My friend has a Jack Russell who is about 8 years old and quite over weight. He is now in hospital suffering pancreatitis. he was fed part of a chicken frame the night before the attack occured. Her vet has told her that this would have been the cause of his illness. I have often wondered about chicken frames and the chances of pancreatitis due to the high content of fat on a frame. I currently feed my GSD chicken frames several times week. I do cut the exess fat off them. Has anyone heard of this before and should I be concerned about feeding my girl too many frames? I must admit I do find them handy as they are readily accessable and cheap but i wouldnt like to jeapordise her health either.

I have a question regarding how to teach my dog to tie up. Seems simple enough, but somehow it is not someting that I have managed very succesfully A bit of background. I have a 2 year old GSD who as a puppy suffered quite a bit of seperation anxiety. She would jump the fence if I was on the other side of it and if I left her anywhere would scream and scream like she was being murdered. We have dealt with this to some extent and I can happily leave her in the backyard etc and she is generaly quiet. When we are out somewhere unfamiliar, it is a different story. She is normaly a 'vocal' dog who isnt shy of voicing her own opinions, but she really screams like I am torturing her. I cant tie her up anywhere without her screaming blue murder. It is so bad that I must admit I have kind of avoided the issue. I dont generaly have a need to tie her up so dont. If anyone saw us at kepala at the Dec meet you would know what I am talking about. I tied her up next to my chair during lunch and went to get some food. I was maybe 10 meters away were she could see me. Well did she carry on, it was most embarrasing. But when I went back to her she was so anxious she was jumping up on me clawing (which she never does) and screaming louder. She was almost shaking she was so stressed. Like she thought she was being left behind. I hate to see her like that. I have tried TOT which she responded well to, but she is comfortable at home and doesnt cry as much when tied up, it is only if I take her somewhere else. I have also tried tying her up for short spaces of time to get her used to it. The problem is she never relaxes and I think she would scream for an hour so it just teaches her that screaming gets her what she wants. I would really appreciete other thoughts on how to deal with this. While I dont really tie her up much, it would be good if i could should the need arrise.

I second the electric fence as an option. My GSD was a shocking fence jumper, but only when I was home, never if i wasnt there. She would jump the fence to get to me if I left her in the yard and went to see the horses for example. At wits end an electric fence system was installed with the white tape. She zapped herself once and never jumpled that fence again. If I needed to deter her from going over another fence a string of white tape is all it took. The unit was turned off on the second day with only the tape left up. I will add the reason I needed to stop the fence jumping as when she found me the little bugger would then run of into the neighbours property. we were going through recall issues then Good luck with sorting this problem out Jessca.

My dog is 33kg, do you then reccomend I feed her 3000mg fish oil per day. At the moment I am only giving her 100mg I am also giving her 2 EPO tablets per day (2000mg) she was on one but have recenlty swtiched to 2. What would be a good dosage? Sorry about all the questions

Using Fetch And A Tennis Ball As A Reward
laeral replied to Luke W's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Have you tried an Orbee Luke? You could use it as a tug or a ball. Doh posted at the same time. -
Yes. I used one to train my dog from chasing ducks

emmark, I haven't given a penicillin injection to a dog before, but I have given heaps to horses I know with the larger horses and needles it was easier but for a pony I have had difficulties. When you stick the needle in draw back the needle a little before trying to syringe the penicillin in. I would definitely ask for your vets advice though if you are still having difficulties, especially since my advice comes from horse experience

Let me know what you think of the program, but Im sure its good. I have been building her drive for the last few days with her orbee that she loves. She has learnt though that if she does the body slam she can off balance me and grab the orbbe I have now learnt to throw in some running as well as the spinning, keeps her excited and it helps with getting dizzy to.

Sorry OT but did anyone notice there is a poultry attack listed

Yes that's basically what I'm asking thanks.

Thanks Erny, I wasn't sure about the e-collar. It certainly doesn't seem to have suppressed her prey drive! In fact I do remember Steve saying I could use the collar during drive training. I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I'm training in drive and only training in drive, do you then expect the dog to be in drive every time you want it to do something. I don't understand how that works, if my dog expects a prey reward for say dropping, how can I provide that all the time. I mean there are times when I need her to be quiet and just drop, or I dont have a prey toy with me. I should say I'm talking about basic obedience here as I don't compete or anything. Does that make sense? Kavik I think the local trainer here would freak if I got my dog all riled up to do drive training. Its treats, treats and more treats. I do think she would like your idea of spitting food though

Oooookay.... This may be little long winded, and confusing, and maybe more than a little stupid but I will ask anyway I attended the Training In Drive workshop in Melb last year by K9 force and Pro-K9. Which was excellent by the way, I got so many ideas from it and left feeling all inspired. As fate would have it I not long after purchased an e collar. As there was some immediate issues I had to address with my dog I decided to do this with the e collar before I started training in drive. Long story. And before anyone asks I was following K9 forces program for my e collar. I am now at the stage where I would like to re look at drive training. I have read the other thread, read my notes and refreshed my memory. But I am having a bit of confusion that I'm hoping someone can help me with. My dog seems to have a high prey drive. She will chase anything that moves As chasing some things is definitely NOT OK i.e sheep, chickens. I have been working over the last while trying to train her not to chase these things. As I have been actively trying to suppress her prey drive in regards to these animals have i effectively made it harder to now attempt to train her using prey drive? She still seems to have plenty of drive. She goes nuts for the orbee when we play and will chase things if I am not there to instruct her otherwise. Second question. I'm trying to work out how to incorporate drive training into her training program. I get that you should use two sets of commands when training, one for drive and one for other so she will know when to expect to receive a prey reward and when to except another reward, praise etc. But in the other thread I think someone said that taking to Obedience school can have implications down the track as it teaches the dog to suppress prey drive. So if Obedience training is not good for drive training how do you continue to teach your dog basic manners and obedience. Does this make sense? I guess what I'm saying is that my girl is still requiring basic training and we haven't finished her e collar training, I still have to build her distractions and proof her off it, and I would still like to take her to obedience as she needs to learn to behave amidst distractions. So should I finish this before I start drive training or can you do them at the same time. If I can do them at the same time, how do I make sure I don't lower her drive through this other training? Anyone else confused, I think I just confused myself again. I know this is probably simple but I cant get my head around it.

E-collar Training In Perth
laeral replied to sandgrubber's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think you need to teach your dogs recall... If your not the best thing that ever happened to them, they're not going to come back... especially not if you 'shock' them... They need to be taught recall before you use the device... Well... I think.. Big Ben I use my e-collar as a tool to help train my dog reliable recall. Yes I had tried other avenues first but if I had known what I now know about e-collars, I would have got one alot sooner. I think you may not have seen someone actualy use an e-collar, or you would not make such a statement. I do not 'shock' my dog with the collar, it is used at a very low setting and is more like the tingly feeling you get from dragging your feet on carpet. With proper training and time the e-collar had been an invaluable tool to communicate with my dog. Like Rubyroo, my dog lives on a property and I discovered that at a young age she had a desire to chase chickens, kanagroos and probably sheep. With the use of the e-collar she now has a very reliable recall, and I am able to curb her desire to chase things. She can go everywhere with me and is a much happier and relaxed dog. ETA - Rubyroo, having been in your situation I would highly recommend giving K9 Force a call and going over their distance learning package. Steve helped me so much with my girl. E-collars can really make a difference if used properly. -
E-collar Training In Perth
laeral replied to sandgrubber's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I tried an Innotek one on my GSD but found it to a little hard to get reliable contact through her thick fur. I then purchased a Dogtra one and found it a better choice for my dog. -
I was wondering if anyone knew if Hills Science Diet is irradiated. I ask this as my mum feeds this to her cat and is concerned. Sorry not dog related but any info would be appreciated.

My dog will eat fur, head and all when she catches a rabbit :p I dragged her out of a bush one day and she had a rabbit dangling out of her mouth, well the back legs anyway Like Erny I worry if they have diseases.

rice & mats? Im assuming you mean rats and mice? I have never given rats or mice to my dog. I dont think I could bring myself to give her live animals to eat. I think if she caught one herself she would eat it though.

Perfect Recall Training Using Ecollar
laeral replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well done! Mica is doing well. I wouldnt say we are up to maximum distraction level yet, due to my laziness I guess. She can go all over the property with me, confidently off lead, in fact she doesnt even seem to have the urge to wander any more. She comes camping and to friends BBQs, around other dogs off lead and is perfectly behaved. I no longer have to use stims unless there is a distraction but getting there. She no longer harasses geese, or ducks in a dam The other day at the park in town we were doing some off lead training, 2 small fluffies came running at her all attitude. Mica ran at them as she normaly does, but stopped short and came back when i called her so Im pretty happy about that. Strange dogs were at the high end of her distraction level. Oh and her recalls are generally running to me fast and keen. I still cant get any reliability around echidnas But all in all, shes happier and Im happier! -
Ah I see

I thought it was 2-3% of your dogs weight? Having said that Mica used to eat more than that, more like 4%, she was growing, active and hungry all the time. She used to be fed 1.2kg a day, but she eats vegies as well, so not sure how that translates to a prey model. At the moment she eats about 800g as shes older and not as hungry. She weighs 33kg Raven you could also throw in some 'bigger' bones such as lamb necks, lamb flaps, gives him something to chew on and is good for his teeth especialy as he is a bigger pup. Do you give him any offal such as liver? ETA "Feed all the dog can eat and when he's giving you that "couldn't fit another thing in" look and/or 'stashing' his food for 'later', you know your dog's capacity"
-
I use sardines as well. My girl LOVES them. She gets them once a week As for the chicken livers. I feed offal twice a week, liver or kidneys, she gets it with vegie slops or some mince. Adds up to about 10% of her weekly amount. Personaly I find it completely disgusting and do my best not to breathe in to much when preparing it ;) Lucky I care so much and give it to her anyway

I have farty pants Staffords. Say no more

I feed with vegies and definitely dont get soft poos. Mica does very well on them
