At What Age Do We Stop Getting New Dogs?
sheena replied to Aleksandra 157's topic in General Dog Discussion
At 63, I am now planning for my next BC pup when I am about 67. It will most likely be my last agility dog, but certainly not my last BC. But when I get into my late 70's, if I am still active & healthy, then I may make future plans, but will probably settle for more sedate dog activities :) -
They have some great stuff & a lot of it is seafood based...so a bit different to the normal "beef liver" :D

Best Border Collie Breeders In Qld And Nsw?
sheena replied to Paws22's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not quite sure if I agree with this. There are some lovely chocolate & white & other colours around that are registered BC's. If you are talking Mains registered, then the OP has about as much chance as a snowball in hell, of being able to buy a Mains Registered BC. Almost all or them are sold on Limited Register & that certainly doesn't mean that the dog is inferior, or is not healthy or doesn't have a lovely temperament. It just simply means the dog can't be shown or bred from, which is fine by most people. :) As the OP is not after a performance dog and show bred litters have been suggested, the chance of getting a chocolate from show lines is almost zero as hardly any of the show lines have the choc gene. At least 90% of show dogs are black and white. There are some chocs in the performance dogs and they are a dime a dozen from those who breed for nothing but colour, so lots of chocs around but very few from good breeders. In the show lines black is most common, followed by red, then blue. Only about 3 or 4 show breeders in the entire country have choc dogs in their lines at all and only have choc puppies by chance as none breed just to get the colour. I agree that most of the show dogs are B & W. That's a lot to do with the fact that judges are bias towards them. Go overseas & I am sure it would be a bit different. BUT what you said was that most of the ANKC registered dogs are B & W, which could lead the OP into thinking that to get a healthy registered BC she will have to go B & W. I really don't understand why all this bias against coloured dogs. In the circle that I mix in (agility) if you look at the line up of BC's, the coloured ones outnumber the B & W by far. I have two beautiful coloured BC's & they have never had a day sick in their lives. Of all the BC's on DOL, I seem to notice that the ones who come up with the most health problems seem to be B & W. It's strange that in other breeds like the labrador, there is no bias against blacks & browns. There are some lovely choclate BC's coming in from overseas now. :) -

100kg dog!!!! Is there such thing?! I hope it's a typo LOL Are the dried mussels any different nutritionally to fresh ones? I've given my girl dried ones before and she liked them. I don't think I've seen fresh ones anywhere... are they also called green lipped mussels at the fishmongers or are they just regular mussels? I know nothing about seafood... I think she means 100kg OF dog, in other words 1 a day is plenty for the average dog (I think that was her point). Instead of saying 1/4 per dog. I think that the green lipped mussel is only grown in the waters around New Zealand & is different to the ones we get out of our waters. They bring them over from NZ & process them at LPT's in Queensland & the way they dry them is supposed to retain all their goodness.
-
I am thinking of having a munch on them myself. The lady from LPT's has told me that they are a very large mussels so one mussel daily is sufficient for one 100kg dog. She recommends one a day for two weeks then drop it back to 3 or 4 times a week. At that rate the bag is going to last me forever. I know of someone who does eat LPT's mussels & swears by them for her osteoarthritis :)

At What Age Do We Stop Getting New Dogs?
sheena replied to Aleksandra 157's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a very healthy active 64 year old friend who was knocked back by a rescue because they felt she was too old to be getting a pup So she went & bought one off Gumtree....no questions asked !! -
I love mussels & often buy a jar of marinated ones for myself, though I suspect the processing of the marinade/cooking would destroy most of their benefits. I do believe that these ones from LPT's which are A grade are safe for humans to eat.
-
I'm getting them quite a bit cheaper than the ones from Sunday Pets (I think). They are coming down from Loyalty Pet Treats who had a stall at the Agility Nationals. They are $77 per kilo, which is a very large bag. The ones I saw on the Sunday Pets were 50g bags for about $10.
-
I am getting some dried whole (without the shell) green lipped New Zealand mussels. Probably just to feed as a special treat, but has anybody else ever fed whole mussels before. Any idea on how many could be too many I know they are good stuff, but don't want to over do it...they are already getting whole dried pilchards every second day.
-
I couldn't vote as I HAVE fed them in the past but I don't come under the category of DO YOU FEED. I had no problem with them, but I feed turkey necks, which I think are fairly balanced.

I have this posted in the puppy section, so hope Troy doesn't mind me putting it here as well, as maybe some rescue owners don't normally look in the Puppy Forum. Quote from Kelly for all those with rescue dogs :) " Our next Puppy Training Course starts next week and we are reaching out to people who have rescue puppies or older rescue dogs that could use some training or help. We know that people sometimes don't get ongoing support when they adopt a dog. We are offering anyone with a rescue puppy or dog the opportunity to do our next course for free. For more information about the course check out Pet Lovers Puppy Club If you are interested, or know someone with a rescue pup/ dog who may benefit please email [email protected] and we will tell you how to register."

The tapeworm that can be found in raw offal that has not been passed as safe for human consumption is the Hydatid tapeworm which is not the variety of tapeworm we're discussing here. Some research perhaps and all will be revealed. I don't think I suggested dogs ingesting fleas is the only way they would catch tapeworm but I do think it's the most likely way. I did in fact say that the dogs could be getting tapeworm from eating possum poop but that was probably in another of my replies in this convoluted thread with all the confusing quotes and double posts. I agree with your suggestion that Charjas should treat all members of the household with an all wormer from the chemist. It's the Hydatit tapeworm I was thinking of. Do we know what type of tapeworm the OP is talking about ? I was of the opinion that ordinary wormers (monthly ones) do not treat Hydatit Tapeworm & that is why we worm every three months with a wormer that does Hydatit. My dogs live on a farm surrounded by bush, so they get to eat every kind of poo... possum, chook, cow, calf, kangaroo (yum), fox...you name it. I only treat with a wormer every 3 months, on the first day of each season & heartworm monthly. -
That looks really neat KHM Did you use an expensive one ? I was thinking more along the lines of cheap stuff from Bunnings, but if it gives off dangerous chemicals, then I might opt for the stuff you put down in caravan annexes & maybe a bit of outdoor carpet at one end....the type you use for boats etc.

Paws22...Border Collies are wonderful dogs & personally, I wouldn't have anything else...but I am a bit bias  They are great companions, have terrific personalities & they give me a reason to get out & be active. If you would like to see what we do with our two borders, here is a link to my website, which I set up just for fun initially, as I am not a breeder, but it now has pages which (I would hope) are full of good information Link to my border collie web page :) -
Both Sick Again Tearing My Hair Out.
sheena replied to Charjas's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
That ^ bolded part is not correct. Interceptor does prevent tapeworm. Of course if Charjas forgets to give Interceptor regularly there is no protection against any worms, including heartworm. Charjas, in order for your dog to have tapeworm it must have fleas. Tapeworm comes from the dog ingesting fleas when they bite at the itch. It would be best if you use Sentinel instead of Interceptor to prevent a flea infestation. Again, if you forget to give the dogs the medication they have no protection against anything. I don't know your history either but I wanted to assure Charjas that Interceptor does prevent tapeworm. Can you please clear me up on this, CavNrott. I always thought a dog could get tapeworm from eating infected offal, or wildlife especially those little penny lizards. I knew they got it from ingesting fleas, but surely that is not the only way. Also Charjas, if your dogs have tapeworm, then I would be going to the chemist & telling them & getting a wormer to treat yourself plus anybody else who has contact with your dogs. As you can pick up tapeworm eggs from your dog & ingest them. Please correct me if I am wrong.....DOL's -

Cat food is much higher in protein & fat than dog food & can cause vomiting & diarrhea if fed in quantities. If I were you I would be changing my vet. -

Are you saying that you are feeding your dogs Science diets FOR CATS I didn't think you could feed cat food to dogs. & Yes, you need to give a wormer that treats tapeworm. Usually you do this every three months. -

Have you owned a border collie before ?? Are you prepared to put in all the work required to keep it from getting bored ?? You say you are not wanting to do dog sports, agility etc & just want a pet. What sort of things are you going to do with it :)
