Some breeds do suit certain names ---> I knew an Italian Greyhound called Flash. A Whippet called Prince. A Dalmatian called Oscar (he was a silly thing). A bitch German Pointer called Diana (like the goddess of hunting). She was a feisty, adventurous lass don't chya know? A GSD called Agat (pronounced: ah-ghat, Polish for Agate). A GSD called Zboj (pronounced: z-boi, Polish for thief). Yesterday I went to the dog park and met a Pug called Chubby, a Labrador called BooBoo , a Staffy called Buddy and various others which I have forgotten. I think its always interesting to find out what people call their dogs. I like the idea of Buddy, because ultimately that is what your dog is! Others along those lines could be: Mate Pal Friend Ally Comrade Words for 'friend' in different languages: Vriend (Afrikaans) Sahib (Arabic) Amicus (Latin) Amigo (Spanish) Mik (Albanian) Bondhu (Bengali) Bandu (Sinhalese) Dost (Persian) Ven (Danish) Venn (Finnish) Philos (Greek) Tomodachi (Japanese) Caraid (Gaelic) Rafiki (Swahili) Barat (Hungarian) Freund(German) Teman Kawan Sahabat Sobat Sobin (all of the above Indonesian) Przyjaciel (Polish) (pronounced: pshy - ya - chel)

Oh by the way, I had been in regular email contact with the breeder. Ever since I told them about the roundworm and what I was using to treat it they haven't replied

As annoying as it is I've found its most effective if you stay outside with the pup UNTIL he/she goes. Yes, sometimes it means waiting up to 10-20 minutes but they do seem to get the idea. My dogs are inside dogs and they hate the cold (like me) and now that they've picked up on the fact that they wont get back inside until they do their business they are surprisingly quick about it.

Thanks Jed. I've read up a lot on roundworm since I first posted. Tricky little buggers aren't they? Went to the vet to get him vaccinated against kennel cough today and she said he was a good weight and seems quite healthy so I'm glad the worms haven't affected him too much. He just seems to have a dull coat but I'm hoping that was affected by his old environment and once he settles in here, get used to the food, gets bathed (waiting until its warmer) etc. it will shine up. Mind you, any help on how to get a shiny coat would be appreciated. Maybe there is something in grooming, I'll have to go have a look. My goodness, the more I learn, the more I realise I have more to learn!

You could add your own little twist to it -> Daemon Daimon Devil Satan Lucifer Marley....hehe have you read 'Marley and Me'? Great dog story. Or perhaps you like the names of Bob Marley's sons? Damian Julian Ziggy Ky-Mani Stephen Rohan God, I have GOT to stop this!

Thanks for your advice ellz. Now I just have to deal with his sensitive skin issues (Not to worry, I have Aloveen conditioner somewhere)

Naming a pup is my favourite part of the whole process (I know I'm a strange one) When I got my recent pup it was between a few French names as I already have Remy so I wanted a name to compliment him. So now I have Jacques and Remy. Others I liked but didn't fit were: Armand Etienne Dax Pascal Jules Thierry Of course the 3 Muskateers are always good names: Athos, Porthos, Aramis I also like Russian names (Boris is the name of my cousin's GSD, and he suits it well.....damn sneaky Russian) Arkady Vladimir Sasha Aleksi Yuri Nikolai [these are all about pronounciation of course!] My favourite series, by William Horwood, called the Wolves of Time has some beautiful names (inspired by cities, mountains, lakes etc. in Europe I believe) Abruzzo Ambato Aragon Baillo Klimt Kobrin Kubrat Lounel Morten Tervicz Torne Umbrio Vollutt You can't go past Greek gods names either. Some chief gods... Apollo Ares Hades Zeus River gods... Acheron Lethe Styx Other heroes/interesting names... Archilles Ajax Adonis Aeolus (anyone remember the Hercules series hehehe?) Alastor Balius Charon Dioscuri Hypnos Icarus Lycus Morpheus Notus Nox Orion Xanthus ...amongst many, many others Mythological creatures give fantastic names: Phoenix, Griffin, Pegasus, Dragon, Imp, Banshee, Ghost/Spook/Phantom, Goblin, Kelpie , Sphinx, Satyr, Seraphim, Elf OMG I'm probably boring you all....

I'm probably overreacting but its never happened to me before and its a shock seeing these disgusting, long things coming out of this tiny pup. I'm just worried about him. First the shock of moving to a new house and state and now this

I got the pup a few days ago. If he did get them as a puppy, then that only means he hasn't been effectively wormed for 5 months!
-
The pup in question is 5 months old. I found out he had roundworm by finding one in his stool. I have another dog but he is wormed with Advocate monthly. I've never had any problems with any sort of worms regarding my old dog (now deceased) and my newer dog (which I've already had a little over a year). He is only 1.9kgs and the worms are horrendous (2 inches +). I took him to the vet as soon as I found one in his stool, he received a worming tablet (Interceptor Spectrum) and I have a follow up tablet to give him in 2 weeks time. However, if as some say, puppies are wormed from 2 weeks of age then I think this is an example of irresponsible breeding. Unless he picked them up in transit (another lady brought him down here via a roadtrip with 3 poodles). I'm really upset about it.

I was just wondering if the breeders out there could answer a few questions for me: a) When do you start treating your pups for worms? b) Which treatment do you use? c) What would you do if you sold a 3-10 month old dog and then the owner got back to you saying the pup had worms? Thank you and regards

I'd like to say thank you to everyone for giving me such great pointers. I've had much more luck with recall lately in the 'outdoors', I've changed the 'come' command to 'hadisuda' (supposedly its Russian for come here, dad used to say it to me all the time so I guess its stuck!) and only say it once. At the beach Remy responds to this very well and he was very good in the forest the other day too - although this might have to do with the fact that the other dogs that came with us are well-known to him. I use it more at the beach because he tends to run after the Koolie girls and wants to explore further while I get left behind because I am only walking! I call 'Remy' to get his attention, then 'hadisuda' (using high pitched voice) and when he runs up he gets a treat (Remy is very food motivated, not so much toy motivated although he has a strange fascination with socks, he tries to pull them off when you put them on). If he comes without me calling I praise him and give him a pat because I want him to know I appreciate him 'checking up' on me. I haven't really had the chance to test this method at agility yet, so updates later. I think I will keep him on the lead at training for the time being. I wish I had some equipment at home because I really think we ought to practice more, not just 1 hour a week. Anyway thats a different subject. I just borrowed 'Dog Training For Dummies' from my local library, so that might help also! LOL Thanks again!

Hey guys, I've recently enrolled Remy (My MinPin) in agility and he's doing really well. Unfortunately he goes nuts when he sees other dogs and just runs up to them and encourages them to start playing. Then my trainer says "Its all about control", well thanks buddy but that isn't helping me solve the problem (no specific advice). My pup listens to me in every other situation, even when he's playing with my partner's dog - he knows when its ok to 'go play' and when to 'come' but this doesn't work when he meets new furkids. He has terrible recall in these situations. I'm keen for any suggestions. Thanks

My Min Pin had no one to learn from but he learnt anyway. Doesn't have very good aim though. Most of the time I have to wash the front left paw *sigh* He's better on grass, he kinda half squats and doesn't get any legs wet thank goodness!
