Gday everyone My agility instructor told me once I learn contacts I can go up a class! I have a few questions concerning training this and the different methods. I was shown last night using just a plank on the ground and getting my dog to walk onto it. I was told I had to chose which method I wanted, either 2on2off or drop etc. Can anyone tell me which is the better method…or does it depend on your dog? At my agility club we are training without any verbal signals and after watching Susan garrets weave dvd last night I can see why this method is used – to get the dog to think for itself… but I am wondering if this is suitable for every type of dog? Say if I wanted drop, can I tell him drop and few times and then see if he will do it himself without me saying anything or does this defeat the purpose and will I have a dog that will never “do things for himself”….? Any ideas/help would be great! I need to vent as well…last night when I was teaching contacts in class a lady let her dog come right up to my dog in the middle of training…..what is WRONG with some people!! So frustrating….if they can’t understand that you shouldn’t do that to people/dogs then they shouldn’t be training!!...ah that feels better…the worst thing is the instructors allow it to happen!!!

LOL  thanks Kavik, you love that cleanrun site dont you! -
I thought they would have been pretty much the same thing? I want him to play with me, and use play as a reward for training.

thanks for the suggestions! I dont know how i would go with the 2x2 method... looks difficult! I just dont get why you would start off just having the dog run between two poles?..... The slanted way looks easier to train...not that i have ever seen the 2x2 method done before

Hi everyone, I have a 19 month old rough collie who Im starting out doing agility with. As a pup I taught him play drive but now that he is older I dont think I taught him quite as good as I had hoped for. He likes to play with me with his tug toy etc but quickly "gets over it". One minute he will go silly wanting his tug toy but after a bit of training when I get it out to play again he will just ignore it! My partners German Shepherd has ALOT of play drive and would play 24/7 if you let him. I'm wondering if I would be able to "re-train" his play drive to the way I want it?....as in would play all day. Sometimes I wonder if it's his breed....? All the dogs at my agility club are mostly Aussie shepherds with the play drive I am after. Maybe I am asking too much of him and just have to keep his lessions short? I guess what im asking is .... Is there anyway I can "re-train" him to love his toy 24/7? Or is it too late? Or is it his breed? To save some time I have done things such as: *Tugging and whenever he tugs I tell him yes and let him have the toy *Getting him to "find it" to make it fun... i usually hide it behind me *Taking the toy out only for 1 minute ... then I take it away when he ready wants it. *I play with the toy with my partner so he see's that we are having heaps of fun with it....then we give it to him when he tries hard to get it off us. *I never leave the toy in the backyard for him to play by himself....the toy is strickly with me only. No other toys/tugs are left in the backyard.

Wanting to purchase weave poles but unsure of which type i should get. My dog knows how to weave (just) but am looking to "re-train" him alittle better at how to enter the weaves from different directions etc. I would prefer the ones on a base that can be adjusted by angle but how am I to know if they are good enough quality etc? When you adjust the angle each weave is on, has anyone had problem with them not holding and falling? I have a big dog who knocks around the weaves pretty hard. I would also like ones that are pretty flexible. I have seen these ones on airdogs website. Anyone got these ones or can recommend some weaves? http://airdogs.com.au/agility/home.php?cat=252

Thanks everyone for your comments! I think I will go to two agility clubs, its a good idea and seems to be working well for you guys! I go to WAAG Agility in Southport. Which Agility club in the GC do you go to mntgood? Do they have a website? Yeh I know foundations are important especially rear end awareness which we are working on and he is getting better at. I guess I will just wait it out and see what happens, Im in no rush anyway. I just really want to learn the foundations of weaving/jumping and the other obstacles but maybe we will in the coming weeks. I have found a weaving DVD on http://airdogs.com.au which I deff will get, looks good!

I am doing agility class at the moment but find once a week just isnt enough. Does anyone here go to two agility clubs and train twice a week with different people? I am also finding that im not getting as much attention as the other people in my beginners class because im alot more advanced than them. I have had my instructor say I am ready to go up a class but another instructor say im not. I feel I am ready, the only thing i need work on is rear end awareness with the use of ladders on the ground etc. Most other people in my class dont even have the basics such a "sit" and "stay". Any advice? The things we are doing in class at the moment are: Basic Sit and stay with recalls etc Going through tunnels Jumping small jumps Rear end awareness My instructor also got me to show her If i could do a stay, walk away, then come back around the back of the dog and back into the heel position which I could do. She also wanted me to show her If i could get my dog to jump up on the table and lie down which I could also do. Here is a clip from my backyard training on youtube of what i can do: Do you guys think I should be staying in beginners class?

So so tragic, It brings a tear to my eye when i read through the Dogs Victoria Members Impact list. I have just moved from Victoria to QLD and am missing victoria because of the way they care about each other, especially when things like this happen. Everyone here should be so proud to be Victorians!!! Keep up the great work and keep fighting! Rest in Peace Canawindra GSPs!

Am in agility classes at the moment training rear end awareness. I was told by my instructor that to train him i need to wait for him to offer the movement of actually putting his front feet on the square board and then once he can do this i need to wait for him to offer the movement of his rear (of corse rewarding when done right)....is this how it should be done? Shouldnt I give a command? Im a lil confused, if anyone could offer some advice it would be great!

How Good Is A Dog's Eyesight?
Heidii replied to Garden Girl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
this has happened to myself and my partner with his german shepherd. Only once i have spoken he recognises me or him. We just laught at off and call him a silly dog! -
Only reason for changing is cos its such a pain have to freeze raw meat in portions then unfreeze it etc (and then sometimes i forget to take it out the freezer) and my dog doesnt even really like it that much anyway. Just thought it might be easier for me, but i still want to give him a good diet.
-
I have a 15 month old Collie. Since a baby, i have been feeding him on mainly a raw diet. His main meals are a mix of raw beef, couple of chunks of beef heart, pasta, rice, vegies, tinned fish every now and then and supercoat dry food. I have decided i want to change his diet a bit and start adding tinned dog food in replacement of the beef, pasta, veg etc. I am just wondering what the best dog tinned food would be. I gave him a bit of Pal once and he loved it as well as Optimum. I have read it's best to give your dog what they do well on but how to you know if he does well on one food over another? All i know is he just loves/goes crazy over tinned food rather than the mince meat. any suggestion? Thanks
