thanks. for us getting her desexed wasnt even a question. before she even comes on heat would be best for us so we can be sure she will never get pregnant. we asked our breeder if she would desex her before we picked her up as we have to sign a desexing contract and we were even happy to pay for the operation but like you pointed out she is just too small to have such a large operation done so young. we get how small she is because when charlie (the male chi) was desexed in december he only needed 1 stitch!!!!!)

sorry i should add WE DO NOT WANT HER TO HAVE PUPPIES. just read my message back and that wasnt clear. when i meant cycle i just meant let her stay on heat without having babies.

i know this is probably a silly question and i should have asked the vey but we are picking up our new female chihuahau molly next friday and are looking at getting desexed as soon as possible. our breeder has said she wont be ready to be desexed until approx 6 months old. but i have been reading and does she need to have one "cycle" before she is desexed as i have read conflicting information. we do not want dogs jumping the fence to get to her and our 12 month old desexed male chihuahaua would this confuse him or would he just not know whats going on? we would prefer to have her desexed before this cycle if it is appropriate. any advice would be great. and when will she have her first cycle? cheers we are so excited to pick her up next friday!!!!

Should Food Be Avaliable All The Time?
charlies_mum replied to charlies_mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
hi everyone well last night i swear charlie can understand human language because i told him that i was going to take it away in 15 minutes ( i even set the timer on the oven!) and lo and behold charlie ate his whole dinner!!!! well he got plenty of praise for that. and this morning he ate about half of what i put out so the rest went away and will be offered with more tonight. i felt so bad taking it away because he just looked up at me with those beautiful chihuahua eyes so we are off to a good start thanks again for your advice i definetly dont want charlie to eat so much his tummy expands up into his mouth!!! you have scared me into staying on this thanks again -

thanks for your help everyone. charlie is going to get the shock of his life tonight when i take his food away. i am a dietitian so i deal with parents who have spoilt children who wont eat what is put in front of them, i dont have this problem with my kids but with charlie i have been so soft i think it is because he is so small. not any more. its a new day charlie. MUM and DAD are the boss. i will let you know how it goes cheers again -
Should Food Be Avaliable All The Time?

i would love it if charlie had a better appetite. i had a red kelpie when we were growing up and he always wolfed down his food. we are getting a new chihuahua puppy in 2 weeks so maybe that will make him eat it in one sitting so she cant get it later...i hope she has a good appetitie thanks everyone -
hi everyone my 12 month old chihuahua charlie has never been all that hot on food. he is now fully grown and the vet is happy with his weight which has been stable for sometime. my question is is it ok if we leave food out for him all the time? he barely eats anything (i know chis dont need much) but he isnt a piggy dog and has amazing self discipline an example of this is when we have a leg of lamb (his favourite) if we give him more and more he only eats until he is full. i am just worried that if we use the 15 minute rule and then take the food away he will start to lose weight as he tends to graze all day. we tried the 15 minute rule when he was a puppy and it worked in that he ate some as soon as it was put down but only a tiny amount and then he would leave it. please help.

hi everyone i asked a question yesterday and got such a great response so please excuse if this is a stupid question as we have never owned more than one dog before. do we put the two dogs together to sleep at nighttime currently charlie our 12month old chi sleeps in his soft box crate thing near our room but our new puppy who we are picking up in two weeks will be sleeping in the puppy pen with her bed and kennel just like charlie did so that if she needs the toilet in ana emergency there is always a training pad in there for her. so should charlie sleep in there with her if they get along? and is it common for dogs to not get along? and finally as they come from the same mother and father (just different litters) will they know each other? thanks for your help please dont think im stupid just naive and we want to do the best we can for our beloved dogs

Help! Introducing New Chi Puppy To Very Spoilt Dog
charlies_mum replied to charlies_mum's topic in Puppy Chat
thanks everyone for your help. i wont have any trouble giving charlie all the attention he wants as i am just so in love with him and his beautiful personality. can anyone help me out with the question about taking him to his breeders house to pick up the new pup? cheers -
hi everyone our very spoilt male chihuahua charlie (who celebrated his first birthday yesterday) is about to get a baby sister, a chihuahua from the same mother and father charlie came from. charlie is desexed but he gets quite jealous if other dogs come up to me or my husband. we dont have children so charlie has been our only "baby" for 12months. my question is how do we introduce the two puppys? is it better to take charlie back to the breeders when we pick up milly or is it better not to remind him where he came from will this mean he will miss his mum all over again if he meets her again? and charlie normally spends the day outside if we are at work so should i seperate them and keep her inside in her puppy pen especially since its winter. and what are the best ways to introduce them so they get along well because that is why we are wanting a second dog so charlie can have a playmate so we really want them to get along. also she will be going to the same puppy school as charlie and the trainer there has said charlie is welcome to come back with her should we take him too? any advice will be greatly accepted cheers
