  1. Never fear there are some terrible dogs especially on your first night. Some of the worst are the loveing lab puppies there are about 4 around at present they are so devious. Some of the worst are the shepherds and a great dane. No one minds they just want to help
  2. cliffandmandy you should watch my class - the little whippet - bronwn and white with a blue/grey camo coat. there are some terrible dogs. the golden lab is the worst handled by a guy. poor guy. the class that my black and white is in seems a little better. come and say hi - the whippets are us
  3. he he the best thing about Ballinger is there are lots of dogs worse than yours
  4. i am an emergency doctor on shift work and haven't had any trouble with this course the improvement in my dogs is just huge and wonderful
  5. Hi I know the feeling Big recommendation for the Sunshine coast obedience club they are awesome - $70 for 8 lessons - Ballinger Rd - Signs on side of road to direct I am currently half way through their beginners course and it has worked wonders with my dogs First lesson is theory then 7 practical and a demo Every monday night between 1845- 1915 I expect they are about to take names for their next course as they run them every 4 weeks We had heaps sign up with us but you are split up into small groups of approx 8 They also give individual help with dogs during the classes if you are having trouble They do recommend that it is the same person every week and not for kids - however if you alternate with a partner they dont mind too much If you have 2 dogs they put them in separate classes - been great for us Some of the instructors have some good titles in obedience Can't speak highly enough of them Purely run by volunteers Once you have done the beginner course you can do an intermediate course and also participate in the agility and flyball run on different times PM me if you want further info Ring - 0404 360 003 If you do end up coming I have the 2 whippets in jackets up there Can also recommend another lady by the name of Jenny who lives in Caloundra - she does a lot of work with dogs using Cesar millan theories and I have rave reviews about her and taming a lab pup. I didn't have a good experience with the K9 centre - good trainer but bit expensive - would only really recommend it if you have serious issues with your dog
  6. i actually don't mind the pack leader by sporn - there is a good quality collar and a strap that can go over the nose from the collar - it deters my whippet from pulling like a mini-freight train then once she settles on a walk i can slip off the nose band and just use the collar - if she resorts back despite gentle corrections i can slip it back nice and padded and she cannot escape also this is the website; http://www.sporn.com/cgi-bin/commerce.exe?...ion&key=SPU if you want any better pic's i can take some of my whippet wearing it
  7. BIG THUMBS UP for hound house love them Light easily demountable, up off the ground, clean, warm and even woosy whippets love them
  8. Can sympathize with a 2 yo whippet, coat is so so glossy yet still bad dandruff. Gets sardines, omega oil supplement, skin Greenpet supplement + BARF and still has dandruff. GRRRR
  9. Hi Great to hear My 2 are embarrassing me in the beginner class The baby 12 mo whippet - dug her paws in and wouldn't walk half way through the class - had to pick her up under my arm and march her across in front of 4 classes and change her collar, then dragged her back. TOAD My partner was in another class and the 2 yo whippet feigned not knowing how to sit. She was not putting her precious little toosh on the ground. He got in trouble. So embarrassing. they have been getting a thorough work out this week 5min 2x per day. They did look really good in their little jackets - made the babies in a morning on the Sunday - looked really good. Can't wait to start the fun stuff
  10. I have also tried the Sporn pack leader halter - works very nicely Very gentle tug similar to when working on horse back and asking for movements. She responds very well Had a little tanty at first but soon was trotting on a loose lead next to my leg - it felt so so so nice to walk her
  11. WOOOO HOOO my 9kg freight train has been contained. tried the sporn harness for the first time today. Worked wonderfully, instantaneous and she didnt mind wearing it. HOWEVER one minor fall back. They have the freedom of their heads so can sniff. If you don't mind this then don't worry. i fixed this by using the end of her lead looped over her head just to correct any sniffing or if she goes in the wrong direction so that i am not using the harness to pull on her just stop her pulling me. also it definately didn't impair her zoomies - she is a whippet- we chased the ibis with no problems
  12. One other thing: Leave it at least 12 hours to soak. But dont leave for more than 48hours or it grows really fantastic fungus. I have become quite accomplished at this.
  13. Complete Mix - puppy (1-2) years - 30kg = 275gm of VAN + 275 water + 850 raw meat However this is for 2-3 meals I have 2 whippets - 8 kg + 12 kg - I feed the 10kg level = 100gm VAN over 3 meals I have also heard suggestion from other DOL'ers that you can mix the VAN with meat +/- offal, sardines, etc and then freeze the lot in individual portions 1kg costs ~$10, cheaper in bigger packets I can have a look at the adult one next time I go to the pet food place if you need I can second that Petstock stock this stuff, have seeen it in there while stickybeaking at all the stuff
  14. Just wondering has any one given the skin allergy diet a go - Allerblend, omega + skin supplement. I have a whippet who struggles with the terrible tummy itch and rash. Just wondering about this. I am currently doing a combo of Vitalife hypoallegenic - roo meal based + diced meat for breakkie, with VAN + what ever I have either chicken or roo/beef. The vet we use recommended Lamb as the least allergenic ??? I have a pup as well and I feed her 2x what I feed the allergic one b/c she is one of these nervous burns lots of energy type and I saw she was a bit more bony than a whippet should be.
  15. I tried Bonnie with one of the worlds fussiest dogs, a whippet and she scoffs it down no problem. Really cheap too - unfortunately I noted her skin allergy got worse but her coat looked good and it put a little weight on my pup who just seems to be a skeleton no matter how much I feed. Have been using Vitalife by Petco - AUSTRALIAN MADE OWNED etc. really good quality and the dogs will eat it dry - OMG. No preservatives, no rice, main ingrediant is Roo meal. Unfortunately the local pet food place isn't stocking it any longer so contemplating going to a raw diet with Vets all natural - they really love this stuff. They are only a little bit spoilt BIG THUMBS UP FOR BONNIE - complete and puppy
  16. Training wise we did some formal obedience classes and I used treats to keep her next to me, also tried correcting her when she moves infront of me, works some of the time, but she consistently pulls
  17. I am interested Though I have to very air headed whippets who sometimes will get a ball for me. But they would love the hurdles Am more interested in the agility side of things Is there actually a Sunshine Coast Obedience Club ????
  18. Hi all I have an 11mo whippet girl who just insists on pulling me the whole way through our walk. I have worked with her since I got her because of anxiety issues but this one problem has me beat. I was using a whippet collar high up she still pulls, check rope (soft I made for her) - nup. She has a halti and doesn't pull but she hates it. Her sister 24 mo whippet was a champion puller but got the idea really quick with a check chain, couple of corrections and she walks like a dream until a bush turkey or water dragon comes to tease her Was thinking of using the infin8 or newtrix collars but I am not sure she is only 8 kg of skin bone and muscle and very fine
  19. I have found another really really good food that is cheap - VITALIFE - by Petco Aus - they make enduro. No wheat, beef, chicken, etc. Can't remember the exact ingrediants as I am at work First ingrediant is - roo meal I have a whippet with really really really bad ?grass contact allergy + fusspot - she eats its it and her coat is gorgeous and the allergy seems to have improved somewhat. PM me if interested Price 1.5kg for $10 - lasts me 3 weeks with 2 whippets, and one is a pup - the pup also looks great
  20. TLC Pet foods - Yandina on the Sunshine coast Cheap pet meat and Bonnie puppy Owned by locals not a chain - added bonus
  21. HELP My 10mo whippet is set on destroying everything - she destroys cheap dog toys in minutes, took 2 hours today to defluff a Tuffies toy ( Scale 7 ), raids my sock draw every so often - in the last 2 hours have rescues 10 socks, eaten a patio setting chair (well chewed the edges), widened the enterance to her hound house, eaten multiple beds incl pet futon, the list goes on incl shoes etc She intially had a bit of chewing but we put it down to puppy stuff. But in the last 2-3 weeks she has gone mad with the chewing thing. They get at least an hours walk a day we aim for 7 days but minimum 5. Have just had an epiphany and given her some cheese in a Kong - so they are being destroyed well trying anyway Any whippet proof toys available - she does enjoy the cardboard out of toilet rolls and paper towel but they make huge mess
  22. I sympathise with all those "itchy dog" owners out there. I have a 23 mo whippet with what I think is a contact grass allergy. EPO helps but have currently run out and she is a mess - red raw on her chest with no hair from her chin to her tummy. Have eliminated fleas - checked every day and there haven't been any around I can't use top spot flea treatments - they cause her agony with itch Any other food recommendations for the worlds fussiest whippet - even starving her to make her eat it doesn't work Wont eat - RC, Euk, Supercoat,EP Will eat - orijen (now gone), Vitalife (makers of Enduro for allergy prone dogs), Bonnie complete Have switched her over to Bonnie but allergies are making us so frustrated - will be getting the Vitalife back - main ingrediant is roo meal, no wheat, can't remember the rest lots of fresh meat and bones Am contemplating VAN
  23. my pup has bald patches - they initially looked like horrible sores grrrr All up to date with heartworm
  24. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of dogs being bitten by mozzies. I have 2 whippets who sleep on the back porch at night under blankies and a rug if it is cold. However have noted recently that they have both been covered in sores on their backs especially the pup (9mo) she has bald patches and had a huge sore about a 20 cent piece on her side at the moment. They seem to really annoy my older dog and be itchy. Nasty little things Any suggestions Please help Have been using sentinel spectrum + capstar for fleas - am about to switch to Advocate Have found the older dog has lots of allergies incl ? grass allergy and gets bad eczema on her chest - EPO shampoo works well but she is still bald there. And whippets don't have much hair to start with. Has anyone ever heard of dogs having contact allergy to Advantix or Frontline Plus - cause these used to really annoy her prior to sentinel.
  25. Hi I tried: RC medium dog - wouldn't touch it Supercoat - wouldn't eat it Orijen - loved it but........ Vitalife allergy one - cheap no wheat (made by Enduro so AUSTRALIAN Made) main ingredient - kangaroo meal - did well Now using Bonnie Complete and Bonnie Puppy for the worlds fussiest whippets - look good, great poo's minimal farting. Not to mention very cheap.
