Dry Shampoos , Potato Flour & Wonder Wash
sheena replied to sheena's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do you just lather it in then mop it up with a towel & the dirt comes out with it ??? Why do these BC's always think they look better with green greasy necks -
How effective are dry shampoos for cleaning the odd bit of muck off a dog. I also recall something about using potato flour to do the same thing, but where do you buy it & how do you use it???? My girl came inside for bed last night & horrors of horrors, she had been rolling in green kangaroo poo. So I had to soap her neck up & wash it off before her going to bed. Would either of the above mentioned products be good for removing this sort of muck when a shampoo is out of the question. Or any other ideas....thanks.

Wasn't there a thread a while ago, similiar to this, where the person had purchased a Blue Staffy & had this same problem. Not sure how that one ended up

Thanks Rumour :) you may be right. If that's the case then WOM is a very good friend of mine
-
That must be why the list of stockists has grown so greatly in the last few months, then. May I ask who "WOM" is??? please excuse my ignorance :) Some people are more attracted to "negatives" & tend to gloss over the positives. Good news does not sell newspapers.

I just put this on another post....so no...you are not seeing double (or is that yes, you are), but I thought I would post it here also as I feel it is important. Just a word of caution for those using fish meal based dog food from the United States. Check out the level of ethoxyquin it contains. Fish meal is preserved with ethoxyquin on the ships prior to entering port. Ethoxyquin is most effective at preventing rancidity in the highly volatile fish meal. It is also a pesticide & herbicide. There is only a very small supply of "E" free fish meal available in the United States. TOTW say they don't add it, but it's there to start with...the cooking process does destroy some E but then they have to add other preservatives. For more information on ethoxyquin ...just do some Googling. Until today I had never heard of it, but someone sent me a copy of an email sent to them from TOTW.

English Ivy...I hope you don't think my comments if I made any were picking on you. I get ribbed all the time by a few DOL's, but I don't let it get to me. There are lots of nice ones on here too that are offering advice in the best interest of you & your dog. I just learn to know who the "pickers" are...& don't even bother to read their posts. I am so glad Badger has a new coat & kennel, maybe try spraying something on it so he doesn't chew this one up, the kennel as well, if he's anything like my young guy, anything that looks new or different is there to be chewed. I don't think it would matter what you feed your dog, when it comes to winter most dogs in cold climates are going to need a bit more...just like us. Try him on some porridge made with real traditional rolled oats.

MTS...I thought you were feeding your dogs RAW. According to you, your dogs used to do well on BH...here is the quote Posted 14 June 2011 - 10:43 PM Hi my dogs get emu oil each day as it is in there food. Black hawk holistic has emu oil in it. I have noticed my dogs coats have gotten softer, there coats are shiny, Buddy the old male golden has arthritis in his lower spine and the food is helping in reducing the pain,I have also noticed that Buddy wants to play more then he did before. Shelley has stopped scratching around her neck as much. I have also notice that Buddy hasn't got another ear infection yet either. (end of quote) You have changed your dogs food around so much in the last few months, that you wouldn't have any idea what is making them itch or scratch or put on weight, or lose weight, or fart or stink or vomit or whatever. Any one who has read MTS previous posts will know what I mean. Poor Shelly, she is outside in the cold, with a lovely fluffy coat, a veranda & a wood fire to lay in front of, does no exercise...yeah...for sure she should be losing weight...get real!!

Good luck with your puppy...hope you get it sorted soon, but I just had to add.....how gorgeous are your dogs :) Just make sure he's not getting anything like liver treats, cause they can go through them like a ton of salts.

now I'm nervous for you! My eating could be a problem, when I'm nervous the thought of food makes me want to After reading the thread re feeding before trial I think it makes a lot of sense and I will make sure Indi gets a light breakfast. Good luck with your Rally-O & CCD trial - we'll both have to come back here after we've trialled and compare notes re coping with nerves  I find it hard to eat when I am nervous, but I do try to eat a little breakfast then take along lots of little nibble thingos & a can of organic coconut water from the health food shop, not the kind you get from the supermarket. The Rescue Remedy Pascals are worth a try :) Good luck & yes, we will have to compare notes...but personally, I am looking upon it as some sort of training day & if we does well, then that will be a bonus...it is after all, just a game to be played with your best mate. :)

Double Post...sorry...stupid internet

some dry food makers do advise that adding other foods to their product can cause an imbalance. Can't name them off the top of my head but I have seen that advice previously. It is usually about 85% - ie if you add more than 15% other stuff to dry food, then it is unbalanced. Each manufacturer has a different level but I think 85% is about average. I would have thought it was more to do with adding trace elements like calcium & magnesium as supplements rather then actual food. Complete and Balanced means, it is complete and balance to feed on its own to supply the required nutrition to maintain a dogs life, the only ways these formulas can be thrown out of balance is by adding large amounts of products such as calcium, magnesiums etc, There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding meat or fish or vegies etc

My guys get fed twice a day with treats throughout the day. I wouldn't like to only have one big meal a day, so I don't expect my dogs to either. So much easier on their digestive system to be have the meal divided & fed twice a day. IMO
-
If he's doing OK on the chicken & rice, then reintroduce the BH far more slowly...it may be a bit too rich for him, but strange how he has been OK for 3 weeks on it. Just wondering what do you give him for treats as dried liver treats will give lots of pups the runs & I mean really runny I agree with the comment on getting hold of chicken poo (or bird poo).

So true ........... I find being videoed makes me very nervous. It's crazy because it's me that wants the video but as soon as the camera starts so do the nerves. I have gone to a couple of trials (with Indi) and watched the CCD ring and yes I did feel better as there were plenty of others who were making mistakes (I won't be the only one ). And yes Pax I intend to make the right decisions for Indi and if that means pulling her out I will :) Lol I have friends that are already insisting I try some rescue remedy, although I didn't know you could get them in pascals - I'll have to look into that. A nice wine has also been suggested  For about the first 18 months of me doing agility trials, I used to get so nervous that I would get the runs Now I just look upon it as "just another run with my dog"...my whole outlook changed when my OH reminded me one day that I was not playing for sheep stations. In a couple of weeks I have my first ever Rally-O & CCD trial. I am a bit nervous about that, because I am not really too sure what I am meant to do  as I am completely self-taught. Just make sure you have breakfast before the trial & have plenty of small snacks during the morning & fluids. Important also, that your dog gets a small breakfast at least two hours before the trial. I give my BC girl about 100g of mince, pinch of bicarb & mixed with some warm water & feed about two hours before the agility trial. Since doing this, the improvement in her performance & concentration levels is remarkable.

Rescue remedy pascals might help...available from health food stores. :)

Strange that my two BC's do so well on it. The girl is 19 kilos & the young boy is 23 kilos & VERY active. They get a cup full each a day plus 100g of meat or tinned fish & in the mornings they get 1/2 a turkey neck & if anything, I have to keep a watch that they don't put weight on. I am very happy the way my two are going on BH....here is a picture of my girl with her stash from last weekends agility trial :) & their poos are a real delight to pick up & only twice a day & hardly any smell why do you think it's strange? Not all dogs do well on the same food. You're not even feeding straight BH but a mixture of raw and dry. Unless you are only feeding straight BH I don't think anyone can claim that it is BH doing the good or bad things people are saying. Thats very true hence why I feed only one type of Dry food & no extras... Only way to know whats happening... I would also hope that the dry food I feed is balanced... & by adding extras now potentially unbalances the diet. But I prepared to make the 2mths then make a decision. Otherwise I'll be looking for another brand. OK...so you think that by adding 100g meat or fish & half a turkey neck to my dogs 1 cup of kibble is unbalancing their diet. So you are saying that your dogs do not ever get a raw meaty bone or anything else except kibble in case it "unbalances" their diet. Please tell me what is "unbalanced" by what I give my dogs. If my dogs diet is so "unbalanced" as you say, then please explain why they are so lovely & healthy & active, maintain good weight & have such perfect poos. I am not claiming that it is the BH alone that my dogs are doing well on...I am claiming it is the diet they are on which includes BH. I can't believe there are people out there that do not ever give their dogs a RMB or any extras.....how boring for the dogs. So please explain to me, what I am doing that is unbalancing my dogs" diet & if so....why are they so healthy I have the same type of dogs as DannyBC. Maybe you should try "unbalancing" their diet in the same manner I do, & you might have the same success. and who exactly are you replying too cause I never said anything about your diet being unbalanced. I am replying to DannyBC, who apart from never giving their dogs RMB's don't give their dogs training treats either as they are worried they will unbalance their dogs diet.

How To Help Dogs Gain Weight.
sheena replied to boxmeupboxer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
What do you feed her now??? Desexing might help...you wouldn't want an entire girl any way, as you wouldn't be breeding or showing with her obviously -
Personally, I wouldn't be changing his food. I would be locking him in a nice warm crate at night which is covered on at least 3 sides with nice warm blankets etc. Shame about the coat, cause that would be really good as long as you were consistant with putting it on. On top of locking him in a nice warm & snug crate, I would continue to give him the BH...maybe increase it by 50 - 100% & give him some regular bones like lamb flanks. Nice warm rolled oats (porridge) are a good way of maintaining weight...you know...traditional rolled oats, not the instant ones. :)

I am not sure what the point is either in this post , but I wish there were more rangers around doing their job & fining these irresponsible owners for letting their dogs roam the street & spoil it all for others that wish to walk their dogs in safety & without stress.
