I guess the question I need to ask is....do you think she knows what stay means? I think she used to, but something has happened to lessen her understanding. Maybe I should do some individual exercises to strengthen that? Last night we trained with a group. She did the sit stay no problems. In the down stay, she stood up when I got about 10m away. I released then reset her and she was ok for the full 5 minutes. I could tell she was nervous for the first 30 seconds or so - sniffed the ground a bit and was looking around. After that she settled and even put her head down. We then did a few more quick stays just with a trusted and steady dog, with no problems. I tried short distance as well as long distance but I can't quite work out what her threshold is. My guess is that she is nervous about staying when with other dogs...she probably feels vulnerable...but you've probably already thought of that. I teach my stays, using their food. I am currently training my girl for her first ever CCD & have been working on this. If I put her in a sit, I don't add "stay" as "sit" should mean, "sit there until you are released", then put the food down away from her & time her with a stop watch. If she drops I just say woops, & go back & gently pull her on the collar to reposition her....I never release her when she breaks as this could be seen as a reward for breaking her sit. I watch her very carefully, for signs of impatience & try & release her before she decides to break...if you know what I mean. She is very good & we are up to 1 minute sits where she will move nothing but her head I also practice it at agility training with all the distractions around her, but I don't ask for a whole minute, cause I don't believe in setting her up to fail. However....I fear it is going to be a different story in the competition with other dogs sitting near her.

Having a dog sleep with a muzzle on There are some horse products that you can apparently use for dogs, I'm thinking of getting them for my Pointer. The name escapes me but head to your local Horseland/Nag Mart and ask them. I guess some horses chew rugs too? Why not????? they are light wire and hundreds of dogs wear them to stop them destroying things. Some of my dogs had to wear them 24/7 to stop them chewing in the dog trailer. :) Are the soft plastic ones as effective, or would the dog push it into it's mouth & chew it???? I've thought about getting one for my young fellow to stop him chewing the inside of the car while travelling...or his seatbelt. I was thinking of using a spray. I use one of these on Smooch to stop him licking his leg off a night, they can drink through this one. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DOG-CANINE-PLASTIC-BASKET-DOG-MUZZLE-SIZE-MINI-AVAIL-BLACK-BEIGE-NEW-/110801341251?pt=AU_Pet_Supplies&hash=item19cc464b43 That's the one I was thinking of, but thought he might be able to push it into his mouth & chew it.

Ohhhhh...arn't they lovely. But I fear my young bloke would eat his too. My girl would be fine, but she likes to snuggle up in her crate. They would be good though to have in the lounge room for them to use instead of the lounge. :)

Dry Shampoos , Potato Flour & Wonder Wash
sheena replied to sheena's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Do you just lather it in then mop it up with a towel & the dirt comes out with it ??? Why do these BC's always think they look better with green greasy necks I just sprayed it on and then gave her a good towel dry. Did that a couple of times. Is this available in stores...do you know? I just went online to order it & it is going to cost almost as much for the postage as it is for the product. -
Not sure where you would get it from...maybe try the health food shops. But why not just get the capsules & break them open.

Magnetic Tick/flea Tag, Anyone Used One?
sheena replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
You could put them on the dog with a bit of wool, that would be weak enough to snap if the dog got hung up. But yes, I agree, I would be worried about the dog swallowing it or chewing it up with a battery inside. Could be nasty Just thought...the wool would only be good for the shoo tag, as the skudo relies on the collar to have it positioned correctly. -
Barking When We Arrive Home
sheena replied to Dame Aussie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am just wondering what your actions are after you have parked the car & gone inside. How do you greet the dog?? Are you inadvertently rewarding him for carrying on like a pork chop, maybe -
Frontline Plus spot on is the best one for ticks if you have cats & can't use Advantix. I wouldn't want to be relying on Frontline spray to protect my dogs from ticks. I buy the biggest one available & split it up with a very small syringe, so I get two doses out of every one.

Magnetic Tick/flea Tag, Anyone Used One?
sheena replied to sallyandtex's topic in General Dog Discussion
As I understand, with the shoo-tag, you can't use any other chemical protection but with the Skudo you can use it as additional protection. If that is the case, I wouldn't mind giving it a try to use together with their current tick prevention..... wonder where you buy them ??? -
That photo was taken after it was removed from the cat by the vet. It was a very pale grey while it was on the cat. The photo unfortunately was taken on my phone, so not the best resolution showing the colour. It is not often you get to see a paralysis tick FULLY engorged and an adult such as this one. Most times you will only see a half fed female or nymph. It was confirmed by the vet as a paralysis tick. It is not a new breed - just a bad photo. I wanted to try to get a photo of it on the cat, but did not get a chance. All ticks cause paralysis. Brush ticks and brown dog ticks also cause paralysis but generally need to have a lot more ticks on the host for paralysis to occur. See photo: Yeah...that chart you put up...the top ones are the paralysis ticks we get here. Gee I have never seen one as big as the one in your photo...not even on the cattle. Poor cat...did he survive ??
