Don't mention them otherwise you'll break my heart being a true Canon lover I meant WITHIN the Canon range Oh you mean the 1Ds? If only I had the money... yes I'll do the Homer Simpson drooling right now...

Oh sure, what I may have said was overkill, BUT I did say get a good compact first. Seriously, everything I said, as against what was originally asked by LittlePoppet, I answered as the "basic" as against the "regardless of price" model & thus the 5D came to mind. Are you asking whether there's a better high end DSLR? As for the $10k business - well you had better ask LittlePoppet that question Plus you must understand I grew up with a Canon AE-1. So these digital SLRs are a joke to me. Yes everything needs programing these days. All I had was AE - everything else was done by manual. So to me these modern day SLRs are more programing than real photography And the 5D Mk II has a vid cam! Now I'm just envious Having said that, my Canon PowerShot 590 cost me $129. How much does a D5 cost? Of course there are better high end DSLRs than the 5D Don't mention them otherwise you'll break my heart being a true Canon lover Oh I don't doubt the superior quality, but my wallet is rather thin already... Never a truer word spoken

Anyways LittlePoppet, after all this, do you have any idea what you wanna buy?

That's what I read as well. I also agree that photography is, indeed, MUCH more than possessing a top-end camera, and an instruction book . And that's so true
-
It also states: Consequentially I stated a good compact, at the lower end as requested by LittlePoppet, as well as the high end "regardless of price" No argument from me here. Bascially it's called framing & lighting. And holding the camera still doesn't go astray either. Saves on all this IS gear... Actually I disagree. A really good compact teaches the novice everything a DSLR can do (well kinda). Plus you are always left with a videocam! That's something a DSLR can't do

Best advice I've ever heard Now my 5 cents worth LittlePoppet. Start with a compact, but a nice one, then think DSLR. If money isn't an issue, & you know how to program these modern day suckers, get a Canon 5D. If budget is an issue, though, get an Olympus E-30 A 5D for someone who doesn't even have a camera yet? Well I did say "& you know how to program these modern day suckers" I seriously wouldn't recommend buying something like a 5D for your first DSLR, whether money is an issue or not. IMO it would be silly to spend that much on a camera without knowing whether you will take to DSLR photography and enjoy it enough to pursue photography beyond taking photos of friends and family. A basic DSLR will do everything a novice needs (and more) and even if someone loves photography, it would be ages before they'd need to upgrade from a basic camera. As has beens said by many others in the past, the lens makes more difference than the camera body and a good photographer can take amazing photos with the most basic body. Oh Please. Considering it's as much as about programing, than that photography skills, that's pretty harsh. And more to the point LittlePoppet has already stated, in their original posting, that budget isn't an issue. I furthermore stated to get a good compact to start with, along with the hint to learn how to use it to its fullist before they went further. Then I said if "you know how to program these modern day suckers" (with laugh simlie may I add) then get the D5. Well given my experience, I certainly would have bypassed all the cash I wasted, getting to the E-30 I've got, & gone for the top end instead in the first place.

Given the fact I do a lot of photos at local pounds, not to mention of my dogs & that of my mum's (whom I rescued for her), I would demand permission before anything I've photographed was reproduced elsewhere (unless I've send those photos to someone like Dog Rescue Newcastle). It's not overly because I've spent a lot of money on photograph equipment, even though it's been close to $2 000 worth, but it's more so because I put a lot of effort into everything I do, for zero charge for the pounds or here at DOL, as against someone who wants to make a profit out of my hard work (& not to mention the cost of the equipment in the first place).

Oh I'm a camera addict going way back to the age of 5 when my nanna gave me a Kodak brownie. Then, in my teens, I used my dad's old Chinon SLR, & at 21 I got my own Canon AE-1. Remember those? Yes showing my age here I must admit The "old" DSLR was an Olympus E-420. I've used it extensively with my pound work. It was very good, especially when I got the 18-180mm lens. But then I got thinking, thanks to this thread, about getting something better as I had pretty much reached the limits of the camera, so the Olympus E-30 came to mind. That's what I got last Friday. And I'm already impressed by the photos it's taken, especially yesterday at Port Stephens pound, as the E-420 never liked the lighting conditions there, but the E-30 loves them. BTW what's a manual?
-
Well I've got to say, all this talk of new cameras got me stirred up, so I went off & got myself an E30 from eBay. Came all the way from the USA. It arrived late yesterday. I'm still trying to figure out how to use it, but some test shots from this afternoon were pretty impressive. Here's four of my boy Maze in action. I don't think my E420 could have taken the same shots, although it was using the same lense (18-180mm ED), regardless of the fact that I'm rather experienced with the E420 these days...

May I add I just did a quick search at JB Hi Fi & they have the Pentax K-X single lens kit on special, at the moment, for just $777. For a 12MP DSLR that's not a bad price... Here's the link: http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/digital-cam...5mm-lens/467739

Well if I had the money I'd get a Canon 7D. But I'd have to sell my mum, my dogs, & my soul in order to afford one
-
You know you don't have to buy Canon or Nikon - especially if you're on a budget. Yes they're the best, but you also pay for it. There are two other brands well worth considering. There's Olympus & Pentax. I'm not familiar with Pentax, but their stuff is far from rubbish, whilst I own & frequently use an Olympus E-420. And it does some very good photos under far from ideal circumstances. Below are a couple of pics taken today at the local pound without any editing save for size reduction... I got my Olympus at eBay for under $500 & it was only 6 months old at the time. I've seen Pentax DSLRs for less although they aren't as high on the megapixel rating (ie they're in the 6-8 megapixel region). Another brand worth considering is the Sony Alpha series. Again I'm not too familiar with them, but they are worth considering especially if you're on a budget.

Just want to say being "not to type. Long and leggy" really means she's from "working stock" & not "show stock" origins. It's just the way the breed has developed, over the last few decades, depending upon what they're bred for (if you know what I mean). Overall, though, it hardly matters. Afterall cattledogs are cattledogs... BTW good luck finding her a home. She sounds like a very nice girl -
Very good idea. At least it'll make Sasha's death worth something meaningful.
-
Although she wasn't my dog, I just couldn't let her die, under such sad & tragic circumstances, without at least ensuring that she won't die completely forgotten. Sasha was a surrender to Kurri Kurri pound last Sunday 25 Oct. She had had a litter, only a few weeks earlier, but the new mum had rejected her pups. Her owners felt they had little choice other than to surrender her as a result. I saw her on Tuesday 27 Oct & found her to be very friendly, affectionate, & well behaved. Why she had rejected her pups I simply don't know, as she showed no signs whatsoever that she would make for a bad mother. Alas, having had her pups, unbeknownst to everyone, she had gotten a really bad infection in her uterus which the pound staff discovered on Wednesday morning (28 Oct). The pound took her to the vets who said it'd cost over $2000 for treatment which they were far from convinced would be successful. So having little alternative, they PTS Sasha. Poor girl. Such a sad ending to what was already a tragic story. RIP girl Here's some of the photos I took of her on Tuesday... a very pretty girl. It's such a shame she is no longer with us

OMG, how fascinating. Video please. Oh I'd love to video it, but she just does it whenever. So unless I've got the compact camera out, which is very rare to top it off, it's kind of mission impossible with my Alice... :D
-
Well if you do ever steal Alice, don't forget you need a very large supply of wooden spoons & kitchen sponges! :p
-
Thanks Joel. Yeah Alice is a cutie alrighty. Just ask Ravyk Another tip about picking a dingo is watching their ankle movements. If the girl can swivel her legs in her ankles @ 180 degrees, then yes that's a dingo or cross for certain as dogs can't do that. Alice does it & it's just amazing to see.
-
I've actually got a dingo cross called Alice. Yet from the pictures you've shown here Joel, we'll there maybe some resemblance to a dingo, but to be honest I think red cattledog x kelpie is closer to what your dog is. Plus, don't forget, a lot of people think there's dingo in kelpies, even though there's not, as there is some resemblance shared between the two, whilst cattledogs actually have dingo in them, so the red ones in particular can remind one of a dingo. BTW is there any chance for better photos as that may help. Most importantly good luck looking after her as she seems like a nice girl who deserves a second chance Anyways, just for comparison, here's Alice...

Here I am, somewhere behind Maze...
