  1. No flea or tick prevention here, unless we are going on holidays to the coast.
  2. I have a friend that uses one of the cheapie ones for her labrador that sleeps outside at night. Her dog loves it and the only problem she's had is that she can't get her to move off the bed all day and night Personally I would be worried about mine eating the cord :D I'm in Canberra and mine sleep in the lounge. The older one has free reign and a nice snuggly bed, the puppy is in her crate with a blanket. I'm not sure they'd even use a heated bed as they're both medium-coated and don't like getting too hot. The lounge with soft bedding is a nice compromise :D
  3. Haha I can't work out what the dog thinks is happening They don't look skinny to me.
  4. We have an Aussie pup, she is brilliant. However, I would make sure that you make sure you get a puppy with a temperament that suits you and Jet. Our girl is a really full on puppy, full of beans and very boisterous. She has taken a while to learn how to calmly greet and play with other dogs and has been told off many, many times because she gets in a dog's face that doesn't appreciate it. She's smart as a tack, wonderfully well behaved, easy to train, cuddly, loves everyone and everything. I love Aussies. However as I said, make sure you look for a calmer puppy if that's what Jet needs
  5. Satchmo does this too, then I end up late for work because I spend an hour picking grass seeds out of his coat ;)
  6. Sounds like you're doing the right thing to me, too We have had some growls amongst dogs but walking away from both of them has worked after a few days. No pushing in for pats is allowed at our place, the one doing the pushing gets ignored. Maybe try some exercises that teach him that good things happen when Jane is around you... for example having them both next to you and treating them alternately. Giving Jane a pat, then giving him a treat/pat if he acts calmly.
  7. Hrmm.. my puppy's favourite toys... empty toilet rolls, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, pieces of rope, socks, and my older dog
  8. I wouldn't worry too much about this, dogs don't really learn this way. Do you clicker train? If you can reward him at the right moment (a clicker helps with this) I don't think you'll have a problem. They know they're getting rewarded for what they are doing at that point in time, not what was leading up to it. It's the same as when you are leash training - when they hit the end of the leash, wait until they loosen the leash and look back at you - treat. It would be rare for the pup to think that going to the end of the leash gets them a treat
  9. I love the nose sticking out the end - "as long as I can breathe it's ok!"
  10. tez, how are they acting together? Are they just excited and wanting to play constantly? A few things that have helped our puppy and our older dog get along: - taking them for short walks and outings together - making sure they both have their own space (beds, crate, etc) and that they know which is theirs and which is out of bounds - spending 'down time' with both of them, just watching TV or hanging out in the study - supervising their interactions at first, teaching 'gentle' and 'leave' It might take a while for them to feel fully comfortable with each other but they will get there - it's so different for them having another dog in their space all of a sudden
  11. Same  I like my dogs to enjoy their walks, which they don't seem to do if I am too tough with them. However, I also like to enjoy my walks, so no pulling, even if they are out in front.
  12. More suggestions anyone? Thanks for starting this topic as I'm having knee surgery tomorrow so I am wondering how to keep a 5 month old Aussie entertained for a few weeks. OH will walk her but he won't train her, and that's what she needs. Any cool tricks to teach with the clicker, not involving standing/walking? Keep 'em coming
  13. Bearded Collie Puli Tibetan Terrier Standard Poodle Bergamasco Flat Coated Retriever Collie Smooth Greyhound German Shepherd Polish Lowland Sheepdog
  14. Ava was 8kg when she came home at 12 weeks She's now 5 months old and 15kg. The German Shepherd puppy at our puppy school was 25kg at just under 5 months old, and there are a lot of breeds who are bigger than that
  15. If your dog works well for praise I'd definitely use that. In my limited experience, most dogs won't work for praise only Our Aussie pup works ok for praise to a point, but is much better with food. I also teach a lot of commands using a lure so use food for that. Our older mutt looks at us like we're complete idiots if he knows he'll only get praise as a reward (he doesn't work very well WITH food either, but sometimes bbq chicken gets the better of him).
  16. My 5-month-old aussie shepherd pup is in a large crate (36") and she already hits the edges when stretched out - so I agree with others, go the XL for a goldie
  17. My big mutt stalks. Sometimes he actually lies down, waits for them to get within a few metres then pounces For him, it's part of an excitable greeting or invitation for zoomies.
  18. I bought both my crates on ebay and one came with a divider - they usually say in the listing. I think that vebopet.com.au sells dividers as well
  19. Our puppy had terrible manners with other dogs at first, and puppy school didn't help! What did help was controlled greetings with known, well-socialised older dogs. She very quickly learned that jumping on a dog's face was NOT an appropriate way to say hello!
  20. Looks like a Heinz variety to me I have one of those too, I gave up trying to pick breeds a long time ago!
  21. Giant breed puppies grow VERY quickly I'd start with a crate, and yes, one for a fully grown newfie will be huge! You can get ones with dividers in them so that you can make them a more appropriate size while they're young.
  22. ILDD, I'm sure no-one would have issues with you coming along to watch, just turn up and hang around the sidelines! I'm sure the instructors would be happy to chat to you as well Classes are on Sunday from 9am, I'll be there with Ava.
  23. Just a note on this, I called the RSPCA almost a year ago enquiring about the Recall Clinics. They said that they had none planned in the near or not-so-near future and to "keep an eye on the website". They haven't run any since then.
