What Trick Are You Teaching Your Dog
sheena replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Enabler :p Yes, that's how I taught Em a kick back stand. She offers behaviours so fast that I can't keep up  so tickling her into a stand was just so much easier. BTW, sheena, I too love using the clicker....I use a verbal marker when training a lot of things but the dogs' eyes light up when they see the clicker come out. I always train my dogs without a collar/lead so the toughest thing about juggling the clicker/treats is not spilling my wine  I don't have a lead to worry about either.....Hmmmmmmmm....must try it with the wine  -

If anybody is interested, Clean Run have Collapsible Target Sticks on free shipping for just $8.95 US Corvus...I have never tried it, but what if you were to touch his back foot & click & treat as soon as he lifts it. Then progress to keeping your hand there, threatening to touch it, & click to get duration. I know my girl has ticklish feet, so it might work. :) -
I just break them up & put them inside some yummy food...no problem, especially seeing they should be given with food anyway :)

I gave it a go, today, but my girl sort of freaked out a bit  Will try again though. -
The problem my dog has with kibble is that she takes sooooooo long to eat one piece that by the time she's finished she has no idea why it was given in the first place. The fact that she's not food-driven ensures she will never have too much of any treat, BUT when she does receive a treat it has to be soft (easy/quick to eat) and stong tasting. I suppose that's the disadvantage of having a dog that's not food driven. She's a relatively lean dog so it's not that she eats so much at mealtime that she has no interest in treats The Black Hawk kibble is very tiny, just the right size for treats, & the dogs love it. If you email to BH they will send you a sample that you can use.

The full list is In this Link, but last time I made a batch, cut them up, mixed them together & put them in the freezer...I made...VIP Lamb chunkers fried in garlic & oil, beef liver sliced about 1cm thick & roasted slowly in the oven till nice & leathery, some old thin sausages fried up (can be cooked in with the others), When cool mix them all together including a couple of cups of their favourite kibble. I try to cut them up as small as possible but that's not necessary as they are easy enough to break apart when using them. Also sometimes I will boil up some hearts or bake an extra piece of meat when preparing our baked dinner. The Lamb Chunkers once fried up are very easy to handle & not at all greasy, so they are always part of the mix.

As long as you weren't giving too much, I don't see why not. I would't buy them myself, as I make up a batch of about 2 - 3 kilos of a time of different sorts & freeze them. With two dogs they only last a couple of weeks as we mainly train with food. I also use their Black Hawk kibble as treats, they like that just as much. :) But I like to give them variety.

Treats as in training treats or just one or two a day for being good, type treats If being used for training treats, I would say, too much salt & too expensive compared to just getting some chicken & cutting it up. Bar-b-q chooks make up heaps of treats & would be a lot cheaper, if you want to use chook, but also contains a fair bit of salt, I imagine.

Yes definitely a nose target as well, or with my girl it is now a sort of head bob thing. As SPD says, you may lose the head bod in the ring, but will get the 2o2o. With the walking back to between my legs, I started by clicking her when she stuck her head between my legs from behind. I didn't use food to lure her, but would have used some sort of hand motion to get her into position to start. this is the youtube I watched to get the idea. :) -

What I have been working on this week in very small sessions using a clicker, small bits of kibble & back chaining, is getting her to spin & walk backwards from the other side of the room to between my legs. She can now do it from about 4 feet away, but just has to get her accuracy right. I had a big break though last night when she offered me the behaviour time & time again just because I was holding her favourite toy I mix it up a bit with doing old tricks & heeling etc, but my sessions are short. -
I know there is a pinned topic above for all things trick, but it hasn't been looked at since February. So this is a thread for teaching tricks. You might like to talk about what trick you are working on at the moment, any problems you may be having, what's your method.ie. clicker or luring. Videos are always welcome And thanks for that Facebook link PAX...I have joined but not everyone is on Facebook, hence the reason for this thread.

Two things I have been working on this week...(using the clicker) walking backwards from the other side of the room to between my legs & standing for longer on back legs. She can now reverse pretty much in a straight line from about 4 feet away & stand on her back legs for about two seconds. I only train for a couple of minutes using a clicker & a small handful of kibble. Just about everything I have taught my girl for dancing, tricks & agility, I have shaped her with a clicker. Playing LAT with her was the most awesome. Maybe we should start a new thread for this, so as not to hijack the original :) -

I have never heard of chickweed being used for treatment of cancers....I use chickweed as a soothing eye wash. I have heard of Radium weed, Euphorbia peplus, being used to treat skin cancers....are you sure you have the right weed :) It ha been a remedy ever since I can remember Sheena, my Grandmother used it (she also fed her pet budgie with it ) and the Aussie old-timers/farmers used to use it on skin cancers Here are a couple of links (the first one has nothing to do with my Grandmother) http://grannyearth.c...tellaria-media/ http://www.holistic-.../_Herbs/h45.htm Yes..I agree it is used as a soothing agent...I use it myself, as I said. But I think when they are talking about this other stuff, I think they are referring to something that burns skin cancers off. Chickweed will not do that but radium weed which looks very similar will. :) That is the stuff I have in the garden Sheena...I thought it was chickweed ,(silly me) I just Googled it an there is a good photo here (on scumtree) http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/joyner/miscellaneous-goods/milkweed-radium-weed-euphorbia-peplus-plants-milk-weed/315674511 It has a white sap when you break it. Totally different name...the Radium weed is Euphorba peplus, no wonder it's sappy, it being a Euphorbia, some of them can really irritate the skin. Grandma must have fed the budgie chickweed though as it didn't turn up its toes and die  Yeah...there is a HUGE difference in the two. They look a bit similar, but it wouldn't be nice to get them mixed up  -

Loved that Corvus And so please that there is somebody else around other than me, that uses the clicker  It is such a useful tool, why don't more people try it. My dog will start offering behaviours as soon as she knows I have the clicker...she just loves it so much, that training becomes real fun for her. -

If he is a smart learner & he understands the value of the clicker, then you would be amazed at just how much smarter he can get & how quickly he can learn using a clicker to shape. :) You don't introduce the cue word until you have the behaviour & he understands it 100%...then introduce your cue word. -

Yes...start with something bigger & heavier so it wont move so easily & then scale it down. Are you using a clicker to shape the behaviour ???? -
The dog that can't eat bones...have you tried him on a turkey neck ???
