Completely agree with that.... And I would also stay clear of places who kennel dogs of different families together e.g. Dural Pet Resort

I PM'd you Sagittarian...

Juice there wasn't that much in terms of dogs sports... A few breed stalls, quite a few rescue groups but the majority was retailers / manufacturers spruiking their wares. I thought paying $25 for talking to salespeople and coming home with a few sample bags of dog food was an odd experience...

Same as BC crazy.... Awesome stuff. Depending on $$$ and where you are (pick up from sydney?) I may be able to buy a few bags...

Might pop in for a short while. Was quite underwhelmed by last year's...

I for one would stay clear of Pets Resorts Australia. I've used them in the past and thought a "big name" trainer was a guarantee of some sorts. Multiple unknown dogs sharing a kennel? Not worth the risk (lesson learnt at my own dogs' expense )

Another massive fan of Linda Vogelnest here... I've followed her from Sydney Uni in Camperdown to Camden (bit of a drive!) and now SASH in Ryde. Not sure where you're based Tara, but well worth the travel IMO

Discouraging Dog From Getting On Furniture
fbaudry replied to ~Anne~'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I had all my hopes on the space blanket.... Alas it failed completely. Penny has no issue making herself comfortable on it and curling up to sleep. -
Just Google Scat Mat. They run on batteries & when the dog jumps on it, it gives off a little static charge just like when you touch a car door handle when the wind is blowing Sheena, have you used one yourself? I bought one maybe 4 years ago and it stopped working after a couple of uses (yes, I did check the batteries!). I was pretty annoyed as it wasn't cheap (around $150 from memory). I recently tried the space blanket trick on the couch.... Makes no difference, it's just scratched and pulled out of the way despite my best attempts at securing it.

Vicks vaporub, or similar camphor deep heat lotions, can work as well

Great leads! Nothing beats the look and feel of a good leather lead IMO

Phew, I thought I was the only kill joy around for a while... The way they run around corners

Contact Wayrod on here... Best service ever too!

Oh wow Kavik, that's like 5mn drive from my place, I didn't realise you were so close. Doesn't look that great either... I believe in the past that space was divided into smaller enclosures and dogs segregated based on activity level and size? I checked their FB page; why would you put up a video of a dog howling, surrounded by barking ones? They all seem so stressed... Maybe I should start threatening my two with going to daycare!

I feel for you.... Whilst I agree with Huski that dogs (and more so "working" ones) should be given a job and an outlet for their natural drive, I think this is a dry tricky situation. Toby has had the ultimate reinforcement / reward a few times, performing the whole hunting and killing sequence. I think in your current environment (small pets, wildlife, cats, smaller dogs etc) it is near impossible to implement a completely fail proof management strategy (it just takes one kid to leave the wrong door open etc) As harsh as it sounds, I believe for everyone's sake she would be better off being rehomed, with full disclosure, to a home where she won't have access to any potential prey. Finding a owner willing to work with her to channel her prey drive would be great, but I really think in your current situation, even if you were to find the time to train her in an activity channeling her drive, more accidents are bound to happen. Incidentally, a few decades ago my aunt lost her whole flock of chooks (around 25 from memory) and two goat kids to a standard poodle who had escaped. It wasn't its first offence and from what I remember by that time the owners had rebuilt and reinforced their fencing in an attempt to contain their dog.

Thank you guys! Trying to narrow down the "options" with these friends and manage their expectations. I'll keep on browsing on the PAWS site and chatting to Jane once we are a bit clearer on what it is they realistically want!

SAS, That's been a regular part of my dogs diet and produces the same results as coconut oil, calendula tea and the Augustine Approved supplements. I.e. None

My apologies if that has been covered already... Acquaintances of mine have been talking for a while about getting a dog, and they now feel they are ready to take the plunge. They're still in the search stage but lean towards adopting an adult dog. They are a "mature" couple, no kids, living in an apartment with one of them working from home at times. I think going through a reputable rescue group that fosters and temp test is the way to go (as opposed to adopting an unknown quantity from a pound). I know of PAWS but was wondering if there are any other groups around Sydney you would recommend? Thank you guys

What Would You Expect From A Dog Walker?
fbaudry replied to whitka's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hey Whitka, I thought the attached blogpost might be of interest to you: http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendoftheleash/what-do-dog-walkers-need-to-know A lot of good points have been mentioned before (insurance etc) If you were to drive the dogs around, I'd expect each of them to be crated individually in your vehicle (I'm really uneasy with multiple dogs in close proximity in a confined space). Also I'd want my dogs to be on leash at al, times, and to avoid areas where they can be rushed at by off leash dogs. -
Lesson With Luci Ellem At Camarna Kennels

Only ever attended her puppy school.... Wish I did not, and would never go back. -
He is so seriously cute!!! And I'm sure you're getting all the JRT X comments. I love how they're such a no nonsense breed. I'd love to hear and learn more about their temperaments and overall behaviour. Hard to imagine he's a sighthound!
