  1. puppies do howl a lot, and sonce she is a petshop pup you took on a handful to start with. every dog is different (goes without saying, but i need to say it) so she will not be the same as oskar. my pup howled every time i put her hout, until i left her out there with her water bowl, a bit of kibble. and i went in to sort out sme chaos in my room. after about 30 minutes she stoped, so i let her back in. played and cuddled her, and just kept doing it. now she is ok by herself. as for house training, only persistance will do it. waht are you cleaning the floors with. anything with amonia in will encourage her to keep doing it. as for laundry, thats my pups place when we go out, so try and teach her during the time i am home that its a nice place. i feed her in there, and keep her water in there, with the door jamed open, and it seems she is getting a lot better with it. do try and stick with it. passing her onto someone else may be better or may be worse. as i said, she was a petshop dog, so after 2 months of having no human (or social at all) contact she will be a little sketchy. try and arange a few quiet playdates for her on weekends, to start socialising her. good luck ps sorry for my spelling.
  2. your poor pup. QUOTE (Aubrey @ 11th Sep 2008 - 11:38 AM) * Dogs by nature can be dominant or agressive, it is the dog more than the owner, i also disagree. some dogs that would be "aggressive by nature" are absolute teddy bears because they have good owners, who can control thier dogs. as for recovery probably start slowly reintroducing her to familiar other dogs. mine had to be introduced to dogs smaller than her to get her out of it. try not to encourage fear behavoir, and show her that you are her pack leader and you are going to protect her. also if it starts to get really prolonged see a proffesional. sorry for the spelling. am in a rush. will fix it later.
  3. yes it does. my girl is ahlf way both ways. she loves trying to chase SUVs, which tests her restraints to thier limits, and is how the D ring on the collar probably met its match, but other times, when they are the classics i like to stare at and drool over she hates them. it would probably just be the noise. just try and slowly get him used to it, and hopefully he will grow out of it.
  4. i wish i could have done that with my pup. she was fairly isolated, because of my work and my OH work, she hasnt really hada lot of social interaction, and so now i am having trouble teaching her the right behaviour.
  5. it al depends on your dog, and how well you can read them. my pup was amazing. from 9 wks she only needed to go out 2 time at night, and at 12 wks she just held on....... now shes 17 (i think, lost track) and she manages to hold on when we go out, and take unexpectedly longer, and holds on all through the night. amazing for her age. as for him wanting to play.... if you can tell the differnece, just ignore it. i used to play my little onster out totally before we went to bed, that i almost had to carry her, so i knew when she woke up it was to go to the toilet.
  6. my pup os 5 months and already has lost nearly all her milk teeth. on the other hand, my mums dog had the double fangs and it never bothered her. the teeth were healthy and it didnt bother her. they jus recently fell out themselves, years later.
  7. i got some cute pics of koda on the stairs in the photo thread. she loves them and hates that she is getting too big to sleep on them.
  8. poor Max. sounded lovely. and 13 for a dobe.... wow RIP Max
  9. maybe not in the dead of winter makes for a shaking puppy. but the breeder we got Koda from recommended it for summer
  10. would like to know the same thing cause i am worried that little miss might do the same thing.
  11. im so sorry WS. Satu was a beautiful girl and for thta month that you had her out of the pound, it made it worth it for her. RIP Satu
  12. some relies useed vaseline. its not harmful but a lot of dogs dont like it.
  13. i found Nekhbet the best person to talk about on biting. he gave me some suggestions on my own thread and they worked like a charm. the breeder i got Koda from recomended that you take a firm hold of the snout (thank Dog for long nosed dogs) but dont squeeze too hard and tell them, in their face NO. they get a bit worse becuase they start testing you. when they do, give them a scare and they dont do it again. i found using a combination of bite inhibition to stop the intensity of the bite, then moving to bite removal techniques like the snoute grab, thounge press (only if your fingers are already there) and the yelp all worked becuase they made it unpleasant for her to bite me. be sure never to do what my OH does. he balls up, and so her prey drive goes nuts, and she starts to really bite, then i have to isolate her, while i patchin him up, tehn tell him off for being so stupid. best of luck. try typing biting into the search bar at the top (and sort through the millions of topic suggestions) because i think everyone has posted at least once on their puppy biting :D
  14. sory, havntchecked what else people have, but in my expereince Kongs Kongs and Kongs mine loves the kong variet of other things as well, like the lumpy balll that has all these wierd welts. she chases that one like mad, nad the regular ball, along with standard kong of course. and nyla bone
  15. so sorry for your loss. RIP Darcy :p
  16. much agreed. i guess it just becomes what works for you.
  17. agreed. if i had been in any way aggressive like that Koda would destroy the leash when she saw it on the table. i just made the lead as fun as possible and she came to love it.
  18. i worked though bite inhibition and now koda has just stopped mouthing on her own (at 15 wks) with me at least. the importaint thing is consistency. for most behaviours we give her a command (like off, or out) or an uh uh.
  19. koda was the same. lucky for me she is play driven like a nut so chasing the ball was enough to make her ignore it. try feeding her with the leash on (in another direction of course) so she has some other importaint distraction.
  20. my mum sent me this. thought i would share it. if you have any other recipes put them up here. PS my spelling is terrible thank god it was a cut and paste job. Prep Time Cook Time Serves 20 mins 30 mins about 36 biscuits Ingredients * 2-3 cups finely chopped/minced fresh parsley * 1/4 cup finely chopped carrot * 1/4 cup grated Mozzarella cheese * 2 tbsp vegetable oil (preferably olive) * 2 3/4 cups wholemeal flour * 2 tbsp unprocessed bran flakes * 2 tsp baking powder * 1/2 -1 cup water Making your very own dog biscuits is fun and only requires a little effort. They make great presents for friends with any breed of dog and they are healthy to boot. With all that parsely your dog's breath will smell just great and there's a stack of Vitamin C and iron there as well! Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180C. Lightly grease 2 baking sheets or put baking paper on them. In a small bowl mix the parsley, carrots, cheese and oil. In another bowl, stir together the flour, bran and baking powder. Add the parsley mixture and stir well. Gradually add 1/2 cup water. Mix well, adding more water if needed to make the dough moist. Knead for 1 minute on a floured surface. Step 2 Roll the dough to 1cm thickness. Using a small dog-bone cookie cutter, or even a glass if you don't have cookie cutters, cut as many shapes as you can, re-rolling the scraps. Put them on the baking sheets. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until biscuits have browned. Cool on a rack. The biscuits will harden as they cool. Store in an airtight (and dogproof) container for up to two months.
  21. i also found walking up and down the toilet area. though now she walks up and down before going. was a very cute pic though. sorry didnt see it first time. hope its going well. and it takes time. koda only got the hang of it at 13 weeks, but we were very thourough from day 1 at 8 weeks.
  22. we found that by making the biggest fuss of koda when she went outside, and then just ignoring her when she had gone inseide then she assosicated being adored with toileting outside. also used toilet commands. she is still having the odd accident, maily with excitement, or the wet weather now, but a lot of progress.
  23. i had/have the same problem. its better than your carpet. try to just make sure she is on grass. use a leash.
  24. i want to change my pups diet from a commercial to home based diet. i will still be keeping her on hills science diet biscuits but want to eliminate the tinned food as i hate the smell of the stuff and i know that most of it is empty calories any way. i use it to "flavour" the biscuits as well as beef it out, cause though she may have reached her energy requirement she is still very hungry. i know that carrot and pumpkin are good veg to use. what others can be added? as well as ratios eg 1 part carrot to 2 pumpkin or whatever? what do you use. and yes, ill still be giving her the odd bone occasionally too. ETA to add science diet is one of the only dry foods that doesn't upset her gut, so cant really change that.
