Thanks for your replies. We have been to two classes and so far they have been good. Ruby loves playing with the other dogs there. It is just basic socialisation though with the vet giving advice on toilet training, desexing, basic obedience skills etc. We are looking at taking Ruby to more formal obedience training classes soon. The next term starts in about 7 weeks so she will be about 16 weeks by then. Is this a good age to start more formal training?

So colormax is safe for dogs? What else is it used for? Can it be only used by dogs?

Thanks for your replies. Georgie-boy- Do you have any photos of Millie as a puppy so I can compare? Jed- Ruby is in my sig. She is a cavalier and has a white muzzle and white/tan cheeks. I did discuss this with my breeder and she said the black should fill in within the next couple of weeks. Does anyone have any thoughts on using kelp? Is it safe for puppies?

Just wondering what your opinions are on leads and harnesses? Which is better? We have always just used a lead on our dogs when I was growing up but I'm concerned it may hurt the dogs neck when they pull. Is a harness & lead better or does the harness pull also and hurt their legs? We are going to start walking our dog as soon as she turns 12 weeks so just wondering in advance.

I'd love to hear replies also beacuse Ruby is doing the exact same thing!

Bellatrix- Lucy is gorgeous too! I love blenheim cavaliers. I think they are soooo cute! Lucy and Ruby look very similar. It will be fun to watch them grow up together How is she settling in? Ruby is developing a real personality now. She is very sweet, gentle and playful.

My puppy is 8 weeks old and still has patches of pink on her nose. My breeder said that was normal and that it would gradually turn all black in the next couple of weeks. Someone else I talked to said that this is not normal and that a puppy's nose should have turned black by 8 weeks old. They suggested I give my puppy kelp vitamins to assist in turning the nose black quicker. When I asked my vet about it tonight she said that our puppy's nose is ok and that it wouldn't get blacker. It would just stay the same as it is now and it wouldn't do the dog any harm. But the person I was talking to earlier said that if my puppy's nose stays pink, it could be prone to skin cancer As you can see I'm getting quite a bit of conflicting advice. Can anyone help? Did anyone else have a puppy with a patchy nose and did it eventually turn balck or remain the same? Has it affected your dog in any way?

We have an 8 week old cavalier puppy called Ruby and I was wondering if you could all help me with some questions? Whats the best type of food to feed her? We are giving her a dry food called Advanced Puppy Plus. This is what the breeder was feeding her so we have continued also. So far she hasn't eaten much of it at all. I'm not sure if she likes it to be honest? We have also been giving her puppy milk as per the breeders instructions. Last night I gave her cooked chicken breast and rice and she loved that. What should a puppy be eating in order to get a balance diet? Is the dry food enough or is it ok to give her some chicken and rice also? What about vegies? What type? I've heard some people give their puppies weetbix. Is this ok for puppies? When can you start feeding them leftovers and which foods are too rich or should be avoided? Also what age do you leave your puppies outside when you go out? Ruby is only very little at the moment but eventually I'd like to leave her outside for short periods when we go shopping etc. At what age would you leave them outside for a whole day i.e. when you go to work? If you do have a little puppy, where do you leave them when you go out? Inside? Outside? Thanks, I look forward to hearing your responses

Introducing "Ruby" She is so gorgeous! I'm in so in love with her already! Her first night at home went really well. She cried for about 10 minutes when we first put her to bed and then was fine for the rest of the night. She woke up twice and we put her out to go to the toilet, then straight back to bed. Last night though, she woke up heaps more and just wanted to play! We have set her bed up in our ensuite so we can see her from our bed. We went out to bunnings today and bought a big wire pen (similiar to a crate). We'll set that up in the ensuite with her bed and newspaper on the floor tonight. It will be more confined so hopefully more comforting for her. She hasn't eaten all that much really. How much are puppies of this age supposed to eat? We have her on an Advanced Puppy Formula. The same one as the breeder was giving her but she doesn't really seem that interested. We went out and got some puppy milk for her and she likes that. What is everyone else feeding their puppies? I'm thinking of cooking up a chicken breast and giving her some rice and vegies too. Will that be ok? She is starting puppy preschool tomorrow! Very soon I know but they won't be having any other classes for the next 6 weeks and I want to start training her as soon as possible. She is very cuddly and loves to sit on your lap and fall asleep. She is sleeping in her bed at my feet at the moment.

Hi, We just picked up our little cavalier king charles puppy on Monday and today I called a couple of puppy preschools to get some info on when classes started. At our local vet their classes start tomorrow so we have booked Ruby in. I just wanted to know from others what to expect? What kinds of things do they do there? Ruby is only 8 weeks old. I would have ideally waited a couple of weeks for her to settle in at home first before taking her but the next course isn't run for 6 weeks and I don't want to wait that long. I guess the earlier they start the better anyway as they can start learning positive behaviours from day one. Does anyone have any experiences with puppy preschools that they'd like to share? Did you and your puppy enjoy them and what did you get out of it?

Thanks for your reply. She is a cavalier king charles spaniel and she is 8 weeks old. We don't have any photos of her yet but I will post some when we pick her up tomorrow  I love the idea of a hot water bottle and a radio. It will remind her of mum and keep her nice and warm. We don't have a crate. What is crate training? I've never heard of a clicker either but I'll have a look at that link you posted. Where is the best place for her to sleep initially? We have a bed set up in the laundry but will she need to be closer to us in the first few weeks? I imagine she will cry alot when she first comes home.

We are picking up our new puppy tomorrow and are getting everything ready for when she comes home. What will we need to make sure she settles in easily? So far we have; Food & water bowls Collar and Lead Name tag engraved with our contact details Bed Brush puppy toys Is there anything else you think we will need? Have we missed anything?
