Making Some Liver/meat Treats?
Dackel replied to glendabenda's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
hi, I don't have a dehydrator but simply made liver treats by slicing the liver in small stips, place them on crease proof paper and put them in the oven first on high and then low to dry them out. I also made chicken strips that way. Kitty and dog both love it. Cheers Petra ad Felix -
Hi, Types of Warts in Dogs Overview There are two types of warts which can occur in dogs. The first type occurs mainly in older dogs, and they develop as a result of a weakened immune system. The second type of wart occurs from the canine papilloma virus; these warts generally develop in younger dogs. Pet owners do not have to be concerned about becoming infected with warts from their dogs. Types of Warts Warts that occur in older dogs can occur anywhere on the body, though they tend to develop more often around the toes and on the abdomen. These warts can start out small and stay small, or they can grow overtime; these warts are not contagious to other dogs. The warts generally do not tend to be removed unless they are causing the dog discomfort. For example, a wart growing between the toe pads that makes walking uncomfortable. While these warts are usually harmless, they can start to become infected or even turn cancerous. If you notice a wart on your older dog, it is a good idea to watch the wart closely. If the wart begins to grow, changes shape, or becomes infected, have your veterinarian look at the wart to determine if it needs to be removed. Warts that occur in younger dogs from the canine papilloma virus normally occur in clusters around the mouth, tongue, or muzzle. They often have a ‘cauliflower’ type appearance, and they are usually pink in color. These warts are spread between dogs through physical contact. Younger dogs usually spread the virus through licking and greeting one another. The reason younger dogs develop warts if they come into contact with the virus is because of their growing immune system; their young immune system rises to defend the virus, and the warts develop as a response. These warts will often disappear without treatment, but if the warts interfere with eating and drinking, or they become infected, they will need to be removed The easiest way to remove a wart is with liguid nitrogen which freezes the wart and falls of after a while. Ask your Vet. Don't use any human wart treatments please, as the surrounding skin can get damaged. Good luck Petra and Felix

Hi, I'm pretty certain that my Dachsie Felix has earmites as I have already removed a small amount of redishbrown debris. The ear does not smell or is inflamed. He shakes his head and loves when I massage his ear. There is no infection as I treated with AB drops already. I tried to drown the little buggers with olive oil but because of their life cycle was unsuccessful. Vet appointment? Suggestions would be much appreciated. I usually have Felix on Advocate but giving it a break for a while. He is healthy and happy otherwise. Petra and Felix

Hi, "Tetanus is very rare in Australia. Dogs and cats tend to have a natural resistance whereas horses and humans are the most susceptible to the illness. Tetanus is caused by an anaerobic (living in environments free of oxygen) bacteria, Clostridium tetani, that is spread by a penetrating wound or by contamination of an already existing wound or contracted by a dog that is teething finding an old bone in the yard and the germ entering via the open gums. It is killed by digestive enzymes, and therefore does not cause illness when ingested. Clostridium tetani produces two toxins, one of which, tetanospasmin, causes a blockage of neuromuscular transmission--that is, paralysis. The blockage is irreversible and recovery relies on the creation of new nerve cells." Don't want to be an alarmist bt it could be possible. Petra and Felix

Hi, Retained Testicles: Overview and Treatment Overview The testes are the male reproductive glands that normally start off positioned in the abdomen as embryo (fetal) development progresses during pregnancy (gestation). They normally travel down through the abdomen from their initial location near the kidney, out through the inguinal ring in the groin, into the scrotum soon after birth. Retained (cryptorchid) testicles are those that do not complete this journey by 24 weeks of age. Sometimes they have migrated out of the abdomen and are sitting in the tissues just in front of the scrotum around the ring that provides the point of exit from the abdomen. Testes that are retained inside the abdomen are subject to high core body temperature and do not produce sperm. As a result they usually atrophy or waste away. Retained Testes and Sertoli Cell Tumors Retained testes are more likely to develop sertoli cell tumors. Dogs with retained testes has 13 times the risk of this tumor compared with a dog that has normally descended testes in the scrotum. When this tumor is present, the one testicle out in the scrotum will often become larger than normal, and signs related to an increase in female hormones estrogen and progesterone will occur. If left untreated, the high estrogen state associated with sertoli cell tumors will lead to problems with blood cell production. Sertoli cell tumors also spread around the body (metastasize) in about one of every ten dogs with this cancer. Treatment If a dog still has a testicle that is not in the scrotum by sexual maturity (7-9 months of age), castration should be performed to remove both the retained and descended testes. The surgery requires an incision either in the skin of the groin area, or an incision into the abdomen so that the retained one or two testicles can be surgically removed. The scrotal testis of the unilateral cryptorchid is also removed through a separate incision just in front of the scrotum. Once the testes are removed, testicle tumor risk is gone. http://www.bakalo.com/cryptorchidism.htm Hope this helps Petra and Felix
