Yes...it is one of the disadvantages of being an instructor...your own dog misses out on so much. I would just LOVE to be there on the sideline, just watching, listening to instruction & using the opportunity to work on my own dog I certainly take the opportunity to work with her when I go to trials. Crating is not an option as she would still carry on if another dog was exciting enough & it's way too hot to cover her. I don't always run her in a harness, but I can't see how it is more dangerous than a collar.

South Australia Legislation Change Re Electronic Collars
sheena replied to Kajirin's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wonder if the training would be effective enough to last the dog for life, or would it have to be repeated, probably annually...just to remind the dog. Just thinking, if the dog receives the training & then comes into close proximity to a few snakes along the way & finds, surprise, surprise....I didn't get zapped...if the training would wear off & the dogs natural curiosity & prey drive would start to creep back in. -
YIKES talk about "poor man pays twice" On the subject of dogs doing some agility training in a well fitting harness...& I am not talking about competition....I feel there is no more risk of a dog getting caught up on equipment if it is wearing a well fitted harness, as if it were wearing a collar. Getting caught up on a collar could result in a broken neck or hanging..whereas a harness would result in a bad fright. I have seen dogs getting "hung" when wearing collars...I am yet to see one hung from wearing a well fitted harness. She wears a harness at training because she carries on like a pork chop if the other dogs are running & barking & as I am the one instructing, I don't have the priviledge of being there on the side with her & working on her training etc....someone else is holding her....one of the great disadvantages of being a trainer. When this is happening, I would rather her be pulling & dancing on the end of a harness, then on a collar, & risking neck injury.

South Australia Legislation Change Re Electronic Collars

...if you are good in throwing and aiming these gadgets work pretty well, you just have to hit the snake...but then you could just use a stone  ...I did some reading about this and other 'snake repellents'....I couldn't find any hint that such repellents work (except mechanical barriers). I guess there is also a big risk to do damage to the dogs hearing or at least it could cause stress if the dog is exposed to it all the time? No...I am not talking about ultrasonic snake repellers. I have a hand held ultrasonic thing, which I have used in desperation & as a last resort to train my dogs out of very bad behaviours. I havn't used it for years except for ridding the bats out of my fruit trees or rats out of my walls. It would work as in ...the dog goes near the snake/smell/movement etc just the same as they are training it in the video with the shock collar...but instead of the dog getting a shock, it would get a burst of harmless ultrasonic sound. The ultrasonic that the snake repellers deliver is not on the dogs wavelength & therefor they (the dogs) are uneffected by it. The snake repellers work more on a "vibration" through the ground. -

It probably wouldn't be as effective, but I wonder if they have investigated the use of ultrasonic for training snake avoidance. A couple of years ago, I engaged my "inventor/genius" sister to develop a set up for using ultrasonic. She got all excited about it to start with, then went right off track as to what I wanted If there were somewhere close to me that trained this...I would certainly be taking my dogs along. -
I would imagine that if it were restricting her movement, then she would be dropping bars etc
-
I've got these ones too....fully adjustable & doesn't restrict movement :) She wears it during agility training & also as a car harness Sheena, what size did you pick? ...small (S)? Small for her...she is a medium size BC @ about 17/18 kilos, & I got a medium for my bigger boy. I found the sizes quite generous...normally she would be a medium.

I would be trying the Look At That Game...see this link Link to my webpage where I explain all about it & how to teach it. Basically it is a counter-conditioning game.....have a read :)

Jahzzy have them cheaper than that. I also bought one from ADAA about 6 years ago & it has laid around in the paddock all that time & is still good.
-
Don't buy those cheap yellow ones...they are horrible. If you want a decent tunnel then look up Jahzzy Agility. You only get what you pay for, when it comes to tunnels.

Unless...of course, like me, you either feed home made treats or the 100% all natural, no added salt ones, like Loyalty Pet Treats make :)

Lovely....how did you cut out the background ??

Yes, I have tried that! I do like it, and so does she, but am yet to see it work in high stressed situations! She gets too focused on the other thing, and tunes me out - and the clicker. I totally think it would work to gradually work up to more stimulants, but how would you do that? Every day is different, as different people walk around at different times, and its never the same. You know? And for mental stimulation - walking on a leash is actually a lot of mental stimulation. Play-wise and outside walking, i've taught her to 'catch' from far away, we play 'hide and seek' in my house - my fav :) And usually my brother might play with her and gets her to sit, lie down and roll over. I also do a calming game, where I teach her to focus on only me (and treats) and looking into my eyes - and as she begins to calm more (ears relaxed, leg relaxed or even lying down), i reward her. Its great for when she gets too excited about something, as i just need to look at her and get her to sit, and she calms down. If this is the case, then you are either too late with your click or you are too close to the stimuli...or both. No matter what type of training you do to fix this, you are going to have to build up the stimuli & that could mean taking her for walks where there is less dogs. I did it with my girl in the environment of agility trials, & I always practice it when I am on walks with her where she might bump into a little white fluffy. Did you have a read of the notes I pointed you to ???
-
Have you tried the Look At That Game (LAT)...Have a look hereSure it needs a controlled environment & you gradually work up to more & more stimulants, but a lot of people, myself included, have found it a wonderful tool. Do you teach her tricks using a clicker & treats...what sort of mental stimulation/training do you give her ??

Sadly, Helen King passed away on the 9th September. She will certainly be missed by the agility world, especially those of us who she was a role model for. She showed us all that age & speed of the handler didn't matter...we could all do it . She would have had a few dogs waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP Helen King

Just pushed his "Like" button so I can follow it. My OH is a returned soldier from Vietnam & suffers from PTSD as do all of his friends who served over there with him in combat. Interestingly, my OH says that walking the Kokoda Track last year, was far more beneficial to treating his PTSD than all the pills the docs have given him over the years.
