  1. Wish I had my farm closer to town...I would love to have a go at setting up a private dog park. Probably a bit to old to start anything new...maybe in my next life :D
  2. I don't have access to dog parks as I live out of town & I am not too keen on letting my dogs run on a beach where there are other dogs running off lead either...but I have often thought about this idea. Wouldn't it be good, if someone could set up a dog park, well fenced, & maybe some fun things to do in there as well, & then charge people a fee for the sole use of the park for a set time. Two or more people who want to run their dogs together could share the park or whatever. Not sure how one would go about collecting the fee or policing it...but it is something I have often had in the back of my mind, which might work in high populated areas, where people want a bit of space to run or train their dogs without being hassled by others. :)
  3. Hackham fodder stocks BH, if you are south of the city. Do they stock the chicken one though? I've found quite a few stockists of the lamb and the puppy - but I am struggling to find someone who has the chicken one. I would also want the small bag to start with to see if it agrees with her. Why don't you save your legs & ring around...there are heaps of retailers in SA. listed on the Black Hawk Web page. I tried to post you the link, but the link thingimy thing wouldn't work for me this morning. But just go to the website & ring around the retailers listed for Adelaide.
  4. I was thinking about one of those. I wonder if it has a zipper on the cover. Maybe I should ask Clean Run BTW...I just put order number 4 in...a pair of those cute reading glasses, an LED light & 4 lots of the stuff you wash your waterproof gear in. I might have to wait till next pay day to get the mattress.
  5. Probably a little Off Topic, but I just saw an add for Blue Staffies pups available on Mains or Limited register.....both Mum & Dad are blue....Price just $3000
  6. I shouldn't be surprised ....the number of people breeding staffies ATM is astounding. It seems everytime someone says to me "I am getting a puppy"...9 times out of 10 it is a Staffy & never any mention of reputable breeders. I have to bite my tounge & walk away, otherwise I get myself into all sorts of trouble...the same with people getting oodles
  7. OMG...the number of Staffies & Staffy X's on that page is appauling I only looked at a couple of pages
  8. They could get $200 a pup....they have to be joking. On a serious side, though, they could loose their beloved pet in the process
  9. I have just put my third order in...already got my first two. Ordered some gear for myself this time along with a couple of new collars. Now I am tempted to get one of those Quiet Time Deluxe Ombre Swirl Dog Beds. I wonder if the cover is zippered. I will have to stop looking
  10. I received my racoon tug toy today...that was my second order...(I am just putting another list together). Anything, which I might have doubts about with customs, I put in a seperate order, so if it does get held up it doesn't delay the whole order...but so far so good with leather/goat/hide/racoon tug toys. :)
  11. I must be another one who is obviously half asleep & missing something Why do they want to rehome the dog if they have him under control & he is such an "amazing dog"
  12. A friend on Facebook is trying to rehome a 6 month old Bull Arab x Mastiff. Is it legal to have that combination in NSW
  13. What about a regular local market or two
  14. My dogs do great on Black Hawk & for the money, it's hard to beat :)
  15. A Papillon ??? All the ones I have met are very smart, intellegent & easily trained & very pretty :)
  16. You can attach the ring of the Halti to the ring on the collar, so that if the halti comes off you still have control with the collar, or you can use a double lead, which I found very effective. It seemed a bit like a double bridle on a horse. Also front attached harnesses like the Sense-ible (spelling ??) one or the Easy Walk are excellent for dogs which might lunge or pull. Just my experience, mind you, with two border collies...one who is highly reactive.
  17. Poor guy...he was just trying to be friendly. You probably ruined his day & he will never give a smile or a friendly comment to a stranger ever again. Another one bites the dust, all because of some rude person who can't give a smile back. Remind me when I am out walking next time, not to look at anyone or give them a friendly greeting, just incase they are some rude person, having a bad day & they snap at me & ruin my day as well.
  18. No the dog is not using OH's poor memory as an advantage. You are attributing cunning to your dog that doesn't exist. Your OH is risking your dog's life. Surely any adult of normal intelligence is capable of restraining the dog so it doesn't get hit by a car, possibly your OH's car. If he will not go to the trouble of putting the dog inside or putting up a barrier gate/fence then he doesn't value the life of your dog. It is the responsibility of both of you to ensure the dog never has access to an open gate. There is no valid excuse for neglecting this. Even the best behaved dog is at risk of running though an open gate if the opportunity is available. It only has to happen once at the wrong time. As was suggested, if necessary put in an electric fence. Both of you need to be more responsible. How would you feel if the dog was run over simply because neither of you took precautions to prevent it. You list the things the OH won't do to keep the dog safe. What is he prepared to do? I would be laying down the law rather than sitting down to have a quiet chat about what he's willing to do. So far it appears he's not willing to do anything. If this was my dog the terms would be non negotiable. Either a barrier is put up to prevent the dog from getting out...or else. Agree....agree...agree.....my thoughts exactly. To your OH, your pup is "just a dog" & he probably thinks that if she gets herself run over, then it would be her fault Not sure how old your pup is, but until they are about one year old, they have no idea about the dangers of moving wheels. This is not a case of putting her on the grass with something to chew...OMG ... The car & your OH coming home would be far more exciting than something to chew, especially if she sees him coming home, means getting a treat. Fence her off from the front yard.
  19. I would be more worried about the dog being run over. If you gave your OH a bag of treats to give to her each time he came home, it would be even MORE dangerous encouraging her to run beside the car in the anticipation to get a treat. Can't you fence her off from that part of the yard. We have our yard fenced in two. The back part belongs to the dogs & the front yard is for motor cars & my garden & they are only allowed out there under strict supervision. But please don't get him to start treating her when he pulls up in the car That will equal ...dead dog. Keep her well away from moving cars. Maybe id you can't fence off the front from the back yard, then train OH to give you a ring when he is on his way home, so you can put her inside.
  20. Whats a GoDog Dragon wuffles? One of these: http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=2128&ParentCat=449 My parcel arrived today & the dragon is so cute. Glad to hear he is tough as well. I think I might out him away for Christmas. Really happy with the Floppy Frisbees too
  21. This is a cut & paste from my website...sorry I don't have time to type it all out, but this is what I have said about treats, & of course it all depends on how serious you are about training your dog. My dogs do Agility, obedience & dancing so treats are very important to me {quote} Treats come in many different shapes, forms & nutritional value. Soft treats are most valuable for training things such as "loose lead walking" as you can treat the dog while continuing to walk & the dog can consume it quickly & then get on with the job of hanging out for another. If you use hard treats for this, the dog will most probably stop to chew it & by the time he has done this, he may have lost his concentration on you & the whole reason, for why he was rewarded. It is also handy to have some commercially dried treats on hand as well, as these, you can always have in your pocket, so you never miss an opportunity to treat your dog for good behaviour, focusing or a lovely recall. Be careful of dried liver treats as these, even in small amounts, can give your dog (not all dogs) sloppy poos. Depending on what you are training, use low value treats for a good job & use high value treats for a really good job & when training something new. The treats in the picture above is one which I make for training my dogs & they consider it "high value". It is also good for delivering as a "slow treat" as you can take a few pieces & break them up in front of the dog (he will be looking at you & salvinating in anticipation), delivering it to him over about 30 seconds. We call this "silver service" compared to a quick treat which is likened to "take away". A low value treat, would be something of lesser value, like a good kibble or piece of a commercial dog cookie. The base of it is beef sausage mince, but you could change this for a good quality chicken mince (not pet mince, as it contains finely ground bone & too much fat) or finely ground lamb mince. If your dog is allergic to wheat then substitute the flour for oats. Instead of liver, use a couple of cans of sardines. Change whatever you like but just make sure you keep the mince, eggs & flour (or oats) as this is what holds it all together. {quote} The last paragraph refers to a "cake" I make, when I can get hold of preservative free sausage mince....ie...when we do our own cow. I have a dehydrator, but for most training a soft, treat is much preferred to a hard dehydrated treat.
  22. I have NEVER had them slimy & gross & frying them up makes them very easy to handle & not at all gross...very easy to break into tiny pieces. I just make up a batch & keep them in the freezer. True...not entirely homemade...but then again what is???? A whole lot better than those doggy treat stick things you buy :) When I get the clicker out & the garlic fried lamb chunkers out, my two dogs give me their full attention.
  23. I never buy commercial treats. Sometimes my dogs win them & they come in handy for just sticking in my pocket, but I make my own. I have put them together on a web page if you are interested. The ones my dogs go nuts for are the VIP Lamb Chunkers lightly fried in oil & garlic & broken into tiny pieces. Anyway if you are interested, you can find my ideas HERE :)
  24. thanks guys, 1) pedigree'd; no worries here I will be buying from a local reputable breeder. 2) yes, ging to the park would be really great, although I can organise my hours ot go when it is less busy. that surprises me to hear that as the place where I usually go with duke (richmond), has quite a few staffies that i have come to know over the last two years, a few americans/english, and a few resident bull terriers as well ! Just make sure your local reputable breeder is a "registered" breeder, registered with ANKC not just the council or some other body. You will need to get either "Mains" or "Limited" Registration papers with him from the ANKC.
