I have never used a blind cross (intentionally) in Agility but I notice that more & more handlers are using this handling manouver to change handler sides. I am thinking of giving it a go with my slower dog mainly, as obviously you have to be in front of your dog to perform it. The advantage that I see is that it may get more speed into the dog, as front crosses tend to slow the dog down & often she is not going fast enough for me to perform a back cross. The disadvantages that I can think of are that I have to take my eye off the dog (which I often do anyway ) & that she may then think it's OK to cross behind me to take an off course. What are other DOL's thoughts on using the Blind Cross ???

If he's overweight then no "lite" kibble will get the weight off him if she feeds him too much of it. Obviously, the problem is the quantity she is feeding him V lack of exercise. Whatever is in the kibble maybe contributing to his itchiness...so the two are probably related, unless he has fleas or it is a contact allergy from something around the house or garden.

Just beautiful...the look on that old lady's face tells it all :)

White Dog Needing Sunscreen
sheena replied to aussiecattledog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The one I use sometimes if my dogs are out in the sun at trials, is Virbac. I bought mine online but you might be able to get it at a horse supplier. It is very thick & would be hard to lick off. -
Great...thanks Snook...I don't think my Mum would approve, but then it's not about her & she will just have to get over it, if she wants me to go with her to visit Dad's grave. I just don't want to appear disrespectful, but having a dog there in a car, distressed & barking her head off is far worse IMO.
-
Interesting that other people have taken their dogs into cemeteries. I will do that next time with her on a lead & if anybody says anything to me, I'll leave. But surely you would be allowed to take a beloved pet in to visit their deceased owner if that was the case.

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell..I don't think an airtight metal box would stop them. That's the first I have heard that the bodies are sealed in an airtight metal box...I'm pretty sure Dad isn't.

Yes... it was sad & I wonder if she knew that it was "Pop" who was buried there as she was my constant companion on my visits during his last year, not that he was any great dog lover & I can't even recall him even patting her, but she knew how much I loved him & was upset when he died.
-
I took my Mum & my usually very well behaved & quite girl to the cemetery to pay our respects to my Dad who died just twelve months ago. I parked under a tree no more than 10 meters from Dad's grave & rolled down all the windows. I have never seen her so upset before & she wouldn't stop barking at us till we got back in the car. It wasn't because she was left in the car, as when I visit Mum, we go to lots of places & Bindi gets left in the car under a tree while we do our "thing". It must have been because she could sense all the death around her. ..that's the only thing I can think of. Unfortunately, I will have to take her with me every time I visit Dad's grave as I have no where to leave her, but next time I will put her on a lead & take her to the grave with me. I can't recall seeing any signs saying "no dogs".

We need some newbies in the class...just waiting to get enough numbers to start a new beginners class :)

Sheena, there must be quite a few people who are unaware of this particular scam and others that are similar. If it was so widely known then these people wouldnt bother, because it takes quite a bit of time for them to set it all up. As I have said previously there still must be a reasonable catch quota for them otherwise they would look for other fishing grounds. Fishermen dont go to areas where there are no fish when they set their nets, just as these people wouldnt bother with this if they didnt get results. I have to say that I was surprised that my friend didnt know about this scam, but then when I thought about it, I realised that there must be quite a few like her, because the scammers keep on calling people. I have made sure that all the old people I know personally are aware including my old mum & yes, I am surprised that they are still doing it, as it is as old as the hills...we used to get about 3 calls a week & when I am visiting my old mum, I answer the phone there & there they are...still at it
-
Myself & most other people I know have been getting this phone call for years, so I am surprised that this lady was not aware of it I usually have a lot of fun acting the complete dumb ass, if I have the time, but I have finally stopped them by getting rid of my phone :)

My desexed girl will do this sometimes, but only outdoors thank goodness  She always marks where she has eaten her turkey neck & if given the opportunity will mark his as well...but most times I feed them separate.

Wow....I wonder if it is the Northern Lights...thanks for sharing :)

Mine don't really get proper baths. The young guy has only had one bath in 2 & 1/2 years. They both swim in the pool every day & if Bindi happens to have rolled in something (Cricket doesn't do that), then I will hose her down first, put her in the pool, then soap her up & back in she goes to wash it off. I have a little part of the veranda sectioned off & she goes into that till she is dry, then she is allowed in the house. Cricket just rolls around in the garden, but his fur is such that by the afternoon he is squeaky clean again. :)

Oh dear. Apparently their toy and mini varieties have very "pacific" uses. Something to do with the ocean maybe? But not very "comon"

Can you come back in here & let us know how it is going :) I've never tried the disc because the instructions say not to use any other chemicals & I'm not prepared to put my kids in danger by going 100% disc so if you are going 100% disc it would be great to know how successful you find it.

Thinking about it. I have it on good authority that there are NO fire ants at the grounds & they are going to post it on the website to dispel all rumours.

Thanks Pie, I am trying to work out whether to just take my girl or take the young bloke as well. June is a long way off from February when the entries are due (earlybird), so I guess if my dog was to get a title between now & then, that I would just advise them & change it before the final closing date.
-
Thanks Pie, so for a Masters 500 dog I will only be going in 2 events on the first day ADM & JDM ?? & on the second day, it has three lots of ADO's & 3 x JDO's. So would you normally enter all those or just ones in certain rings. All the rest are clear to me except for the last day....entries for the last day would depend on the results of the previous days as they are all finals ?? I wonder if it's true about the fire ants on the ground.

This is the schedule for the ANKC Nationals being held in June. Can someone have a look at it & tell me am I right that the first day is just for team events

I totally agree with you. This dog should have been euthanised at birth. Times 3 or 4. That poor pup is going to go through hell as he gets older with all that weight bearing without back legs Just another example of the sadistic human race making a show case out of something that is deformed If he was born in the wild he wouldn't have survived...that's just nature.

What Trick Are You Teaching Your Dog
sheena replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Circle around you backwards & cross arms (paws) :) Sounds like he is a smart little guy. Zeus is way too smart for his own good and he definitely tries my patience sometimes  I've been meaning to come back and ask how to go about starting training Zeus to circle around me backwards -- it doesn't sound easy! Get yourself into a confined space like the end of the hallway or even smaller to get a tight turn. Start with him in heel position & lure him backwards, clicking & treating for any movement in that direction. If the space is limiting it will make him go backwards & around your legs. When he knows what he is doing put a cue on it...I use "Scoot". I can only get Bindi to do a 180 backward turn around me, but I turn in the opposite direction & repeat the command & only click treat when she has completed the full 360 now. Only problem with Bindi is that if I try to do a simple heel backwards, she "scoots" or goes between my legs....so formal obedience is out for us  -

Yah... I havn't done any "bow" training with Bindi for a few nights & when I got the clicker out tonight & asked for a bow, she went straight into it. I didn't even have to get down on the floor with her, I just bent over & pointed to the floor. Party....party
