she likes . Both of mine recently went off their food and ate grass(at different times) also had a bit of the runs. After a few days ever thing returned to normal, I put it down to a virus of some kind that will pass. It would be different if she was lethargic and not alert.
  19. I got some enduro foam specially cut to make indoor dog bedding, 3ft by 3ft and 4 inches thick. I had covers made in heavy duty suede with velcro on one end. My older dog stretches out on her bed to sleep and after nearly 18 months the foam shows no sign of compacting. The foam was $40 and cover $20. In winter I put rugs on top for extra warmth. She prefers this bed to her outside trampoline bed.

  21. Beth86, good on you for wanting to go back to the bush, I hope you do. We recently had a young male vet working at out local clinic, he came out to preg test 50 heifers (and yes his arm was sore afterward). He was from a farming background and was happy to deal with large animals. He told us only 2 who graduated in his class wanted to be country vets. The majority where females and they all planned on being city vets dealing with small animals. He commented that is where the money is.
  22. My thoughts exactly, she wants to be grateful she doesn't walk past my young dog with a pole cause that would have my girl on alert bigtime! It must be something that's happened in her past to make her that way, is there any way you can find out the reason for carry a pole. If she s that scared I,m surprised she walks the street at all. Very sad to be that fearful of animals......
  23. The Caseys Beach Vet Clinic on Beach Road Batehaven used to run puppy preschool as well. Sorry I cant tell you more info as I have had no need to use them. Maybe if you get the puppy owner to contact both clinics, I have used them both in the past and they are very approachable.
