Teaching A Pup Where To Poo
GSDhandler replied to Dracdog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
it would be nice to know, but my pup seems a little shy. she goes in the garden a lot, which i praise her like a mad man for, but she still rather oo on the flagsone under our washing line. to be honest, i am mainly grateful its not on the carpet, but it would be nice to know how to get her in the trees all the time. as i said she is shy so moving her is a bit of a prob, -
im very limited in knowledge when it comes to dogs, but from waht you described, i so dont know, becuae it almsot soundls like courting behaviour... alhtough niether should have any sex drive, since they are both desexed. ??? :? i really dont know mate. so long sa it hasnt become an impediment on the dogs livng style let it play out for another week or so. then maybe speak to a pro

only to those who havent read this yet. i think i have to tell a lot of naughty plants off over the next few days. as for toilet training, since i gave it a go on one of my crazier days she seems a little more inclined to wait. that may just be improving bladder and bowel control though

thankyou all for your words. i cant beleive how upset i still get over harvey, even though i have my own 10 wk old horror running around here at the moment.
-
those 5 years meant a lifetime to him, i am sure. RIP Charlie ;)

i coudlnt beleive it. in the heart of adelaige, under rundle mall there is a petshop (adelaidians know the one, harris scarfe) and they have the typical plastic ones but they also had the proper wire crates in yesterday, and i asked. they said tehy have them in regularly. i didnt bother asking the price as i was in a hurry. i know ther is another on north terrace, just before it turns into magill road. huge dog shop there.

i am so sorry. there isnt much else that can be said but that ou gave her a good end, and you did what you could.

i was housesitting for some extended family, to look after Harvey, as he had been sickly. a week from us getting there, he woke me at 3, frantic and crying. i just knew. and he wanted his mum and dad, and they were over 200 ks away. we called them, and told them what was happening, and they decided at 6 they would head back. harvey passed at 7 am but he saved his mum and dads life. their petrol hose had gone, and had they not returned as soon as they had, they may not have made it either. he was almsot 15, riggled with tumours, and had only been born with half a heart. he put up a great fight.

Can Dogs Be Intolerant To Eggs?
GSDhandler replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
its always possible. humans have alleries to everything. it could be possible that her stomach just isnt quite strong enough to handle the bacteria in the egg. i've had dogs who can eat absolutly any kind of buiscut they want, but i have a feeling my pup has a weaker belly atm, and i have to give her the more expensive brand, since she has loose bowel movement with the still dencent and expensive ones, but the real expensive ones (which i am not going to keep her on) firm it all up again. (the expensive one is science diet if your curious. i got a free bag with the pup) -
perseverance is key. my pup is 10 wks now too, but she started biting at 8 wks, so now we have had 2 weeks of corrections. she is getting there. she tries to bite, and you can see going through her head if its worth the risk. the leegburgh (spelling?) ebook helped a little, not the one on biting, funiily enough. the one on being pack leader. now i take her toys away when i dont want her plaing, which makes traing easier, and she gets a toy when she ahs been good or i am going out. she is prob teething, so she loves chewing her kong, and ignoring the food in it at the mo. also it means she plays better, because she isnt overwhelmed with all these play things. it makes her respect me, and means that when i dont want to play but i know she needs to i can throw her a toy, and she entertains herself although it puts the burden of remembering on me. i forgot when i went to grab a bottle of milk, thinking it was 5 minutes. she tore a dvd case to pieces, but i knew it was my fault. so now im careful to give her the right toys. as i said each pup is a differnet learner, and you have to find your puppys trigger. mine is play oriented, so food seems a little useless, but she is also very defiant so i have to be stern with her, whereas her sisters were playful but already obedient.

most PPS are designed to be sterile so you can get your pup in at 8 wks. but some can be competitive. i wanted to get mine in at 8 wks, ands he has to wait till 11 because htey were just booked out. now my baby has to wait.

For The Schutzhund Enthusiasts - Some Bite Work
GSDhandler replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
most K9 work, even in security we try to relax the dog enough that it can be patter afterward, esp in PP. from the exposure ive had anyway. the dogs ive watched were all still in training. the one with experience was amazing. straight after a bite, he could shut down. -
glad to hear the clothes and hands are recpvered. each dog learns differently, so in that case i am so glad that so many differnet options were put up. i woulndt have been able to put up with it.

How To Rear A Pup To Be Left During The Day
GSDhandler replied to blithespirit's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
im a shift worker, adn my partner has a regular job. we got koda at the start of a weekend so we could start toilet training her right away, then the monday i had to go to wrk, but came home in between my shifts to check on her. i start ewarly and finish early so when my partner leaves she has still had him for company for about 3 hrs. she doesnt spend long alone. she is ok with it, as she is used to it. i got help up though yesterday and could see what a routine she was in, as i was 30 minutes late, adn that 3o minutes was enough for her to turn our tiels into a swimming pool. tiles is better than carpet though a lot of people are recommending puppy training pads to me, so maybe an option to you? -
im trying to save my plants, not kill them and as for chewing, a mate said that tehir partens lab would eat everything, including light fixtures, so tehy would spread vaselene on everything. got him out of cewing right away, however, i dont have that option, as it would destroy the finishes on my furniture. if you can try it, then give it a go, if chewing is the prob.
-
just to check in, being real firm with koda on her snout and giving a squeeze has done it. if shes grumpy and doesnt want to let it happen, i then to give her a bit of a rough, and she stops very quickly now. however when she is biting, she is biting harder. this is because shes gaining that bite inhibition, right?
-
i had to do this woth Koda. becuase i got her in her first week of the behaviour we are seeing a lot of improvment, and truth be told she loves me more for it because she respects me.
-
thanks all. ignoring her when she did it and distracting her seems to have worked. i will talk about it with a few folk and trainers soon, as she is starting her PPS soon, and i also know a couple of top bevaiour trainers from proffesional connections. am going to keep an eye on her for a bit.
-
she seemed ok today. its just when she starts to get stressed she gets pretty bad, which means its a nervious thing. am goign to get her some nice stress releivng rubber toys to go with all her favourite messy fluffy ones
-
think you should speak with a behavioural therapist, or vet bout this, cause she may neeed light sedatives for the first few weeks.
-
good suggestion nekhbet. will have to give it a go.
-
i think she doesnt realise you arent a dog. what i do with mine is i walk a bit slower, and dont stop or go round koda. i just kep walking, and eventually my egs start sweeping her a little. she gets uncomfortable with ebing thrown off course, and stops.

how long does it typically take?
