I agree with Smooch, I use the WW Natura brand Psylium Husks for my older girl who is constantly constipated. It works next day after I mix it in a bowl of milk, shes a fussy eater and its best to add it to milk as she leaves her food some nights.

Sorry I cant be much help but I can sympathize as I had a female gsd with this problem over 15 years ago. Back then it was antibiotics which cleared it up, but a few weeks after it returned. My vet cauterized them on more than one occasion, I used heaps of antibiotic cream as well and generally bathed the area daily. I think I managed it for about 4 years or so. When they become unmanageable and not pleasant for her she was pts at the age of 12.3. My vet did say at the time that there was a specialist vet in Sydney who could operate and remove the glands.

I,d say she is being a typical shepherd. Why eat dry kibble if you can eat nice tasty things like chicken necks, roo mince and other goodies. My 2 gsd,s are not keen on kibble at all, I have tried various brands over the last few months even resorting to putting some cat kibble on top of the bowl( they ate it then). They prefer their 4x2 biscuits, I have an open container and they help themselves to them after they have had their raw food each night.

I have a 12.5 yo gsd, she,s always been on the lean side and a very fussy eater. She,s feed a mainly raw diet these days and walks up to 4ks in the morning and a short walk at night. Today she had her last Cartrophen injection and I have to say she has a bounce in her walk that wasn't there before and even runs around her younger mate. I think its all in the genes myself, plus good diet.

Have you tried the fat/satin ball recipe that you make up yourself. I have been feeding it to my girl to put weight on her, shes a finicky eater but she loves them and it does work wonders. *

WTF do you suggest that she does with the teenage foster children she has??? Simply 'send them back'?? Where do you think these children will go? Or do you not care? Honestly, you people are stupid. Yeah right stupid are we!! I know people who do foster and they get paid for it. Its non taxable and does not effect a pension entitlement if one happen to receive one. Ive even known of one person in my town who blatantly did it for the money,Some of the kids that this person has fostered have had many personal problems, maybe the gsd being an astute breed of dog has picked up on certain things. Hopefully the dog can be re homed to a more suitable environment.

I,m with Longcoat on this, He should be your first priority..in my opinion hes not happy in the current environment and hes showing it. If fostering kids comes first in your book then your dog should be re homed. I have a 4yo gsd who was surrendered by her former owners, she is now a very much loved happy adjusted dog in a new home.

My 12yo had her first cartrophen injection last week and I can see the difference already . She had stiffness in her back legs to the point where on our daily walk she would leave drag marks in the gravel and wobble a bit. She has a huge improvement in her movement and after her second injection on Wednesday I expect to see an even better result. She seems a lot happier in herself as well. I,m thinking my 14yo cat will be next as she is very stiff in the rear end, has anyone used it on their cat and had good results?

It happened to my dogs once .....to much salt water. It clears up fairly quickly, if it still goes on after a few days I,d be looking at other reasons.

Did you ask her vet to give her a call?? Most people leave their work numbers with the vet.

What about using your names or part of them, we got the name of our property by using the first few letters of our christian names "Dijon" Just happened to be a town in France we have been to and a brand of mustard!!!

My young dog hasn't learnt that we do not chase snakes. She thinks everything small that moves is fair game. On our walk this afternoon near the dam she chased a black snake but this time I wasn't close enough to see what happened, I ran and threw a large stick to separate them. To be on the safe side we went to the vet, but after 2 hours she wasn't showing any signs and we couldn't find any marks, so we came home. I,ll be glad when this snake season is over, had way to many around the place..........

Back in December I got my dogs smoked lambs bones to put away as Xmas presents, when I went to use them they where full of dead black insects. My dogs wouldn't have a bar of them, they came from a stallholder at our local market who deals in smoked and dried treats for dogs and cats. I know they keep the products under netting in summer because of the flies......at $3.50 a bone never again.

How lucky you are. My first shepherd years ago did the same for me, she was the perfect guard dog in every way. People where always cautious coming to my place. Shes been gone 18 years and I have had a couple of big babies( being polite) in between but reckon my latest girl has the guarding/ protection instinct. Good on ya Sophie & Vadar

Have a friend who,s dog is on the Carprofen Tabs as the injections gave him the runs. They seem to work well. Can you let me know how it turns out if he,s put on medication for incontinence. I was thinking last night that at my dogs age it probably will not shorten her life any. If it continues thru winter I will do something. thanks

I can sympathize with you, I,m currently having the same problem with my 12.5 yo girl. She wets wherever she sits, her bed has wet spots on it day & night. I have tiles and polished concrete through out so I can see the spots., I run the over them mop everyday. I believe the only way to control the problem is medication. From what I have read on here it works well. I haven't resorted to them as my girl had cancer 3 years ago and I plan to try and manage as best I can with out hormone treatment. I use thick beach towels doubled over on all her bedding now. I am washing more these days. The rubber backed mats will help you a lot. With your carpet have you tried vinegar in a bit of water for the smell. It worked well when my old cat was around. Apart from professional cleaning I,m not much help in that department. I try to limit her water intake at night, plus a loo trip before bed. She gets a smell about her, lucky its summer and we visit the dam each day. She,s going deaf also and getting stiffness in the back end. I had her to the vet last week and I will be starting her on cartrophen injections as the cooler weather comes.

I was at the vet this morning and I overheard them talking about a new once a month pill for fleas. Its called Comfortis, a chewable meat flavored tablet that starts killing fleas within half an hour and a 100% kill in 4 hours. $13 a pill!Has anyone used it yet?

I thought swimming came natural to all dogs until I got my girl. The day after I got her she meet my pet cow, it chased her and she ran into the dam and she went under. I was going into rescue her when she did a paddle of sorts and made it back to the bank. Nearly two years later she still only goes in water up to her belly unless I go in as well. This year at the ripe age of 4 she has managed to progress from being a vertical swimmer to a horizontal swimmer

I live on a large rural property and my two female dogs stay within the "house yard" even though its only 4 strands of barb wire. I wondered the same as you when I got my youngest dog , she had spent the first 16 months of her life in a fenced suburban yard. When I first got here I would tie her up if I went out, which wasn't for long periods. When I thought she was settled and wouldn't chase after me I left her loose. Have you taken Kane out there so he gets used to the place? Having the other two around may make him feel more secure and knowing you are close by may help. I am often amazed how my two run up to the fence and bark at things outside, they have obviously set a "perimeter" for themselves. Most other farm dogs I know off do the same.

Maybe you can dampen the dry food a bit and add it to his tin food, Royal Canine holds its shape when damp, he probably left them cause they where hard. With the tin food he doesn't have to chew. Something he will have to learn later on. Dogs love fish(or one of mine does) so if its available give him that as well. I don't feed tin food, so I cant comment but if he,s putting weight on fed him as much as you can. Good luck with him.
