What To Expect With A Brand New Puppy/hints Tips With A New Pup
GSDhandler replied to PomsNZ's topic in Puppy Chat
just for fun add the tip that came up a little while ago, the tell the naughty plants off not the puppy for chewing them. i couldnt believe it , but it did work!!! -
i tend to use chicken necks as a treat, but i have to be careful cuase my 10 wk old would eat them whole. now that shes 12 wks i am starting to feed her larger things. um, i would throw a few into the bowl, and reduce the kibble a little... personally 1/4 cup per 2-3 necks, but thats just my preffenrence since i am still convincing my pup to play nice. apparantly to prevent them eating them whole you can freeze them, but then you have to remember in this weather to keep the pup plenty warm.

you've gt crying and crying and crying and crying and crying? :p my experience was a lot of clingy puppy, since she decided i was the new mum. and then the toileting issue is one. um, i had a it of a prob teaching her who was boss, with mouthing, and then feeding. and i was terrified that she would hurt herself on everything, forgetting how hardy she was. and the big one, no sleep for a few days while she settles in, then having to run her to the toilet. i think they were the biggies. prob just mention that while thier diet is changing from breeders to thier own it might get a bit messy and smelly. :D -
most of the diet change is gradual and hte thing is that its only in the morning. :D i can give her almost anything at night, and in the morning, i have to rush her outside to save my floors :p however i have found that mixing a bit of rice into her dinner is helping. and yeah, was Hills science diet, sorry.

RIP Sprog :D

the stuff i was given said that a bitch that has false pregnancies is more suceptabel to cancers and defects that affect intact bitches almost exclusivly. the big one to look out for is pyometras. however the more seasons your dog goes through the more likely it becomes. try and find out asap. my vet clinic (of course they want to encourage spaying) said that 25% of all older bitches have pyometras. hope things look up soon. maybe give her something to snugle for a bit, just to settle her down a little.

it was for about a week, every time i took her out in the morning she would have the runs. changed her diet, and nothing. turns out if i put ahandful of science diet in her dinner, no matter what ele i give her it makes it all better. thought i'd put it here, incase any one else was having similar probs.

This is actually not a good idea, you have a large breed puppy and allowing her to jump like this is providing continual shocks to her front assembly, you could be setting her up for joint problems as an adult. I agree that dogs have to be familiar with steps and how to negotiate them, but allowing a young puppy to race up and down them is asking for trouble. I used to have steps here and a couple of my dogs injured themselves, we now have a ramp as Sway suggests. Steps/stairs and dogs are not a good combination. dont get me wrong, i agree with your point, but for me to get a ramp for her would mean i would have to deal with my joints being injured and i cant do her much good as an owner like that.

the beinifit is mainly house trianing, also according to some it asserts you as the dominant one in the pack. i find its mainly to stop the terror eating my carpet.
-
generally every 2 wks. if he doesnt seem to be improving, a vet may need to give him something, then monitor him for a while. thats the prob once tehy get worms, cause they dont want to leave again.
-
Are you going to end up breeding her? just becuase if you are only thinking about it, or you arent sure, then please get her spayed, as bitches who have frequent false pregnancies are more likely to develop things like mammary cancer. but yeah, agree to ask in the breeders forum.

i find anything chicken works well with my pup. as soon as they have left mum its ok to start getting them sued to bones. i started with necks, given a few wings, and whne hse's really good she gets a frame. the breeder i got her from used to throw a few carcasses into the pens and let the dogs go for it.

Teaching A Pup Where To Poo

its all repetition repetition repetition . *sigh* and time... and lots of cleaning products. i am always wary of bleach cause some pets are drawn to the smell and make themselves sick on it, eg, cats. big probs for them. and when we use CLR i have to lock Koda away cause she loves the smell and would prob have a go at drinking it. -
my pup had to learn stairs at 8 wks when we first brought her home. now she dives off the 4th one. the sooner they learn the better. as for preventing it getting bowled over by the older ones, have it on a leash with you, let the others down and thed take the pup. an Ed Frawley beleives that you need to tach the dogs to go up or down staris after you to maintain dominance of the pack. IMHO there is too much of this "do this or your dog will ebcome dominant" crap out there, but it might be worth a try to protect your pup.

one or two pages in we have a thread on this. it was a lab, but a lot of god suggestions in it. should have a look

a poodle X i used to have would do this. the vet we had reccomended Glycerine. clearly he didnt have to clean up after her we found she had leaned to do it for attention, so for a whle we stopped paying it attention, and instantly ti would stop. then when i moved out, mum began to fuss over her again. the prob seems to have stoped completely thought.

he's gonna be sulky when he gets home. he already sulks when the dog chooses to sleep on my side of the room. i guess i will have to train him a litte harder as well. best part about the dog, even though shes vocal, she cant really answer back.

exactly could feel like some days i was hitting my head against a brick wall, but since she learned her kong, it has been a godsend, since even when its empty she knows that the kong is out, i dont chew things. she doesnt even chew my hand much any more to everyone who has been helping.

we have made some awsome progress. the last few nights, its just been me and the dog, OH has gone away for the wkend. she has been bliss. no accidents inside except for this morning cuase i wouldnt wake up, no torn carpets, no chewed curtains.

'm just grateful its not in the house any more, to be honest. she has a good habit of making it the back of the garden along teh fece line. just a bit of a pain that every once in a while she holds on too long, and drops em sooner, so i miss them when im doing picking up rounds, and my shoes do the picking up persistance is the key. -
Harvey's mum and dad have a little shrine for him ATM and keep forgetting he isnt there any more, and so every so often still put food down for him. they have taken in a rescue dog now, though mum seems a little non plused. she isnt quite sure whether or not she can keep it, emotionally.

every time koda does soemthing we give her a growl, and often tend to ignore her for behjaviours like biting, but it just desnt seem to have done much good lately, as she just keeps bting. have tried every suggestion from the threat in here someone put up bout their 14 wk shep pup, to no avail. she chews teh carpet, so have tried telling her off in the act (she thinks its a game, no matter what we try) and she wont stop ripping things up. every time we leave the house something new is torn. she is opening cupboards and climbing on top of things now. i lave her lots of stimuli toys, and chew toys to give her alternatives. also she is housetrained when we are home, but the moment we walk out the front door, even for 30 sec she tiolets indoors, even on her own bed. i am pretty sure its her "up yours" for us leaving, but i dont know what to do about it. to make matters worse, she was meant to start puppy school yester and when we got there no one was there, even though i was at teh place at the time they gave me, so am going to try and sort that out tomorrow, but no other school wants to take her because seh is 11 wks old now, and they think she is too old. i am at my witts end, because i know i am not emant to get mad at her, but i cant help it when she manages to seek out everything to chew on, no matter what i am doing with it. i dont want to make her an outside dog, because i dont beleive in keeping a dog outside alione for so long (also want to keep the garden ) any advise would be appreciated. and i know it may be the solution, but any alternative to a specialist would be great becuase if anyone has been keepning up wiht me, they know im in strife atm cause someone wrote off my car, then has put me a whopping $5G in debt to get any other car of equal drivability cause my OH wouldnt listen to my fab womanly knowledge (just kidding guys) so anything that is going to cost a lot is really not going to make my day any better. thanks

trid it on your dog? might be a better success rate :D unfortunatly, my pup seems to think its a great game me telling off the socks, or the torn carpet. it did work on my poor dilapidated plant though. however, the only accidents she has inside arent really her fault, becuase we are out, or i am refusing to wake up after a monster shift, so mainly just stick her outside, and clean up.
